Would you rather have an island or a utility room?

A kitchen island that is. My kitchen currently has a utility room with washer/dryer, sink and cabinets. If we knocked the walls down, we could keep the cabinets and would have room for an island. It's not a small kitchen so we have enough cabinet space and there's already a kitchen table so it's an aesthetics thing rather than a functional thing. Just wondering how strong the love of islands is right now.

Utility !! Definitely.

TurkeyBasterHopeItWorks · 09/02/2020 10:51

Utility room is worth its weight in gold!

Greenpop21 · 09/02/2020 10:53

My utility has a washing line across the ceiling, a washer/dryer, a huge basket of ironing, a clothes horse, dog bowls, shelves of washing products, dog food, wall mounted ironing board etc. Where would I put it all?

100% utility room

Rockbird · 09/02/2020 11:06

I don't have either but would kill for a utility. Washing crap everywhere is the bane of my life.

Lipperfromchipper · 09/02/2020 11:10

I have both....I could give up the island although it is 4mx2m so it’s big....but I would NEVER give up my utility/laundry!! Although my utility is nowhere near my kitchen...

BikeRunSki · 09/02/2020 11:11

Utility!!! I dream of a utility room!

Jessie9323 · 09/02/2020 11:12

Utility room! Ours is priceless this time of year, it's big enough to have 2 clothes horses up against the radiator and we can shut the door so no one can see!

Africa2go · 09/02/2020 11:21

Well i love my island, really is the heart of everything - cooking, eating, chilling. We have a table & chairs too.

BUT i absolutely would not give up my utility for an island, but does it have to be one or the other? Is there any way to rejig the space (make utility smaller / stack washing machine and tumble dryer). Our utilitiy is very small but by planning it to the absolute maximum, and using a pocket door, its 100% efficient.

MonsteraCheeseplant · 09/02/2020 11:25

The utility room isn't big enough for a clothes horse. When the door opens there is only just enough space for the door to clear the cabinets/white goods.

You could look into a ceiling airer if no room for a clothes horse. We've got a 6 rail Sheila Maid and it's brilliant.

Africa2go · 09/02/2020 12:22

Ikea is brilliant for this. Clothes airers that are wall mounted that fold down flat against the wall when not in use. Think outside the box, there are lots of brilliant ideas on pinterest - American sites in particular are fab. And as I said above, consider a pocket door so you dont lose any space for door opening allowance / tricky space behind where a door opens

Jessie9323 · 09/02/2020 12:24

@MonsteraCheeseplant could you get one of those clothes horses that goes on the ceiling? Like an old fashioned one?

workshyfop · 09/02/2020 12:26

Definitely a utility

Lipperfromchipper · 09/02/2020 12:48

OP your laundry doesn’t have to be near the kitchen, mine is in between my main bathroom and my walk in wardrobe on the bedroom side of my house. Could you fit a cupboard laundry somewhere else in the house?? Like in the pics attached?

I'll look into it Jessie, thanks for the suggestion.

Not sure if i've got a spot to relocate but i'm pretty sure relocating is a right faff with plumbing etc and it isn't worth the hassle.

I've just looked into it and ceiling clothes horse would never hold enough for a single load so i'd still need to dry clothes in the house.

Utility for sure

Reallybadidea · 09/02/2020 13:26

I could get a 6kg load on mine (6 rails) . Now I've got a 10kg machine it doesn't all fit, but I chuck some stuff straight in the tumble dryer and the rest generally does, depending on what I've washed.

woodhill · 09/02/2020 13:27

Utility is so useful. You can hide things in there. I'm glad I opted for this rather than a bigger kitchen

DesLynamsMoustache · 09/02/2020 13:31

We have an island but our kitchen is big so we also have a full dining table and chairs in there. We are just about to get an extension built for a utility room and I think if it were a choice between the two, I'd go with a utility room, although I do really love our island.

minipie · 09/02/2020 14:04

Utility

Just seconding the ceiling clothes airer idea. I can’t get a full load on it (I have a 12kg machine) but can get all the non tumble dry stuff on it especially if I put things on hangers.

You do need enough space to stand next to it though and fairly high ceilings so it’s not in the way of the door opening

FiveGoMadInDorset · 09/02/2020 15:48

I can get a fi. Load from a 7kg washing machine on my 4 rack airer, hardly use the tumble drier

beanaseireann · 09/02/2020 15:48

Utility room

Africa2go · 09/02/2020 17:39

These are the wall mounted ones. I also have a metal rail where wet clothes go onto clothes hangers and hung on the rail. I think you just have to be creative with the space.
