DH “in love” and “buying” table I’m unconvinced on

Hello mumsnetters,

My DH and I have just moved into a new apartment & and we’re starting from scratch with furniture. He has fallen for a circular dining table - walnut with silver legs - that just seems very dark for a small apartment. Grateful for your thoughts on this table and how it would look in this room...

Ps if you think it’s fine (even though the fittings are gold, the screen for the fireplace is brass, and mirror about the fireplace is a full gold), what type of chairs would you choose? Thanks so much for advice!

I quite like it for a mad men/retro vibe. Looks quite New York? Chairs would be wood frame with smooth/fake leather seats?

Wouldn’t have picked it out but think it would look chic

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 15/12/2020 16:35

The legs are too officey. Also it's hideous.

Misandrylovescompany · 15/12/2020 16:37

Not a fan I’m afraid.

FindHungrySamurai · 15/12/2020 16:37

It’s fine, certainly not “hideous”. If he really loves it, it’s not ridiculously impractical for some reason and you can afford it then I’d indulge him.

Calmondeck · 15/12/2020 16:38

I thought the legs looked officey too but DH can’t see it Confused

Is it retro?
If so it's nice. If it's a bit of office furniture then it's not nice. Hard to tell from the pic.

Ernieshere · 15/12/2020 16:41

I like it and I am fairly fussy.

I went for a circular drop leaf oak table, which is great with DC as I can shove it against the wall save space.

Where has he seen it?

FPS123 · 15/12/2020 16:43

I’m not keen on the legs but I like the mid-century vibe. If you’ve got quite eclectic taste it could work well, especially with the parquet floor.
If you like things matchy matchy you might need to keep looking.

ButtonMeUpButtercup · 15/12/2020 16:43

It fits the room really well. He's got great taste Wink

SnowySheep · 15/12/2020 16:45

There's nothing horrible about it but it's hard to see how anyone could fall in love with it. It's just ordinary.

What chairs does he want to put with it?

FPS123 · 15/12/2020 16:46

I’d go with these kind of chairs- either in the grey or the mustard, depending on how bold your style is.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 15/12/2020 16:48

The legs do not go with that top. Looks like something that Sarah person knocks up on Money for Nothing, putting two things together that don’t go at all (sorry, you did ask). Love the floors though.......

Sportsnight · 15/12/2020 16:50

I like the top, but not the legs. I’m not a huge fan of a circular dining table. They take up a lot of space.

Chambored · 15/12/2020 16:51

If he likes round and walnut then I think this is nicer:

I don’t like the metal legs on the one your DH has fallen for. And I think silver, brass and gold will clash.

Sportsnight · 15/12/2020 16:51

(I love the look of your flat though!)

HolyBuckets · 15/12/2020 16:51

It looks quite corporate. I'm not a fan.

CroakCroak · 15/12/2020 16:53

I don't like it and think the legs are horrible. From what we can see, I think your apartment is gorgeous but I dont think that table does it justice at all.

YakkityYakYakYak · 15/12/2020 16:53

I agree, It’s a bit too officey for the home.

MrsMoastyToasty · 15/12/2020 16:55

Its very 1970s.

DryRoastPeanut · 15/12/2020 16:55

Nice stealth boast op. But my 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom place with drive, garage, front n rear garden is so much more tastefully decorated.
Still cute, cheap but real nice. You have taste.

Icenii · 15/12/2020 16:57

I liked it to start with but now think it looks like an office break out table. Is it in an office in the first photo?

I think you could style it to go in you apartment but would need some thought.

Bluntness100 · 15/12/2020 16:59

I think it suits the room, and with the right chairs would work.

On a side note I really don’t understand why if anyone posts they have anything nice someone jumps in and accuses them of boasting Confused

TheYearOfSmallThings · 15/12/2020 17:00

I quite like it, and I think it could work really well, depending what else you buy.

Love your floors too.

AuntyPasta · 15/12/2020 17:02

Because they have a massive chip on their shoulder?
