Have any of you painted a room dark blue?

I absolutely love all of the rooms I see on Pinterest painted dark blue (think navy-ish) but I'm not sure I'm brave enough! I know it's a long shot but have any of you painted an average sized dining/family room dark blue, how does it look? What dark blue did you use? If not blue do you have any rooms painted in dark colours?
Thanks.

Thank you missfitt.

Hamatime do you remember the name of the valspar paint by any chance?

I'll have a look in my dried up old tins of paint pile tomorrow

I have a rich teal from dulux and I adore it.
Every single thing, every painting, every mirror, every lamp, every piece of furniture looks amazing against it.
Seriously, I could put any painting in the world on those walls and it looks seriously good.

W00t - it's a ridiculous number of lemons, we go through about a case a week! No chance of anyone getting scurvy in this household.

Jux - the clock is just Ikea, I love it.

HamaTime · 13/09/2015 09:34

Mine in coal blue

HamaTime · 13/09/2015 09:34

Is

Lollipopgirl8 · 13/09/2015 13:46

Polpo I really love your flooring may I ask where it is from? Is it stained/varnished?
Kitchen lovely looking too

W00t · 13/09/2015 15:42

I have to ask, polo, what on earth do you use them all in? Also- you must all have cast iron stomachs, as if I use a lot of lemon in a dish, mine all get stomachache!

WaggleBee · 13/09/2015 16:08

Artfool I love the map wall. What a fantastic idea. It works particularly well because of the wall shape. Love it.

PolpoPolpo · 13/09/2015 17:33

Thanks lollipop girl. I ran out of money to do a proper floor so I had to use the bare floor boards. They were a bit of a mess but I didn't bother sanding them, just bought some cheap dark wood varnish from B&Q and gave them a few quick coats.

W00t, to answer your question about the lemons, I drink a lot of freshly squeezed lemon juice with ice and soda water, lemon in hot water, grilled half lemons with quite a few of our meals, it goes in creme fraiche to make a sour cream substitute, lemon tart is also a favourite in this house. Oh and as we often have a surplus of lemons we use them for cleaning too. I've just realised how weirdly lemon obsessed I sound!!! Errr, if it helps some weeks we buy a box of limes instead?!

W00t · 13/09/2015 18:31

Grin I bet it smells lovely in your house!

As you're being so accommodating, what is a polpo polpo, please?

ChipsandGuac · 13/09/2015 18:36

Artfooldodger Can I ask you where you got the duvet cover? DS wants Union Jack bedding to celebrate where he was born!

PolpoPolpo · 13/09/2015 19:31

It does indeed W00t.

Polpo is Italian for Octopus - so my username is essentially octopus octopus.

W00t · 13/09/2015 20:53

Ah, I only know 'flop'. Question is, why do they have two words for the same thing? Or do you think it's a regional thing?

Anyway, polpo fits in nicely with the dark blue theme... squid ink!

W00t · 13/09/2015 20:54

'flop'? I wrote 'folpo'...

TiffanyAtBreakfast · 15/09/2015 15:34

I've just spent the past weekend painting white over the top of my dark blue bedroom... Confused

I loved it at the time, it was so moody and cosy. But a lot of my bedding is colourful and patterned, which didn't look as nice against the blue walls as it did the white.

If you're going to go for it though, I recommend the paint we used - Farrow & Ball Stiffkey Blue.

DoloresLandingham · 15/09/2015 22:22

Tiffany, does Stiffkey Blue have any green in it?

TiffanyAtBreakfast · 15/09/2015 22:31

Nope. Very definitely blue Smile

WaggleBee · 15/09/2015 22:51

A lot of Stiffkey Blue pins have been appearing on my Pinterest feed over the past two days, so either it's the new Elephant's Breath or I'm following some of you on there. Grin

Snoopadoop · 16/09/2015 07:00

:) you're probably following us all.

The samples are up... Except stiffkey blue, I don't know where I'm going to get that at the moment. I still like it. DH is worried and talking about having it as a feature wall, I don't want it as a feature wall.

We got the Stiffkey from Homebase if that helps!

You should post a photo of the samples for the MN verdict Smile

Artfooldodger · 16/09/2015 22:07

W00t - thank you, glad you like it!! Ds loves it too!

We got the wall map online (but I can't remember the supplier for the life of me now). It came in 4 sections. You simply pasted the wall (or sloping ceiling!) and positioned them. I recommend starting in the corner that you're matching to the edge of a wall, etc. There's just enough overlap to lay it well - we did the top 2 sections then added the bottom 2. Took about 20 minutes including mixing the paste.

Chips - I've just been to check the label on the duvet set in the airing cupboard for you. It's from Marks & Spencer. We have a challenge getting covers that he likes as he's only 7 but has a double bed. I think that's probably influenced the room as it's quite grown up for his age.

Hijacking thread for a quick question: have today put up samples of Stiffkey Blue and Dulux Breton Blue. Now, to be fair to the F&B, this is one coat only of each, and the existing white paint is very shiny and scrubbable, and probably full of vinyl. However, I can't believe the difference in coverage between the two - is this normal for F&B?

Obviously I'll use a dark undercoat and two coats of paint when we do the full job but I'm wondering if two coats of F&B is going to be enough??!

F&B on top, Dulux below.

Have any of you painted a room dark blue?
SwedishEdith · 19/09/2015 18:09

If you're not bothered about F&B actually being F&B, you could get it colour-matched. Not tried Valspar (but supposed to be good) but Leyland is good.

DoloresLandingham · 19/09/2015 18:17

Not bothered at all. Have used another flat matt Dulux from the same range before (timeless classics) and liked the coverage and finish. I just thought I'd try the F&B as it's so popular, but right now it seems like a no-brainer to use the Dulux.
