Have any of you painted a room dark blue?

I absolutely love all of the rooms I see on Pinterest painted dark blue (think navy-ish) but I'm not sure I'm brave enough! I know it's a long shot but have any of you painted an average sized dining/family room dark blue, how does it look? What dark blue did you use? If not blue do you have any rooms painted in dark colours?
Thanks.

I painted 2 of the walls in DS1's bedroom dark blue (a royal blue) with two being the same colour mixed with white and it is very very dark. It would be like a pit with all four walls dark blue.

Snoopadoop · 11/09/2015 07:34

Oh dear as I suspected. and I'm not even talking dark royal blue, I'm talking more of a dark navy. DH keeps telling me it will look awful but I want to prove him I know what I'm doing (when I clearly don't!). :)

We've got royal blue in DS1's room too, but as there's a dado rail we've only painted the bottom. It's still very dark at times!

ALittleFaith · 11/09/2015 07:41

We've got a navy blue wall in our day room at work. Everyone agrees it's just too dark and looks awful. This is with light paint on the other walls and huge windows one side. I wouldn't do it personally.

That picture isn't dark navy.....more like a dark wedgewood.

Artfooldodger · 11/09/2015 07:46

We've done just one wall in ds's room. It looks great, but this room is more than 5m x 5m. I think smaller rooms could really be made too dark.

I think the map wall helps to break it up for his room too.

My kitchen/diner is Hick's Blue from Little Greene. Best thing I ever did, it looks amazing. I kept everything above the picture rails white.

YouMakeMyDreams · 11/09/2015 07:53

I would love it in my bedroom with all the woodwork white and nice light furniture and white bedding. I like my bedroom really dark though so am always looking for ways to decorate to keep it that way.

In the 90s I did every wall of my bedroom, it was gloom central, and messes with your eyes, plenty of light coming in from the window but your eyes struggle to focus on something in a gloomy corner, but I did also have a dark blue carpet too,

Ds had one wall of his bedroom painted midnight blue, with stars, planets and spaceships on, that was ok because the other 3 walls were cream.

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 11/09/2015 07:56

ds2's room has one dark blue wall and the chimney breast also, I really like it, but it is an attic room very similar to artfooldodger 's ....very large, coombed ceilings......it's the wall opposite the window that we have painted.

I think it was a crown paint and called something Dressy .....Taffeta or Ballgown or something along those lines.

JasperDamerel · 11/09/2015 08:01

My kitchen has three walls painted a very dark real, with the fourth (long) wall White. The units and work tops are off-white. It looks great.

JasperDamerel · 11/09/2015 08:02

Teal, not real.

bigTillyMint · 11/09/2015 08:05

Artfooldodger, I love that map on the wall!

I did one big wall in DS's room a very dark petrol (not navy!) blue, the other 3 white. I think it's about the right balance, and it's a very light room.

W00t · 11/09/2015 08:12

I'm about to take the plunge with Hicks blue in the kitchen... It does have huge windows and not very much wall though. I'm a sucker for blues though, those Pinterest pages just suck me in!
Artful, your son's room is fab.

LooksLikeImStuckHere · 11/09/2015 08:12

We have two walls in DSs room painted dark blue and I love it. I want it in other rooms! He has. Lovely big window so it works for us.

eddielizzard · 11/09/2015 08:13

i think it would look great. i have painted some walls black with the rest white and it looks fabulous.

OTheHugeManatee · 11/09/2015 08:16

My study is Stiffkey Blue from F&B. It's gorgeous Smile

BeautifulBatman · 11/09/2015 08:18

As long as you have enough light coming into the room and keep the woodwork white, I think it looks fab.

Olivepip59 · 11/09/2015 08:24

I used Hague blue F&B not navy but beautiful dark blue/black in my last house in the pantry, it was my favourite room.

Go for it, seriously it's only paint. Worst case, paint over it!

TheTravellingLemon · 11/09/2015 08:35

I think it will only work in certain rooms. You need big windows, not just for the light it provides but also as something to break up the block colour on the wall.

The more things going on the break up the blue the better imo. That's why it looks lovely in kitchens. Also, white woodwork needs to be kept fresh.

Try it and see. As PP said, it's only paint.

DoloresLandingham · 11/09/2015 09:14

I'm seriously considering Dulix Heritage Breton Blue for my study. It is SE facing so gets a lot of light, and two of the walls are lined with white bookcases, so I don't think the overall effect would be too claustrophobic. If I chicken out then I'll be using it in the downstairs loo instead...

Jux · 11/09/2015 09:27

I did my bedroom in my teens. It wasn't really what I wanted, but the parents wouldn't agree to black! It was darkish, but it was an enormous room with high ceilings and one wall was all window. Dad did all the woodwork white too, which pissed me off a lot.

DD has her room dark bluey/purple. It, too, is a large room with high ceilings, but it has one tiny little window. The woodwork is also dark blue. It is very cosy in there.

Snoopadoop · 11/09/2015 11:28

Thank you. So many posts. You're right... It is only paint. It has large oario doors at one end and double doors into the living room at the other and its a very light room. So tempted! :)

I'm about to paint my dining room navy next week! All the walls have something else on them, though - one has the kitchen door and a window, another will have bookshelves in the alcoves and a gallery wall of prints along the chimney breast, another has large sliding doors to the living room and the last one has two large white cupboard doors for the understairs cupboards and a radiator. It's actually a fairly dark room anyway and I'm going to work with the dark rather than try to make it lighter!
