DH “in love” and “buying” table I’m unconvinced on

Hello mumsnetters,

My DH and I have just moved into a new apartment & and we’re starting from scratch with furniture. He has fallen for a circular dining table - walnut with silver legs - that just seems very dark for a small apartment. Grateful for your thoughts on this table and how it would look in this room...

The chairs you pick would make it or break it, imo.

Cheeseandwin5 · 15/12/2020 17:06

This is not really about if is nice or not- that really will be personal to you both and it really doesn't matter what we think.
What is important that you both have a fair and balanced input into your flat.
That you both can request and veto an item in an equal manner.

user686833 · 15/12/2020 17:06

I think it will go in the space perfectly. I'd it vintage?

CoronaIsWatching · 15/12/2020 17:07

Yes agree with pp my first thought was it looks like it belongs in an office

Bagelsandbrie · 15/12/2020 17:08

I really like it.

Look at Stacey Dooley’s Instagram. She’s doing her flat at up at the moment and it has a very similar vibe to your place.

LilyE1234 · 15/12/2020 17:09

It looks like it should be in a meeting room

Aquamarine1029 · 15/12/2020 17:10

Personally, I would go with a glass top table to maintain the lightness of the room.

HollowTalk · 15/12/2020 17:12

I don't like the table, sorry, but love the flat.

EileenGC · 15/12/2020 17:12

I wouldn't use it as a dining table but I could see myself putting it in a corner of my living room thinking it would look nice (it's definitely not ugly!). It wouldn't last a week before it was covered in useless crap a variety of documents, drawings, sheet music and various other 'need to be sorted ASAP' bits.

To me it looks like the perfect surface to pile stuff on. Sorry, that's probably not very helpful 😂

HollowTalk · 15/12/2020 17:13

@DryRoastPeanut

Nice stealth boast op. But my 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom place with drive, garage, front n rear garden is so much more tastefully decorated. Still cute, cheap but real nice. You have taste.
Why is it a stealth boast? She's talking about a table - no price given - to go into a flat which at the moment we can see is empty. What's she boasting about?
MrsGrindah · 15/12/2020 17:13

@DryRoastPeanut Well aren’t you a peach?!

OP I too think it looks officey , but the right chairs with soft furnishings would detract from it.

TenShortStories · 15/12/2020 17:15

I agree the legs are too office-y. As nice as the top is, it'll look weird with dining chairs around an office table.

BasiliskStare · 15/12/2020 17:17

From a practical point of view a circular table with a central leg is so so much more practical as a dining table. I think it will be fine - because the walnut top looks nice & once you get chairs round it you won't really see the central leg. So if you and DH are prepared to compromise on various bits of furniture - if it were me - I'd go with this one.

Best wishes whatever you decide Flowers

MiddlesexGirl · 15/12/2020 17:19

I think it goes well with the flat. As others say, it has a retro vibe with a bit of 'warehouse' through the legs and some warmth through the walnut. I liked the chairs PP picked out though the height may be too low?
I wouldn't worry about matching the metals. Too much matchy matchy is bad.

Disfordarkchocolate · 15/12/2020 17:24

There is no way it would stay in good condition in my house. It would end up all scratched. Its a bit small too.

DonttouchthatLarry · 15/12/2020 17:25

Another one who thinks it looks too commercial, sorry.

The different metals thing would drive me mad - I have to have curtain poles, light fittings, switches, mirrors etc. all matching Grin

lazylinguist · 15/12/2020 17:27

Nice flat! Not a fan of the table. It's not actively hideous or anything, but I can't really imagine it inspiring anyone to fall in love with it.

Eh? I love round tables but yes, legs are officey.
BowiesJumper · 15/12/2020 17:28

I agree it looks like something in an office. Not what I would go for.

Onjnmoeiejducwoapy · 15/12/2020 17:29

I don’t think it’s a dining table? The legs are all wrong, it looks like an office table. The central legs are bot what you want for eating. Plenty of tables with similar tops but more practical legs out there—this would be risky to load up with meals on one side.

Also legs look like they don’t match top, which is why I thought office. Love your appartement BTW! You can do better on tbale though.

Onjnmoeiejducwoapy · 15/12/2020 17:30

An example of a more stylish take on the same sort of design, but clealry a dining table

PickAChew · 15/12/2020 17:31

Love the top, hate the pedestal.

But no to glass. It's cold and noisy and shows up every fingerprint.

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 15/12/2020 17:32

Corporate looking, not homely at all. The glass will be showing fingerprints, will need wiping down 10 times a day

pictish · 15/12/2020 17:35

Legs are crap - it’s got a stylish retro top but legs like it belongs in an office. You can do much better.
