Anyone else made a big mistake with an expensive mattress?

Had our new mattress for about 6 months and I can’t take it anymore, it’s too firm, I wake up walking like an old woman until my bones have eased up. It’s also too hot. DH likes a firm mattress and when we tried lots in the shop this one seemed fine for me. Our last mattress was a split tension, my half medium, his half firm and that was great for us until it got too old (over 10 years).

We thought we were saving money by not getting the split type again but we’re going to either need to try and cure this one with a mattress topper, or sell it and start again. Not sure what is best, it’s such an expensive mistake, has anyone solved a too firm mattress with a topper?

Yes we have-we bought a Panda mattress topper and it’s transformed the comfort level. Costco has the best price.

This is exactly what we did to solve it too- Panda topper. It’s literally saved our marriage!

I just got a Panda topper for my daughters too hard bed. It’s lovely and they are v reasonably priced.

id try that before getting a new mattress

Bunny2021 · 14/01/2023 09:05

Yes. Got an Emma. So hard and awful. Going to buy a topper which is a pain given that it was so expensive and as it’s a super king toppers are so expensive as well.

Fuckingfuckssake · 14/01/2023 09:09

@Bunny2021 you can return the Emma I think? Don't they have a 100 night guarantee?

Ridiculousradish · 14/01/2023 09:12

Bought an Emma but absolutely hate it. Find it far too soft and wake up aching every morning. Going to return it. Think I need an old fashioned sprung mattress.

Oblomov22 · 14/01/2023 09:20

Hmm. We need a new mattress. Can't find one we both like. I bought Ds1 a Costco panda mattress topper for Uni.

TattiePants · 14/01/2023 11:45

We paid about £700 for a new mattress 2 years ago and I thought I loved it in the shop (I like firm mattresses). After one night sleeping on it I absolutely hated it and it was way too hard. Bought an M&S topper and I love it now. I’ve never bothered with a topper before but this has transformed our bed.

DearSisterMichael · 14/01/2023 20:30

Phew I’m so glad so many mattress problems have been solved with a topper! Not heard of Panda ones but I have a Costco membership so I can check them out. They’re not hot/sweaty are they?

Oh god. We bought a mattress that has a topper built on. It's HORRIBLE. It's so hot and I get back ache the moment I lie down.
Can't get another bloody topper on top of the built in stupid topper. Stupid stupid mattress.

Hongkongsuey · 14/01/2023 21:34

The topper isn’t sweaty. I was a bit worried as I once returned a Simba mattress because I got hot and clammy. The Panda is fine for that. We’re very pleased with it.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 14/01/2023 21:37

Yes, got a fancy memory foam gel thing. Haven’t had it long. Maybe 3 months. Two distinct body shapes and a big lump of no man’s land down the middle. Also it’s too deep for our sheets and they ping off in the night. It’s now a climb to get into the bed. Saved up for ages to buy this.

We've just bought an Emma. It felt fantastic in the shop but the mattress we have feels really flabby and spongy. No better than our very very good mattress which finally conked out after 16 years. I'd love a new one just like it but they no longer exist. If the Emma doesn't get better we will return it.

I like the sound of these Panda toppers.

tootiredtobother · 16/01/2023 18:10

i have a Casper, bought 5 years ago now, after a sprung job.
absolutely love the Casper, not hot, no extra topper needed.
I had thought Casper was renamed into Emma etc, why do they all have human names ??

Very strange my Vispring has a 25 yr guarantee, and we were able to change firmness if we didn’t get on with it after three months of use, and they dont even start to soften until after a few years. Had mine for 12 yrs now and its never missed a beat. Mind you it did cost over 10k so it should be good.

We've got a great mattress (Furmanac) but it's on the firm side. So I got a mattress topper from John Lewis ... it's an absolute godsend. Splits in half so you can wash it, and has completely changed the feel of the bed.

We got a super expensive mattress and it’s too hard for me. Fixed by a cheap topper from John Lewis. Great now!

Growlybear83 · 16/01/2023 18:24

I bought a Tempur mattress about 18 months ago, and hate it with a passion. It felt really soft like I was sinking into a cloud in the shop, but when mine arrived it was SO hard. I had already bought what was meant to be a really soft mattress from Dreams which was like sleeping on concrete, and they exchanged it for the Tempur (with a hefty extra payment) so I couldn't exchange it again. It's finally starting to get a little bit softer after all this time. I didn't think you could use a topper with this type of mattress, but after reading some of the other comments, I think I may buy one.

Thechoccieorange · 16/01/2023 18:28

We had a simba hybrid "luxe", it was awful , you woke up sweaty, and had dips in it, the zip on its topper broke so the topper was redundant which meant our bedsheets just slipped off as the surface under the topper was weirdly slippy. They exchanged it for a new one which is just as hot and dippy. I would never buy one again. Can't afford another bed mattress right now so we are stuck with it.

Always4Brenner · 16/01/2023 18:32

Love my panda topper when I get a new bed I’ll buy a double as I love it so much.

bluebird3 · 16/01/2023 18:32

We had this problem. My husband loved the firmness though so I bought a single mattress topper for just my half of the king. It does feel a bit princess and the pea as I also have a heated blanket on my side only but at least we are both comfy🤣
