Naff things in other people's houses (Tongue in Cheek)

I know that it is a question of each to his own etc but what do you find naff in other people's homes? I was invited round to neighbour's today to gawp at their new gas barbecue that is the size of a Challenger tank. They were terribly proud of it and the husband was lovingly caressing it whilst the wife was squealing in anticipation of all the hot sausage her man was going to serve her! All I could think was 'Why? Why? Why?' What do you find naff in other people's homes and why?

I love a lighthearted thread but this just screams "judgement" and "nastiness"

I’ve seen a few things on here that I’m guilty of - but I don’t give a fuck, I like them! Grin

@Shodan

Interiors that are achingly 'cool' - eg all white/grey interiors with uncomfortable chairs etc.

Feature walls, especially those that have violently patterned wallpaper.

But...
I'm in no position to judge. I'm fondly decorating a tree stump in my front garden with 'tasteful' ornaments- a colourful gnome, a stone toadstool that's twice the size of the gnome, a metal ladybird, a cutesie stone dragon and a raft of solar fairy lights. I call it my Ode To Naffness and I will defend it to the death. Grin

Is your gnome going to be called Gnigel or Gnorbert or somesuch?

@FortunesFave

Everyone has a gas bbq here in Oz. You spend so much time outside that it makes sense...why wouldn't you have something that made cooking outdoors easier? We eat and cook outside for about 6-8 months of the year after all.

But I can see why they're not quite sensible in the UK....

Personally I love 70s decor and this house was fully 70s when we moved in and still is....we have a full sized bar downstairs complete with orange and brass light fittings...we do backwards living here with bedrooms and sitting room plus kitchen and bathroom upstairs and down is the bar, laundry room and a spare room which we use as a gym/craft room.

I'd like to switch it all the right way round though...so I think our house is a bit naff for that reason! DH agrees but the cash isn't available at the moment!

No problem with a barbie but this monstrous beast is half the size of their house! Jeff, who is normally a mild-mannered somewhat beige character has been transformed into a socks and sandals wearing Leviathan bestriding his BBQ with the demented look of a worm that is about to turn! I am afraid. Very afraid.

Bought furniture. 😏

BrieAndChilli · 25/06/2021 23:18

Those bloody wall quote stickers - they are a pain. We just bought a house with one which we removed and despite several layers of paint you can still see where it was!! We have covered it with art work bit of not the only options would have been to replanted the bloody wall!!

LovelyGirlCompetition · 25/06/2021 23:20

Ha. Alternating between laughing at the posts then feeling slightly offended at finding something I have Grin. But this is the best...
My dad has some twigs that have plastic pearls glued on them. From the nineties, and I believe last dusted in the nineties.

pinkpapaya · 25/06/2021 23:20

I admit that I too hate it when people brick over or slab their entire gardens - causes flooding, crap for wildlife and just ugly.

I really dislike indoor plants .
Maybe one at a push (if you mut) but those RM pictures with every surface containing A Plant
Or those insta-lifestyle photo shoots .

My DD has 3 cacti , one is tiny . They live in her room so I don;t have to see them.

Plants in gardens - love them

I don’t mind this thread and the naff claims are funny but the inverse snobbery is cringe! Cop on to yourselves.

Yeah, I also think this is judgey. The OP is rather enjoying herself too much.
We get it. You think you've got better taste than everyone else. Well done and all that.

Cowbells · 25/06/2021 23:24

@pinkpapaya

Another one for me are those white studio portraits of people en famille rolling around on the floor usually barefoot pretending like they are having such a great time and being ever so spontaneous. I don't wish to see your bunions in full glorious technicolour and certainly not blown up extra large!
Ime the families that have those white group portraits done always end up divorced. I used to see them on people's walls and think, Oh shit. Their marriage is in trouble.

Personally can't stand deep pile grey carpets with visible hoover marks.

saraclara · 25/06/2021 23:24

Thanks for the hug @pinkpapaya!

You should see my Covid 'feel good' coffee table. It has all the cards (including Mothers' Day cards) on display that my DDs sent me through the strict lockdowns, to cheer me up! At some point I should probably put them away somewhere, now that we're all visiting each other as normal!

Hmmm, yes, thinking about it I'm starting to scare myself with all this
sentimentality. At this rate I'll end up with picture frames with sentimental claptrap printed on them Grin

Actually, I have a few of the things mentioned here so I am not above anyone else or out of the firing line!

I admit that they do come across as trying a little bit 'trying too hard' for my taste.

Actually, I think that is rather lovely given that you haven't been able to see them and I do hope that the next hugs you get are from your kids and grandkids Flowers

I have managed to kill every single orchid that I have ever been bought or given so I have a fake one now. It is realistic and was expensive but it is my dirty little secret Wink

Agree with this. If you really ticked the upper middle class boxes you'd know that the commonest thing you can do is sneer at other people for being common. Have some fucking class and keep it to yourselves.

Eternal Beau Dinner set.

FlatteredFool · 25/06/2021 23:42

I thought all these things were what made a house a home. I suspect that I have naff thoughts as well as a naff home.

I find other peoples homes fascinating. I love lots of photos on the wall that mean something to the owner rather than abstract arty farty things that have no personality or soul.

I have lots of things mentioned here. Naff tat is good!
