Naff things in other people's houses (Tongue in Cheek)

I know that it is a question of each to his own etc but what do you find naff in other people's homes? I was invited round to neighbour's today to gawp at their new gas barbecue that is the size of a Challenger tank. They were terribly proud of it and the husband was lovingly caressing it whilst the wife was squealing in anticipation of all the hot sausage her man was going to serve her! All I could think was 'Why? Why? Why?' What do you find naff in other people's homes and why?

I spotted a flamingo lamp through a neighbours window the other day, basically a flamingo statue with a large pink lampshade round it's neck. Will confess to having googled it with a view to buy though!

The way 'light hearted' or 'tongue in cheek' tends to just mean 'let's just be bitchy and judgemental' on these kind of threads is a bit pathetic imo.
@MolyHolyGuacamole Since when were girls bedrooms supposed to be tasteful? Surely they are an expression of their personality?
I view a lot of 'home decor' instagrams, they don't look very expressive of the girls...think Mrs Hinch but 'tween' version, all muted colours, very insta-worthy, but with the pillow thrown in.

I had a tacky bedroom covered in stickers and posters! These are definitely along the current trend of Instamum minimalism with no interest in looking like any people actually live there

Plastic grass. Fab idea. Let's wrap the planet in plastic. It's just so awful.“

And plastic windows

Has anyone ever rejected a house on the grounds of the name of the road? We did that once but as it had the aforementioned thickly artexed walls there were other reasons too but even without the walls I couldn't live there.
There's a small village near here called Kimberley, I always said I could never live there as all I can hear is the wonderful Victoria Wood, Kimberleeeeeeeeee!

Ninkanink · 26/06/2021 10:58

Honestly it’s really not a big deal. No one is being horrible. No one is being nasty.

We are all grown ups here. We don’t need to run away crying because someone is being mean.

Me too!!

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 26/06/2021 11:01

@me4real

Stoner stuff, like weird hippy murals on the walls, tibetan prayer flags etc etc. Stench of spliff.

Che Guevara anything.

This made me all nostalgic for my student digs.

@MarieIVanArkleStinks It's marginally less cringe then maybe. Grin

Mouscadoo · 26/06/2021 11:19

My ILs house has so many of these things. Recently painted kitchen this horrible shiny grey paint. They got rid of the grass from their back garden and now have a full concrete garden with artifical plants randomly placed around it. A duck toilet brush holder. So much clutter....

Bivvy · 26/06/2021 11:23

Wow there’s some very superior snobbish people on here!

I’ve found that the decor has to suit the character of the house or it won’t work no matter your taste. A Victorian terraced property may suit antique furniture and old books, but a new build would not.

I don’t think some of the posters on here live in the real world. In an ideal world we’d all live in our perfect chosen style of house and decorate it exactly to our given taste, but not everyone is that fortunate are they? If you have a ‘normal’ house, perhaps council or a shared ownership new hold because that’s your circumstances and it’s decorated with a bit of sparkle from B&M bargains that does not make you ‘naff’. Seems a bit of a ‘light hearted’ sneer at the working classes to me.

If any of my friends came round to my house, to sit around my naff marble table in my naff conservatory and sneered at me they wouldn’t be invited back.

Sounds like some people need a bit of ‘live, laugh, love’ in their lives! (Although admittedly not necessarily by way of wall art 😂)

20 pages of sniping. I'm sure you could all do better. William Morris said have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful. There is no accounting for what other people regard as either or both of those.

haveibeencaughtout · 26/06/2021 11:24

@kindaclassy I don't recognise myself at all. I live in an old French house full of stuff I've been hoarding for years. It's a mess. Nothing here passes for planned décor. I do quite like the sound of the trolls though.
The OP just sounds awful. She's gleeful about taking the piss out of people. Plus, she used the word 'loo', so she can't be all that. There's just no need for it. Of course, we all think things about other people's tastes, but to openly mock stuff isn't right. Maybe I'm a killjoy. Maybe I should get a grip and join in with the chav bashing because it's such jolly good fun!

Fluffypockets · 26/06/2021 11:25

I have loved reading this! Am guilty of both, the judging and owning!

Thank goodness we all have our own sense of style or the world would be very boring.

Grey crushed velvet sofas (otherwise known as Live Laugh Love sofas as they are always found in households with those signs or decals on the walls). Or those cream puffy leather sofas. Anything sparkly that could be described as ‘bling’. Grey everywhere.

I have a house full of colour and kitsch/vintage stuff. It’s very much to my taste but I would imagine that some people would hate it and think it’s naff. I’m ok with that.

ImprobablePuffin · 26/06/2021 11:32

I hate fake grass and fake plants/flowers. However I'm not immune from some of the other things mentioned

I have a feature wall and fairy lights in the lounge. Also a fair amount of clutter and dog hair.

kindaclassy · 26/06/2021 11:34

Oh come on, it's human nature, and it's an anonymous forum!

Most people will take the piss or comment to their partner after being a in somebody's house if they really notice something.

It goes both ways. I can't stand clutter and mess, (but I don't call good books clutter Grin ) and I absolutely HATE ornaments and "stuff".
There are still people smirking that this kind of houses are for show and not to live in.🤷

My house looks good to me. I am the one living in it, so who cares if it's not of somebody else's taste.

6788995urgh · 26/06/2021 11:36

I find people being classist and snobby dickheads really naff.

Honesty being judgemental and a massive snob is so tacky. So you've all made yourselves look like the naff ones. Eeeewww.

kindaclassy · 26/06/2021 11:38

Posters taking comments personally and being miffed their fabulous taste is being laughed at are the funniest things on threads like this Grin

I definitely agree with this, I'm trying to apply it to my own clutter of which I have too much.

As for this goady OP and the hecklers, well at least they're frothing themselves silly here and not spoiling other people's days. Some people just have to do this. Human nature it is not; it's a personality defect and not one to be proud of.

Minezatea · 26/06/2021 11:41

I wouldn't judge other's tastes as naff as honestly it just feels a bit unpleasant - like there is some reference point of (good taste) which they've failed, when there really isn't.

But what I don't personally like is shiny kitchen units, grey everywhere, sofa cushions which match the sofa, bathrooms/ bedrooms aiming to look like hotels, tiled floors (other than in bathroom or kitchen), more than one type of tile in the bathroom, kitchen units of more than one colour, a kitchen with a layout that would really benefit from an island but does not have one as the owner fears judgement, houses with a relatively good sized kitchen but no table in there due to the kitchen island, houses with multiple ensuites attached to relatively small bedrooms, houses which look like show homes rather than people's homes.

I can't see the problem with a BBQ by the way. We have a small gas BBQ and have used it enough for it to not feel like a waste. If we had a bigger garden, maybe we'd have a bigger BBQ. I'm also baffled by people's obsessions with other's hot tubs. You don't have to keep it if you buy a house with one it. Some people like them and as far as I know there's no evidence of people getting ill from being in them, so seems really odd to give a shit how other people are enjoying themselves.

kindaclassy · 26/06/2021 11:42

I am curious, if you know you will get offended by a thread like this, why do you even bother to read it?

The title couldn't be clearer Grin

kindaclassy · 26/06/2021 11:45

What I find naff is people in socks or slippers at home during the day.

And family photos the only decor on the wall. The "cake smash" pro photos are so bad they are nearly good!
