Naff things in other people's houses (Tongue in Cheek)

I know that it is a question of each to his own etc but what do you find naff in other people's homes? I was invited round to neighbour's today to gawp at their new gas barbecue that is the size of a Challenger tank. They were terribly proud of it and the husband was lovingly caressing it whilst the wife was squealing in anticipation of all the hot sausage her man was going to serve her! All I could think was 'Why? Why? Why?' What do you find naff in other people's homes and why?

Cant see whats wrong with a large barbecue if you like barbecued food. I'm not keen on sparkly lights everywhere unless it's Christmas. Didnt used to be a thing. And candkesticks without candles look a bit daft and pointless. But each to their own. No matter how naff if you like it then have it.

LifeinPieces21 · 26/06/2021 13:55

@kindaclassy

What I find naff is people in socks or slippers at home during the day.

And family photos the only decor on the wall. The "cake smash" pro photos are so bad they are nearly good!

I don't understand the socks in the day thing.
mintybobs · 26/06/2021 14:01

Net curtains- naff, dated and they always look grubby
Any kind of cheesy wall mural/motto eg "Live laugh love" - its always the most uptight, non loving people who have these too!
Boudoir photos - always deeply unflattering and looks like the camera lens has been smeared with vaseline in a vague attempt to make the person look better/less flawed
Artificial grass/flowers
Avocado bathroom
Overly colourful, clashing rooms with poseur art work where the ceiling is yellow, walls purple and carpet orange in a kind of zany "arent we soooo arty, boho and eccentric?!" way
Any version of a gnome (extra points if its fishing)
Any kind of naff porcelain figure Eg pigs dressed in 1900's dresses or frogs in waistcoats and top hats etc
"hilarious" kitchen plaques such as "you dont have to be mad to cook here but it helps!" vom
Those dolls with the huge skirt that covers a spare toilet roll

midsomermurderess · 26/06/2021 14:05

What's poseur artwork?

@Minezatea

If you have plantar faciitis you need to wear shoes, preferably ones "dispensed" at a specialist shoe shop. Slippers and socks will not help at all.

Completely an aside from this thread but they do help a little. I didn't know there were specialist shoe shops who can dispense specialist shoes. Sounds very worth investigating as I have been in pain for 8 months+. Can you advise any specific places to investigate? I am still on WL for podiatrist so would be good to get ahead of his advise.

I didn't find the podiatrist helpful at all. I saw a physiotherapist for a few weeks but once I had learned the stretches and the massage technique I didn't need to go back. Mostly I had to stay off my feet as much as possible which was for about 3-4 weeks, do the prescribed stretches and massage (roll you heel around ona golf ball for a few mins each evening) and heat treatment (I used a eheatbag) each evening. Depending on the level of pain of course. But then I went to a sports shoe shop where they had a specialist for foot problems and got these AMAZING trainers with marshmallowy heels. He said to wear them all the time. And tbh the improvement was immediate, those trainers have been fantastic. After another month I was back to hiking etc. I still get a little pain but just use the stretches etc to recover.

Good exercise tips on YouTube.

Good luck, you can beat it.

Jahebejrjr · 26/06/2021 14:14

Which trainers please. I suffer from plantar fasciitis

Timetochange11 · 26/06/2021 14:14

I'm going to start a new thread with actual picture, I don't know the actual size, I never said anywhere that I wanted to report her just that I'm sorry I lost my view! 70% of you agreed they would be too!

TheTuesdayPringle · 26/06/2021 14:16

@Whall10

Wondering what people have on their walls instead of family portraits etc?
Art? I have a mixture of stuff by family (few artists in the family) and prints I've picked up along the way.
Timetochange11 · 26/06/2021 14:16

Haha wrong thread!

Hoka. They're fantastic. Good luck!

(love how this has turned into the plantar faciitis thread 😂)

guessing it has a lot to do with the various lockdown and restrictions.

I'm not sure. You can still have a drink at home without having to build a bar in your garden. Not quite the same as going to the pub if you're sitting in your new bar on your own because you're not allowed to have any mates round as it was in lockdown.

kindaclassy · 26/06/2021 14:32

I don't know, I think there's a fashion of "outdoor" facilities at the moment.

I don't mind the bars so much. The "outdoor cinema" in your own garden is the one that's horribly naff. Most people don't have the size for one!

kindaclassy · 26/06/2021 14:33

"Balloons" everything are quite naff too!

Balloons arch, balloons decor, exploding balloons with more balloons in them..

ivykaty44 · 26/06/2021 14:38

I have a 1980s avocado bath room suite with floor to ceiling tiles, Its grown on me. im thinking of getting the ceiling redone and the tiles regrouted...shoot me now.

the doctors blinds had to go, I drew the line somewhere

ScrollingLeaves · 26/06/2021 14:40

I think anyone who has an old, coloured bathroom suite should definitely keep it.

ZednotZee · 26/06/2021 14:41

Layzspa owner reporting for duty.

Yes, we shag in to too.

Lotsolove · 26/06/2021 14:42

My FIL has a naff wife in his house.

ivykaty44 · 26/06/2021 14:43

paintings

all our family photos are in frames put onto of furniture, tbh I think they'd look a bit lost on the wall

Benjispruce3 · 26/06/2021 14:46

I have paintings on walls and family photos up my stairs. Waiting to be told that’s naff. Don’t care though because I like it . Be boring if we all liked the same thing.

Benjispruce3 · 26/06/2021 14:48

I don’t really get the garden bar. I mean, ive always sat in my garden with a bottle of wine/beer.

Somarefuser · 26/06/2021 14:52

@HeronLanyon

In the interest of balance because everyone who likes the above things (and they are popular) stays quiet - Loads of dusty old books Old wooden furniture Abstract art Clutter Gardens full of plants and messy Lots of colour Pretentious wicker/marble/cast iron things and overpriced foody things. Etc
That’s us! And I do have some naff nick-nacks, but most of them were given to me by children I taught; fridge magnets, mugs, scented candles, novelty key rings... And plants in my messy garden. Please think of the consequences of Teacher Gifts! Shamed on MN.
LifeinPieces21 · 26/06/2021 14:53

I like the outside bar idea. I love using my garden. I love being outside. We have a big garden and use it as much as possible.

If you entertain it's nice.
Alviona · 26/06/2021 15:06

My pet hate is things made out of vintage items - cheese grater made into a holder for dried flowers with a tea towel hanging off it, old metal colanders made into kitchen lampshades, barrel made into a coffee table, Victorian furniture given a hideous 'makeover' with bright coloured paint and Disney stickers...
