Naff things in other people's houses (Tongue in Cheek)

I know that it is a question of each to his own etc but what do you find naff in other people's homes? I was invited round to neighbour's today to gawp at their new gas barbecue that is the size of a Challenger tank. They were terribly proud of it and the husband was lovingly caressing it whilst the wife was squealing in anticipation of all the hot sausage her man was going to serve her! All I could think was 'Why? Why? Why?' What do you find naff in other people's homes and why?

That last line should read, I AM quite content in my naff-central house 😀.

@2389Champ I’ve got the very irritating and uncomfortable combination of scandi minimalist and collector’s compulsion. It’s a constant tension and struggle to get the two sides to fit well together. If I lived at home in Copenhagen it’d be proper scandi all the way but I don’t feel it works so well here in the U.K. - we live in a Victorian house and it needs a bit of clutter to add life IMO.

AnxiousPixie · 26/06/2021 10:30

Anything diamante!

Ninkanink · 26/06/2021 10:31

@ThePluckOfTheCoward I’m desperate to have a hostess trolley! I’m definitely going to buy one in time for Christmas this year.

DinosaurDiana · 26/06/2021 10:32

Outside couches.
Fire pits.
Jacuzzis.
Decking.

languagelover96 · 26/06/2021 10:32

Also charity shops are full of naff items from houses.

ImaHogg · 26/06/2021 10:33

Last year I bought a car off a man. He had a Vespa scooter hanging off his living room wall!

MolyHolyGuacamole · 26/06/2021 10:34

I know it's all the rage on the 'fancy' home instas, but wood panelling, usually painted in bold colours. Makes my eyes water, and the panelling is gaudy

tigger1001 · 26/06/2021 10:35

These kinds of threads make me laugh, but not in the way the op intends.

They are just snobbery at its finest and it isn't a good look!

The post about a house going straight onto the "no" list for buying as it had a sign outside just screams that the potential buyer lacks any kind of imagination if they cannot see past decor that wouldn't be there when the new owners moved in.

People have different tastes. That's ok. In fact that's good - it certainly would be boring if we all liked the same stuff. Stop being so judgy about other people's homes - you don't need to live there. And just decorate your own space to your own taste.

MolyHolyGuacamole · 26/06/2021 10:35

@TedMullins

Also when people karate chop their cushions so the corners stick up and there’s a dent in the middle…. Why?
Yes this one really gets me. All I can see if 'not square' and I want to go and fix it
MaMelon · 26/06/2021 10:35

YY to wood panelling - the 2021 equivalent of wallpaper borders, stencils and dado rails.

MolyHolyGuacamole · 26/06/2021 10:37

Knot cushions, which seem to feature in many girls bedrooms after a 'grown up' makeover

@Zzelda

Saunas Loads of shingle instead of grass Partly plastered brick walls that just look as if they ran out of plaster Half timbered interior walls
Can I always add faux beams to the half timbered interior walls.
khaleesi71 · 26/06/2021 10:45

@ThinkAboutItTomorrow - I entirely agree and also no skin in the game but can't help but wonder what on earth some people have in their houses! They must all be filled with glorious decor the likes of which is beyond reproach. 'Lighthearted' = judgement so leaving a Biscuit - why does it matter to anyone what is in someone else's house? No wonder people in MN never answer the door - they clearly live in fear of judgement. I'm off to polish my clearly naff stunt pineapple.

Jemimapuddleduk · 26/06/2021 10:46

I am no doubt totally naff to the extreme and according to previous posters my marriage is in trouble as I like family portrait pictures. 🤣
However our first family portrait was gifted to us by a childhood cancer charity when my little boy (then aged 1) was having aggressive chemo for Acute myeloid leukaemia. He was desperately ill but still smiled for the camera. I love looking at this and seeing how far he has come. We have had others since. You never know how long we have on this planet.
Some of these responses are so judgy and mean.

JudgeJ · 26/06/2021 10:48

@Benjispruce3

I think people need to understand what naff means.
Braodly speaking it means anything of which you disapprove!
Jahebejrjr · 26/06/2021 10:49

@MolyHolyGuacamole Since when were girls bedrooms supposed to be tasteful? Surely they are an expression of their personality?

Poorlykitten · 26/06/2021 10:49

I think if you are sensitive about a jokey thread, then best come off mumsnet. Everyone has different taste, no one can claim ( although I’m sure they would like to) that their idea of taste is better than anyone else’s. Don’t overthink it. P.s. we have loads of old books, most of which have been read several times. I’m not offended that people think this is naff. I do judge them for it though. 😂😉

Smokeymirror · 26/06/2021 10:50

Millions of cushions on beds?? I just don’t get it at all..

Poorlykitten · 26/06/2021 10:50

@khaleesi71 dying to know what a stunt pineapple is?!

khaleesi71 · 26/06/2021 10:51

@Poorlykitten - I'm not sensitive. This thread is just rude and is being called out for it.

Poorlykitten · 26/06/2021 10:52

@khaleesi71 wasn’t directed at you, last comment was though!

khaleesi71 · 26/06/2021 10:52

@Poorlykitten - is reference to a previous thread where everyone had a pineapple in a fruit bowl to look 'sophisticated'. It's never eaten.

khaleesi71 · 26/06/2021 10:53
@khaleesi71 wasn’t directed at you, last comment was though!
I realise I looked sensitive in that post Wink

JudgeJ · 26/06/2021 10:53

@pinkpapaya

Loads of fridge magnets! I never understood those. One or two to clamp appointment letters or kid's drawings perhaps but not 30+ of them! What a bugger to clean having to remove them all then stick them back on!
Are you meant to clean them??? It's the grease that's holding some of mine to the fridge!
