Naff things in other people's houses (Tongue in Cheek)

I know that it is a question of each to his own etc but what do you find naff in other people's homes? I was invited round to neighbour's today to gawp at their new gas barbecue that is the size of a Challenger tank. They were terribly proud of it and the husband was lovingly caressing it whilst the wife was squealing in anticipation of all the hot sausage her man was going to serve her! All I could think was 'Why? Why? Why?' What do you find naff in other people's homes and why?

@EversoDelighted

Well, we've got a set of those vertical blinds left over from the 1980s so I'll start by nominating my own house for that.
I don't mind vertical blinds. But when I am Queen I will ban net curtains.

I don't like huge TVs but Which? tells me that the smaller ones are naff these days so you have to buy bigger to get better quality. Ours is 32 inch and about as big as our lounge size can cope with so hopefully it will last a while longer.

helpmewiththisnew · 26/06/2021 15:17

Vertical blinds are ok in white wood aren't they, asking for a friend the shined metal ones are out for sure?

My fiends the words on this sign on the window sill above the downstairs loo, held by a wooden carved man with his pants down ( I noticed) Blush I was a bit shocked that young people have such tack

Manky net curtains - yuck

Any home that had a cat living there - the fleas and debris it leaves behind

I'm really shocked there is a problem with vertical blinds! Shock

Ninkanink · 26/06/2021 15:27

Are you sure you’re not thinking of horizontal blinds?

Vertical blinds never look good.

Thewinterofdiscontent · 26/06/2021 15:33

@MissLucyEyelesbarrow

And the ones with sinks in are the worst, who wants a sink in the middle of a room

I don't have particularly strong feelings on islands generally but agree 💯 on this. Why the fuck would you want the messiest bit of a kitchen to be right in the middle?

Depends on the room. My friends have a large kitchen island with a sink in the middle. The dishwasher is under the sink so there’s no mess.

Opposite the island it’s just a (wide) walkthrough from hall to back garden. So really the island feels like a normal kitchen side but with no wall. The huge dining table is under the large double window. It all feels very light bright and functional.

My kitchen is a dark grotto though so maybe I’m just in awe at anyone that can host 8 in the kitchen without a care.

Well I like them!

If you like them then it’s all good! It’s just one of those things that many people find a bit clinical or waiting room-esque.

I’m sure there’s something I like that you’d think is awful. Smile

I entertain in my garden but I have wine coolers etc and a kitchen close by.Grin

Ninkanink · 26/06/2021 15:47

We have a tiny little paved back yard (I call it the courtyard Wink ) and the other day my DH seriously suggested we use fake grass out there.

Not. Happening.

I’ve filled it with lots of potted plants and shrubs and I’m sure someone’s going to say (or already has said) that that’s utterly naff. I don’t care - I love sitting out at our little table and chairs and enjoying the greenery and flowers.

I'm not offended or anything I just never realised they could be seen as being naff, it never occurs to me to judge or have opinions on other peoples homes or belongings etc I'm just not that type of person Grin think I'll stop reading this thread now Grin

Really? The only place those belong is in an office.
ginghamtablecloths · 26/06/2021 15:55

I'm not sure what you call them but you know those china ornaments of ladies with swirling skirts and hats? A friend has a lot of these - I'd never hurt her feelings by dissing them to her face but I expect they're so old-fashioned now that you'd have trouble giving them away.

Also, I hate those old tiled 1950s mantelpieces which are so dowdy, and the Misermatic gas fires which give off a lot of heat but are really ugly.

bytheby · 26/06/2021 15:55

astro turf. Just the worst. Do you not care about the planet at all??

(barring those who need it for medical reasons)

NewLifeInTheSouth · 26/06/2021 15:57

Crushed velvet
Mirrored furniture
Fake panelling and character property features in new builds
red/raspberry carpet
pale leather sofas

Yes to all of that.

And my current bete noire are staircases with those bloody glass panels being used in place of wooden spindles. They are in every 'bespoke' new build at the moment and it's driving me nuts. They are hideous. It makes the house look like a cruise ship, or your local health centre. You will spend your life polishing smeary fingerprints off them and they will date SO badly, by 2030 you'll be wanting to rip them out.

Ninkanink · 26/06/2021 15:58

@prodilp1tbh I don’t think they are naff. It’s a bit of a funny word that one since it’s just slang and most of the time it’s not really used correctly on threads like this anyway. It’s just not something I’d consider having myself (I lived in a rented house with them for many years and the decor in that place was awful so it’s probably tied up with that). However it wouldn’t ever occur to me to judge anyone on perfectly normal and ordinary things like that either. It’s a judgement of the item itself, not on an individual who might choose to have it. Same goes for fashion - I think I dress very well but I’m sure plenty of people might say I don’t! I don’t care - if they’ve got no taste that’s their issue! Wink

It’s all so variable. Plus the class thing runs right through it as well which I always find a bit ridiculous being from Denmark where it’s not really a thing.

helpmewiththisnew · 26/06/2021 16:04

I mixed them up myself vertical
Blinds are well vertical l

The Venetian blinds are horizontal ----

UnlimitedChipsAndSalsa · 26/06/2021 16:14

@StuffinThePuffin People who have doors AND windows. Looks tacky as fuck. Just pick one ffs.

Brilliant! Grin

Ninkanink · 26/06/2021 16:15

Horizontal vs. Vertical is one of the only set of words where I really, really have to think about which is which. Ironic really given that the clue is right there in one of the words!
