Naff things in other people's houses (Tongue in Cheek)

I know that it is a question of each to his own etc but what do you find naff in other people's homes? I was invited round to neighbour's today to gawp at their new gas barbecue that is the size of a Challenger tank. They were terribly proud of it and the husband was lovingly caressing it whilst the wife was squealing in anticipation of all the hot sausage her man was going to serve her! All I could think was 'Why? Why? Why?' What do you find naff in other people's homes and why?

@habibihabibi

I would quite like to stencil die, cry, hate on my kitchen wall.
Or ‘Dance like everyone’s watching you, BECAUSE THEY ARE’?
Ninkanink · 28/06/2021 19:45

Shower Shit Shave

Cam22 · 28/06/2021 20:10

Grey grey grey.

walkoflifewoohoo · 28/06/2021 20:19

Ooh

I've got a layzspa, a tiki bar, a neon flamingo lamp, pineapple lamp, toucan cushion.

I've got a cushion with whales on it that says, "whale, whale, whale. What do we have here?" 😂

I've got a magnet collection.

I've also got dusty books so am I cool or not?

@MsTSwift

God I love our hot tub. It’s a proper one with lovely views go in it most days with my coffee. Bliss. It’s like having a massage on your neck. Really couldn’t care if randoms think it’s naff!
It’s chock full of your germs and so on.
Cam22 · 28/06/2021 20:29

@Eyestotheright

Tacky gel nails
How are they used in interiors?!😆
Poorlykitten · 28/06/2021 21:14

Someone I know is one of those house stagers, a self appointed one as I don’t think she has any credentials. She goes in to sellers houses and takes away all their crap and replaces it with more crap, or what she considers to be tasteful crap, which is namely those motivational signs, woven hearts and those aromatherapy misting things ( make me get an instant headache). She’s have a heart attack if she came on here snd saw how naff everyone thinks they are. She also hates books and always suggests painting things grey.

Hadjab · 28/06/2021 21:47

Also "My kitchen is for dancing". Bollocks, it is

Well mine is - I have a mirror ball and everything!

Cam22 · 29/06/2021 10:09

I LOVE those canvas pictures of a wine bottle or something, that are studded with glowing lights, and are powered by an actual battery pack. Something both tacky and absolutely hilarious about them.

This has reminded me that a friend lived in a student houseshare in Oxford which had an actual shrine to Leonardo di Caprio, lit with winking, coloured fairylights, on the kitchen wall.
BrieAndChilli · 29/06/2021 13:44

i think from this thread that 'naff' is just anything that's popular!!
there's lots of things on this thread that must be very popular as they are for sale everywhere and companies wouldn't bother making them if they didn't make money!
now i think a lot of the stuff is not to my taste but then peopple would probably hate some of my choices!

I think you're cool. It is very cool to like what you like and be happy with it, even proud of it. Nothing less cool than people worrying about what's cool and what's naff. Not to mention that today's cool will be tomorrow's naff.

Oh there's shitloads of those... Their favorite dwelling place is usually instagram alongside the Dubai porta potties and bright white scalp orange face brigade.
😂😂

Hi I am a trader in Home Decor who sells goods and so many things mentioned have been sold by me.

Twigs in vases - 10 yrs ago?
Arificial flowers
Christmas pictures with lights in them -5 years ago
plaques with quotes - 2/3 years ago
Pugs & unicorns -2/3 years ago
plug in's & oil burners, - now
Candles in jars are out.

To probably be naff in the future 2/3 years:
salt lamps

Indoor water features
Tree motifs on anything
Buddah statues
Diffusers
Big metal skeleton clocks
Dreamcatchers
Nordic style

Gosh, I think the ship has sailed already on your second list. Salt lamps are essentially lava lamps# 2, and have indoor water features and Buddha statues ever been anything other than misguided attempts to make your house feel vaguely like a spa?
LST · 01/07/2021 14:57

I love salt lamps. I don't have one incase my cats lick them and die

Jahebejrjr · 01/07/2021 18:13

My DS has one in his student halls. It looks cosy and warm.

Cattenberg · 01/07/2021 20:12

Big metal skeleton clocks
Nordic style

I love these two!

Too many books can make a property look cluttered, but there’s nothing wrong with a few bookshelves. You’re selling a lifestyle and I think books are part of that.

Grey can be OK, (at least it’s a blank canvas). It can make rooms look cold or dingy, though.

Aromatherapy misting things are fine, if they’re subtle. However, I think the best smell is the nice clean scent of shampooed carpets.

Indoor water features?! Haven’t these always been seen as overly flamboyant, impractical and the height of tacky? Agree on huge skeleton clocks, hate them

@RicherThanYew

Framed photograph of their ONE kid everywhere. A wooden rack full of shoes in the living room, just put
them away ffs. 7 skulls in various themes hmm Don't even get me started on the toys, they're fucking everywhere. I don't even mean kids toys, the cats and dogs have them too and they're just ... all over the furniture and floors. The grown woman of the house has dozens of soft toys and 3 live in the living room wearing outfits confused

Oh wait, that's my house. On account of me not giving a shiny shite what's in other peoples homes.

I love love love you RicherThanYew!
Can I be your friend? I have vertical blinds, a garden full of plants, clutter, an oak kitchen, use stuffed animals (soft toys) as holiday decorations, lots of pictures of family, popcorn ceilings (Artex?)… The list goes on.

I enjoy seeing what people have in their homes-I’m quite nosy-and I don’t look down on them for it cause who am I to talk?

BosseFave · 07/07/2021 20:56

"Bifold doors and the big open family space beyond are apparently on the way out"

I think that's the designers trying to come up with a new thing to sell to us. Don't fall for it. Bifolds are marvellous and I absolutely love open plan.

LifeinPieces21 · 08/07/2021 00:29

Does open plan feel cosy though? As in a normal house. We have a large garden but I love getting cosy in a lounge seperate from the rest of the house to chill and watch TV.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 08/07/2021 02:46

potpourri, twigs & pebbley shit

driftwood motivation crap

crockery with "eat/salad/milk/pasta" etc written on them

pretentious and/or bragging catalogue living
