Naff things in other people's houses (Tongue in Cheek)

I know that it is a question of each to his own etc but what do you find naff in other people's homes? I was invited round to neighbour's today to gawp at their new gas barbecue that is the size of a Challenger tank. They were terribly proud of it and the husband was lovingly caressing it whilst the wife was squealing in anticipation of all the hot sausage her man was going to serve her! All I could think was 'Why? Why? Why?' What do you find naff in other people's homes and why?

I feel really depressed at the thought of having visitors. I like lots of things, I can appreciate that things are nice even if they aren't my particular style. I think that having visitors who are judging everything I have is truly depressing.

Now I want a turquoise bathroom.

Blossomtoes · 28/06/2021 15:34

I’d love a turquoise bathroom. I keep hoping coloured suites will come back into fashion.

Why would people not like bifold doors?! The back wall of my extension is basically a bifold door. It's the best part of my house!

madgirlsinging · 28/06/2021 15:43

One thing that I really loathe are those ever-so-twee cross stitch pictures people hang proudly on their walls. Usually they are cutesy teddy bears, kittens, or the cringiest ever, inspirational quotes. But some may be Bob Ross-esque style mountainous landscapes.....vom, vom, vom.

@wsbts

Bidets we had 2 in a house some years ago. Never used.

Does anyone actually use them??

They became A bath for Barbie's in my house... Grin

Black bifold doors are ugly and a middle class cliche. And they don't do much for period properties.

It's possible to do bifold doors disguised with a more period look.

Mine are a bluey grey so have I passed the ugly test?

I agree. There is also a fashion to make sash-windows on period houses black as though the houses have the black metal windows of new houses, and even black upvc now.

It must be lovely to live with.

It can be the colour and look of a drug dealers swish pad.

But it it is a nice luxury to have all that light and just feel the outside coming in .

LifeinPieces21 · 28/06/2021 16:31

I would have to have blinds on my bi-fold doors as I wouldn't like that much light all the time but it must be lovely on a warm day.

No-one has blinds on the ones I've seen though.

I have vertical blinds on mine but hardly have them shut. I've obviously made them naff by having vertical blinds on them

I hate bi fold doors too Blush

1000glitterydicks · 28/06/2021 16:47

Any decor that tells me what to do...
Sleep
Relax
Bath
Etc etc
As well as the motivational quotes.
I saw one in a house on Rightmove - it was a quote by Coco Chanel about being classy. Made very very unclassy by being a vinyl sticker on the wall!!!

Genuinely interested as to why?
Cam22 · 28/06/2021 17:08

Bifold doors and the big open family space beyond are apparently on the way out. People want their own space, these days. They want to have proper rooms with doors which they can shut. Open plan living is only perfect in theory.

I just think they've become so ubiquitous and samey. I don't mind them quite as much on new houses but I think they really jar on period properties. I don't like all the openness that seems to be the thing nowadays, and let's face it, it's not as though the weather's reliable for long enough for them to actually be used. I like separate rooms and would be looking at replacing walls in an open plan house. I think they'll look very 2019 in a few years and date really quickly as all fads do. Just my opinion but if I was looking to buy a house with them i'd be factoring in getting rid.

ScrollingLeaves · 28/06/2021 17:28

I do think it is a shame that so many period houses with finely thought out proportions had all the walls downstairs pulled down to make them open plan.

I once heard a designer say he ‘loved’ taking a Victorian house on a ‘journey’.

I can see the reasoning though when an added extension has its own space and opening.

NationMcKinley · 28/06/2021 18:27

I agree about the bifold doors too. We had them in our old house with a south facing garden. It made the whole of the back of our house like a giant conservatory - either boiling hot or chilly. I like plenty of light in a house but I don’t like giant walls of windows like the ones they always seem to have in Grand Designs. Not in an English climate anyway!

I think lockdown will have a huge influence on open plan living and it’s demise. It’s lovely to have family spaces but equally it’s also nice to get away from them! Grin

habibihabibi · 28/06/2021 18:52

I would quite like to stencil
die, cry, hate on my kitchen wall.

Wellpark · 28/06/2021 19:38

I see from the comments that many aspects of my carefully thought out decor is as naff as it gets. However, I don't care!! It was put together over the years with love and it's a happy family home. So many people would love to have a warm and inviting home so I think it is naff to pour scorn on folk who put effort in to making their home nice for themselves.

HeronLanyon · 28/06/2021 19:39

blue you might be onto something Grin
Have had some days over the last few years where ‘grim endless shit’ wouldn’t have been out of place
