Would you rather have an island or a utility room?

A kitchen island that is. My kitchen currently has a utility room with washer/dryer, sink and cabinets. If we knocked the walls down, we could keep the cabinets and would have room for an island. It's not a small kitchen so we have enough cabinet space and there's already a kitchen table so it's an aesthetics thing rather than a functional thing. Just wondering how strong the love of islands is right now.

Utility. And a kitchen table.

MrsJoshNavidi · 09/02/2020 09:04

Utility room. With a table and chairs in the kitchen if it's big enough.

Islands are definitely a mixed blessing. It can be a real nuisance having to walk round them all the time.

Utility all the way. I don’t get the island obsession. We have a c shaped kitchen Which leaves more space than an island but still makes it feel separate from the dining area. I love my utility. Couldn’t be without it.

Utility room. It's my dream!

PickAChew · 09/02/2020 09:10

Utility, hands down.

If I had an island, people would just keep covering it with crap.

jillandhersprite · 09/02/2020 09:16

Utility for me.
And for me I would much rather have a kitchen table than an island if there's the space.
And islands shoved in but with tiny walking space around them are style over substance.

If I had an island, people would just keep covering it with crap. that would happen here to PickAChew. An island would actually put me off buying a house whereas I would look for houses that had a utility and a pantry, just the utility is ok though.

I have a utility room in my cellar.I just cannot imagine not having one.We have so much washing in our house and two weeks ago my washing machine broke. The room has since been piled with washing and I have been washing non stop since last Tuesday since the machine was repaired.I have no kitchen island though as no room for one in my kitchen.

Utility

An island in the Caribbean or even in the med would be nice.

Iamnow · 09/02/2020 09:47

Utility

MonnaLIza · 09/02/2020 09:48

Ah. Kitchen island. No utility room. I have a fairly big kitchen and we have a large table in it rather then an island. I find islands a bit of a strange contraption.

MonnaLIza · 09/02/2020 09:49

That meant I prefer a utility room. I love ours. It has even got space for an exercise bike and x trainer so it doubles as exercise room.

Disfordarkchocolate · 09/02/2020 09:51

Utility every time. No washing machine noise, no washing hanging around and all the cleaning products tidied away on a high shelf. Heaven.

I don't like islands, people leave stuff on them.

Not a fan at all of islands (other than the strife they provide if that’s tight elsewhere). Love a multipurpose table and chairs central rather than tall stool type island. Utility room for me.
I’d really love a proper north facing slate floored netted window type pantry plus separate utility.
There are some amazingly compact utility designs allowing the main room to be as spacious as poss too.

HeronLanyon · 09/02/2020 09:52

Storage not strife

lucy101 · 09/02/2020 09:54

Am designing a house at the moment for us... am much more excited about the utility than the island!

ipswichwitch · 09/02/2020 09:56

Utility room. For some reason, DH and MIL(when she’s here looking after DC) both wait until there’s a nice pile of clothes fresh out of the dryer waiting to be dealt with on the kitchen table to then start cooking all manner of smelly shit. Nice clean clothes then end up going back in the washer again.
I’d love a utility to keep washing/drying separate from the rest of the kitchen. I appreciate this is more of a DH/MIL problem - they are otherwise lovely, just have a blind spot to these things. An island however, would just be more space to put lovely clean washing to be spoilt with cooking smells.

I've just got rid of my utility room and had a peninsular. I've managed to move my washing machine into a cupboard in my office where the tumble drier was anyway - stacked on top of each other. My kitchen is now amazing !! (Well it will be when it's finished) the sink was always full of dirty washing so never got used, the back door didn't open - well it did but then wouldn't lock again so permanently shut so I've had it blocked up I've now got 2 full size sinks where there used to be 1.5.

Utility. Only way to have an island that works is to have a really big kitchen, DBro and SIL have a fab one that originally was 3 rooms back in the 18th century, they have an old farmhouse that has been extended and extended over the years. The kitchen part is generous, the island is big (probably 2.5m x 1.5m) and they have a big dining table as well.

halcyondays · 09/02/2020 10:10

I don’t have either but utility definitely.

PhoneLock · 09/02/2020 10:47

Utility. I don't like washers and dryers in the kitchen. Nasty noisy things. Ugly too.

Greenpop21 · 09/02/2020 10:49

Utility room.

daisypond · 09/02/2020 10:50

Utility. I don’t get the kitchen island thing. I have a large kitchen table instead.
