DH “in love” and “buying” table I’m unconvinced on

Hello mumsnetters,

My DH and I have just moved into a new apartment & and we’re starting from scratch with furniture. He has fallen for a circular dining table - walnut with silver legs - that just seems very dark for a small apartment. Grateful for your thoughts on this table and how it would look in this room...

Ha ha - honestly - aesthetics aside - I am here to tell you that a circular dining table with a central pedestal is fantastic - you can shove more people in & no- one has to have their legs jammed up against a table leg. But just my opinion - others are available Grin

pictish · 15/12/2020 17:50

Yes circular with a pedestal is fine. I just don’t much like this one.

DeRigueurMortis · 15/12/2020 17:55

@PickAChew

Love the top, hate the pedestal.

But no to glass. It's cold and noisy and shows up every fingerprint.

My thoughts also.

I love the walnut top (my favourite wood) and I like it being circular, but the chrome pedestal cheapens it (and also it doesn't match the fittings in your apartment).

It does make it look "officey".

I'd much prefer something like this...

This reminds me of that scene in When Harry Met Sally Grin

Supertree · 15/12/2020 18:09

I think it looks great. I love those kinds of legs at the moment and don’t think it will look officey unless you put it with office furniture. Mixing metals won’t matter. You want a mixture of materials, textures etc or it will look bland and wrong. I have mixed metals in my house and it looks fine. I think it would look beautiful in your very beautiful apartment! I would either put it with series 7 chairs or tulip chairs, but that is just because I love the look. I currently have series 7 (knockoff) dining chairs so I am biased Grin

But none of that matters if you don’t like it! I won’t be living there. You need to get furniture you both like, or come up with some kind of compromise such as he gets the table and you get another big item.

Looks vintage and is so much more stylish than all the ugly reproduction MCM alternatives people have posted. I really like it and agree about the style of chair a PP posted, although I'd see if you can get vintage ones (better quality for your money) and reupholster them in a dark forest green.

CountFosco · 15/12/2020 18:13

Oh, and agree with the PP that mixing metals is fine, in fact it's so fashionable at the moment I've done it deliberately in some rooms of the house.

ReeseWitherfork · 15/12/2020 18:15

Stealth boast? Because she has a dining room table?

I like a padded fabric chair at the moment.

CountFosco · 15/12/2020 18:19

I also think if you've just started buying things it may be that one or both of you sometimes gets things wrong. Or it may be that one of you can't ever make up your mind. Or that one jumps into things without really thinking or one has a fabulous sense of style. DH doesn't get much input these days because he doesn't put in the legwork and is often my brakes (although he did suggest a brilliant option for something recently that meant after weeks of humming and hawing I finally made a decision and love the outcome). But we've been together decades and he has learnt to trust my mad ideas.

copperoliver · 15/12/2020 22:50

Maybe let him have it on the condition you choose everything else lol. X

badg3r · 15/12/2020 23:51

I'm not a huge fan. It looks ok but a bit office-y. Looks hard to sweep under the legs too which would annoy me. I think I round table could work well in the flat but not that one.

Also if you're going to have young kids around I would be worried about how stable it is.

Poorlykitten · 16/12/2020 00:03

No! Legs are awful. Much prefer @DeRigueurMortis choice!

BasiliskStare · 16/12/2020 01:38

I agree with@pictish - top is nice but think you could get nicer pedestal bit. I like @DeRigueurMortis's one too.

Bluesheep8 · 16/12/2020 15:06

How is asking about a table a stealth boast? I am genuinely perplexed.
But back to the table, sorry I agree it looks like office furniture

ILoveYoga · 16/12/2020 15:25

Nothing wrong with that table. Not to my taste but if my DH REALLY wanted it, I’d say ok and then be sure the next piece was my choice.

I have learned it’s better this way rather than, say, we both live with aids we both don’t like as it was purely compromise.

katy1213 · 16/12/2020 15:30

I love your flat.

RuleOfCat · 16/12/2020 15:36

It's very much NOT my aesthetic, but I think if you're going to go for that sort of very self-conscious designer mid-century retro vibe, it needs to be accompanied by statement chairs, something like the Philippe Starck Ghost series. It would certainly work in that gorgeous space.

ScalpHelp · 16/12/2020 15:37

I like the first photo but not the second. Would look nicer if it was darker wood, or just black.

RosamundePilcher · 16/12/2020 15:48

I quite like it and I'm very picky.

CorianderQueen · 16/12/2020 15:54

Ugly, also with small rooms you want something you can shove against a wall of needs be. Not a circle

Bluegrass · 16/12/2020 15:54

Why be swayed by a load of people who might well have absolutely fucking awful taste?! I’d want to see their own homes before I even considered taking advice!

chunkyrun · 16/12/2020 16:01

I love it very retro

Bluegrass · 16/12/2020 16:03

I would guess DH is a fan or Eero Saarinen’s tulip table and is looking for a similar vibe.

pickingdaisies · 16/12/2020 16:11

Well it's nice and shiny, so shouldn't look too dark, but the legs look awkward. And what size is it? It looks like it might take up room, but not provide much useful surface. And you can't extend it (or shove a cheap IKEA table up next to it and hide it all under a big tablecloth)

QueenOfPain · 16/12/2020 16:13

The wood top and style is not right for the flooring and period of the apartment.
