Would you rather have an island or a utility room?

A kitchen island that is. My kitchen currently has a utility room with washer/dryer, sink and cabinets. If we knocked the walls down, we could keep the cabinets and would have room for an island. It's not a small kitchen so we have enough cabinet space and there's already a kitchen table so it's an aesthetics thing rather than a functional thing. Just wondering how strong the love of islands is right now.

I have a small kitchen and no utility.

I'd want a utility.

Islands are nice... when you already have a utility.

A utility room is my dream!

Utility

Utility. The ability to shut the door on washer noise (which is loud if you're concentrating on a complex recipe) is a boon.

Our island has just become a dumping ground.

LolaSmiles · 09/02/2020 08:38

Utility room definitely.

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 09/02/2020 08:39

Don't lose your utility room!

Reallybadidea · 09/02/2020 08:39

I have a large kitchen island and a utility room. If I had to choose one to keep I'd definitely keep the utility room!

Another vote for a utility.

Utility room, definitely.

I do love an island (actually mine’s a peninsula) but am so so glad that when I did my kitchen renovation I changed my mind at the last minute and went for a separate utility room. You don’t get the noise from the washer/dryer and if you’re in the middle of a big wash the piles of clothes aren’t lying about in the kitchen. Any mucky work can be dealt with in the utility sink rather than near your food area. Also temporary dumping ground for stuff that is better out of sight.

AhoyMrBeaver · 09/02/2020 08:41

Definitely the utility room, so much more useful.

Utility

Utility every time.

You'll regret loosing it.

LizzieSiddal · 09/02/2020 08:42

I have both. I absolutely love my island- it’s the centre of everything that goes on in the kitchen, from preparing the food to eating it, we have a large table in there too but we hardly ever sit at it- we prefer the island.

So I’d choose an Island but only if I had big cupboards to store the laundry and hoover/ironing board/mop bucket etc etc.

TitianaTitsling · 09/02/2020 08:43

Oh the dream of a utility!! Do not lose it!!

MonsteraCheeseplant · 09/02/2020 08:43

That's awesome. Thank you for confirming my suspicions. Closing the door on the utility is great for keeping noise levels down and hiding laundry related mess.

Utility room.

I had a large utility room and small kitchen and have just turned them into a kitchen, a corridor and a garage store + chest freezer.

I am so going to miss my utility room! We are already finding stuff that has nowhere to go. The new kitchen is wonderful but the utility room is a sad loss.

Utility every time.
