Naff things in other people's houses (Tongue in Cheek)

I know that it is a question of each to his own etc but what do you find naff in other people's homes? I was invited round to neighbour's today to gawp at their new gas barbecue that is the size of a Challenger tank. They were terribly proud of it and the husband was lovingly caressing it whilst the wife was squealing in anticipation of all the hot sausage her man was going to serve her! All I could think was 'Why? Why? Why?' What do you find naff in other people's homes and why?

Not 'naff' but I hate when people decorate their homes with animal body parts. I nanny for rich families who have a skin here, a head there, the odd corpse in a case. I mean WTF? So they can reminisce about how big and strong and brave they were, when they hid behind that tree and shot the antelope with a hunting rifle? It's hardly like strangling a polar bear with their own hands is it?! (not that I'd approve of that either, but you know what I mean!) The fox parts are even worse because they weren't just killed outright but tortured too. It scares me that these people feel no guilt or compassion but are proud of their part in that, so I find any of that 'decor' enormously distasteful.

Willowbanks completely agree! Seemingly all things John Lewis are acceptable if you’re middle class - though this would be sneered at by the upper classes. Reminds me of the line in that Bob Marley song ‘and whilst you point the finger someone else is judging you’.

So, so true

Youreacockarentyou · 26/06/2021 09:28

Well my in laws have a hot tub & let me tell you… you can look down your nose over your pretty flowery garden fence but they’re bloody fun! They also have a pizza oven, & a big gas bbq. & they’re not boring arse holes. She has loads of photos of the kids/grandad kids around & an island Grin I love their house…

yesterdaygirl · 26/06/2021 09:28

Them silver Buddha's in ppl houses as if it's really cool

Grey wall and carpets so boring

Also the silver mirror furniture dull and boring .

Dining room chairs that are grey velvet with studs on them and the big ring it reminds me of a bull ring ! at the back of the chair they are so naff .

And family photos everywhere .

youshouldbeplotting · 26/06/2021 09:28

@Lottielovescake

Overly preened cottage gardens, especially if there are tiny mismatched pots of flowers/ twee little paths/ ornaments. No that isn’t nature.
This is a cottage garden

It’s seen as a huge positive if photos are displayed as shows that there’s a positive family image and they will count to see all children have roughly an equal photo presence in the home.

Oh god, that's given me flashbacks to a family I worked with briefly who had, maybe 10 or so framed pictures of their little boy around the house, but absolutely none of his daughter from a previous relationship. When she came to stay it was just in 'the spare room' with no effort whatsoever to make it feel like her space. Hideous.

Lepetitpiggy · 26/06/2021 09:33

@Immaculatemisconception

A friend has a conservatory, which is naff but this one is so small it’s utterly pointless.
We have a conservatory. It was cheaper than an extension and houses books. Is that ok?
Lottielovescake · 26/06/2021 09:33

@youshouldbeplotting That’s not to my taste either - all the twee little flowers. I just prefer a nice lawn and some mature trees. Apologies if that’s what you like, we’re all just different!

Any friends I know with cottage gardens also have other little additions such as tiny pathways, ponds with ornaments etc

Poorlykitten · 26/06/2021 09:33

People who plant only white plants in their garden. 😉

CrappyBirthday2Me · 26/06/2021 09:34

Seriously though, poking fun at other people's houses isn't tongue in cheek it's mean. Reminds me of the cool girls bullies at school laughing at the uncool girls clothes/hair/bag etc.

Absolutely this. Stopped reading on page 2. Hope I don’t know anyone like the sneer-ers.

The whole thread has serious Amanda from Motherland vibes.

I have artifical grass (came with the house, but it's been a game changer so it's staying)
Decking
Books
Artificial and real plants everywhere
Candles
Diffusers
Feature walls
Toilet brush

And honestly I don't give a shite

There is another thread on the go at the min slating how people look as well, with body piercings, tattoos and dreads I come out shite on that one too 🤣

NewLifeInTheSouth · 26/06/2021 09:38

TVs mounted too high on the wall, just hanging there like a really ugly picture, with the wires hanging down and no furniture underneath. or a stupid little media unit that is completely out scale for the size of the TV.

Timetochange11 · 26/06/2021 09:41

We also have old fashioned woodchip wallpaper everywhere - even on the ceiling! It's a very old house, we tried removing some but the wall started to fall off so we left it.

My Dh calls it donkeys breakfast wallpaper.

Don't go to Sissibghurst then, vita Sackville West is famous for her white garden.
godmum56 · 26/06/2021 09:45

if you don't have a toilet brush, how do you clean the loo?

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 26/06/2021 09:45

@Loubiemoo

Signs. Bathroom sign in the bathroom. Kitchen sign in the kitchen. Live, laugh, love signs. ‘In this house…..blah, blah, blah……” signs. Gin signs. Lots of nicknacks around. Grey everything. Carpets in the bathrooms.
"In this house..." wall art would be entirely acceptable if it was a Tubbs and Edward style one.
ElsieMc · 26/06/2021 09:49

I have had some things in my house so long that they have become naff then back into fashion. In our garden we have a huge pampas grass which I believe had connotations with swinging back in the seventies. Which is a bit creepy because we bought from the Church and the vicar lived here.

Local upmarket florists now use pampas in their arrangements which are very pricey.

I once had a navy blue bathroom suite and my neighbour had one too which had gold swan taps. I also had an avocado one which I inherited and a family member had "Sun King". Don't think these will ever return. Same neighbour has huge garden gnomes - they are in Asda and are about 3 ft tall. I thought he was being ironic, but no.

Doghead · 26/06/2021 09:52

Wouldn't it be fun it all the opinionated bitchy people on here posted pictures of their perfect homes and gardens.

Arbadacarba · 26/06/2021 09:52

I predict coloured bathroom suites will come back into fashion in the next few years.

You saw it here first Wink.

The silver Buddha's! Yes!

I don't agree with many things people say are culturally appropriated but I do think silver Buddha's are well and truly overly culturally appropriated.

And the chairs that basically have door knockers on them. Why?!

Subbaxeo · 26/06/2021 09:56

Guilty of some of those! To those posters who think it’s mean-mean would be making people who have some of those things feel small and sneering to their faces. We often have a laugh at people on tv etc-in real life we would never be so thoughtless or cruel. I love big tvs, my husband thinks they’re really naff. I think his big shiny motorbike is naff. Are we mean to each other? No.

BarkingUpTheWrongRoseBush · 26/06/2021 09:57

Definitely coloured bathroom suites are on way back.

MaMelon · 26/06/2021 10:00

Amanda has a white gloss kitchen and drives an SUV - she’d fail the naff test.

Brendabigbaps · 26/06/2021 10:00

@HeronLanyon

Well only playing if I say there are things in my house which others would not doubt find naff - All word art of any type anywhere Light boxes Kitchen islands Large family photos on the wall (blown up studio portraits) Heart shaped ‘things’ or lots of pink things knickknacks. Mugs with messages or ‘funny’ quotes etc Dish washing brush (I don’t know why) A toilet brush Air freshener plug ins Lots of candles Lots of cushions
What do you clean your toilet with then? Not sarcastic, genuinely interested to know
