Naff things in other people's houses (Tongue in Cheek)

I know that it is a question of each to his own etc but what do you find naff in other people's homes? I was invited round to neighbour's today to gawp at their new gas barbecue that is the size of a Challenger tank. They were terribly proud of it and the husband was lovingly caressing it whilst the wife was squealing in anticipation of all the hot sausage her man was going to serve her! All I could think was 'Why? Why? Why?' What do you find naff in other people's homes and why?

Overly preened cottage gardens, especially if there are tiny mismatched pots of flowers/ twee little paths/ ornaments. No that isn’t nature.

PurpleFlower1983 · 26/06/2021 09:09

Judgemental twats is my biggest turn off in a house.

I’m not guilty of most of this thread but we do have a hot tub. Grin

Willlowbanks · 26/06/2021 09:10

So, if all these things are 'naff', what's allowed? What passes the MN acceptable chic test? Do tell. I'd love to know Hmm

Seriously though, poking fun at other people's houses isn't tongue in cheek it's mean. Reminds me of the cool girls bullies at school laughing at the uncool girls clothes/hair/bag etc.

Jahebejrjr · 26/06/2021 09:10

I have loads of these crimes against taste. I thought my house was nice Grin

ChickyNuggies · 26/06/2021 09:11

Anything blue, or sea themed in a bathroom Envy - not envy. Lighthouses or little ship steering wheels or FISH. Hate hate hate hate.

TrickyD · 26/06/2021 09:12

I have artex but I think that I need pity rather being considered naff It would be messy and expensive to get rid of, so I cope by not looking up!

Apparently it is easy and far less messy to plaster over Artex and give it a smooth surface. Probably would not work with the deep patterned sort.

Bawdrip · 26/06/2021 09:12

@Poorlykitten

These….
"We do fun" Have you done fun yet? Yes fun is done. What about you, have you done fun? No I'm doing fun later

I can't believe how many people are impacted by what other people have in their houses 😂
Jahebejrjr · 26/06/2021 09:14

It must be exhausting to be middle-class. There are so many rules you are all so desperate not to break

Poorlykitten · 26/06/2021 09:14

Love the idea of houseplants trying to prove something.

WednesburyPrinciple · 26/06/2021 09:14

Willowbanks completely agree! Seemingly all things John Lewis are acceptable if you’re middle class - though this would be sneered at by the upper classes. Reminds me of the line in that Bob Marley song ‘and whilst you point the finger someone else is judging you’.

CaMePlaitPas · 26/06/2021 09:14

A bar, like a designated place for people to display their alcohol. Can't you just put it all in a cupboard in the kitchen?

Having said that I do have a big TV, husband's choice not mine Grin

Germolenequeen · 26/06/2021 09:16

What Peach01 said - it's not a tongue in cheek thread at all 🙄

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 26/06/2021 09:16

Hot tubs
Outdoor bars
Staged photos
Ornaments everywhere
Books everywhere

Bawdrip · 26/06/2021 09:17

@Toomuchtooyoung01

Also those signs that say “soak” in the bathroom and “cook” in the kitchen, like you need instruction on what to do in these rooms.
I want one that says "shit" in the toilet and "fuck" and the bedroom
theowlwhowasafraidofthedark · 26/06/2021 09:18

Tongue in cheek bitchiness. My favourite way to start the weekend…

Jahebejrjr · 26/06/2021 09:19

I have ornaments and books and house plants everywhere. I like them Confused

BarkingUpTheWrongRoseBush · 26/06/2021 09:20

@Bawdrip Grin

We’ve got a stupidly big tv, honestly it’s awful. Dominates the room. Friend was there when delivered, wrinkled his nose and said ‘ooh darling, why have you got a chav TV?’

boatingL · 26/06/2021 09:20

Why are family photos such a big no? Did you know it’s one of things social services look for when they inspect homes. It’s seen as a huge positive if photos are displayed as shows that there’s a positive family image and they will count to see all children have roughly an equal photo presence in the home. Also things like school certificates displayed etc and kids artwork.

Jahebejrjr · 26/06/2021 09:21

Chav is such a horrible, offensive word.

Confusedandshaken · 26/06/2021 09:22

I wonder how insecure these posters must be to be so contemptuous of people with more mainstream tastes than them?

I think you must be too young to have learned that what goes around comes around. This years edgy and stylish becomes naff after it becomes popular and will eventually be retro chic in a few years time.

Poorlykitten · 26/06/2021 09:24

@Bawdrip 😂😂😂

Loubiemoo · 26/06/2021 09:24

Signs. Bathroom sign in the bathroom. Kitchen sign in the kitchen. Live, laugh, love signs. ‘In this house…..blah, blah, blah……” signs. Gin signs.
Lots of nicknacks around.
Grey everything.
Carpets in the bathrooms.

I think there's probably a list of shops that are "allowed" or something. But I have a leather sofa, so what do I know...
