Have any of you painted a room dark blue?

I absolutely love all of the rooms I see on Pinterest painted dark blue (think navy-ish) but I'm not sure I'm brave enough! I know it's a long shot but have any of you painted an average sized dining/family room dark blue, how does it look? What dark blue did you use? If not blue do you have any rooms painted in dark colours?
Thanks.

I think with lots of white and natural light it would be OK if the blue is like that picture. Remember that pictures like that are often perfectly lit and would probably be very different in a real room where the light changes all the time.

I once visited a friend of a friend who had a fabulous kitchen with white walls, an orange feature wall and a midnight blue ceiling with spotlights. It was just gorgeous and I've dreamed of doing it ever since, but it would such a hassle I've never got round to sorting it/trying to persuade DP.

But it's one option that doesn't make the room so dark.

Titsywoo · 11/09/2015 11:48

I did in my sons room and it looks fab. Everything else is white though - one wall of fitted wardrobes, coving, bed, bookshelf. Carpet is beige. My friend just did hers in a dark navy (farrow and ball one) and again everything else is white (white shutters on window etc) and she has high ceilings. Go for it!

Ds' room is a similar blue to the Pinterest picture. I love it. His room is pretty big though (18' square) and has 3 big windows. The floor is wood so it reflects the light too. All trim is white, as is his bedding.

yomellamoHelly · 11/09/2015 13:05

I did ds's room the darkest blue I could get off the shelf. Liked it, but wasn't quite dark enough for my original vision.

Have since learnt the only way to get a proper navy colour for the wall is to find the RAL code and take that along to be mixed especially.

Am thinking I will paint other ds's room navy next time it gets done.

artfool your pictures are awesome!

My DD1 has Laura Ashley "Sapphire" on 2 of her walls. The room is south facing and the other 2 walls have beech wardrobes along one and pale paint on the other (Dulux White Cotton).

It's a gorgeous deep blue but I wouldn't want all 4 walls in it! But if you were doing a room broken up with patio doors, French doors etc I'd go for it.

Here are some photos of Hick's Blue in my kitchen, it's not as dark as it seems in that first one, all I could find on my phone though.

Good luck, bet it looks amazing.

That's a lot of lemons, polpo! Grin

Artfool- may I ask where the map is from, and whether it was pasted up or a sticker?
I want a huge wall map like that...

Snoopadoop · 11/09/2015 21:18

pol that's lovely!
I'm going to buy some samples tomorrow... I'm going to go for it.

Yep. My bedroom. ( inspector morse blue - it was that long ago).

But it was south facing with large windows ( wooden frames): I had a golden rug and golden yellow curtains, a lot of books and bed linen was mostly white.

Worked really well - when I left home, my parents used it as the study.

Jux · 12/09/2015 10:13

Polpo, that's gorgeous! I like your clock too, where did you get it? I've been looking for one exactly like that.

RaphaellaTheSpanishWaterDog · 12/09/2015 18:14

Bit late to the party, but just seen this thread and wanted to add that we recently painted a bedroom in our new (old Grin) house in Stiffkey Blue (for DS & his GF when they come to stay - in fact I nicked his idea as he wanted to paint their bedroom this colour but she preferred white Hmm)

It's not the largest of rooms, although it is South facing and it doesn't look too dark imho.....we kept the paintwork white, the bed is a vintage cast iron one painted white by the PO and we have used light-ish bedding but accessories/curtains etc are dark which we prefer Wink

Btw, excuse the clothes rail - that is now gone and replaced by an antique armchair in red Grin

MissFitt68 · 12/09/2015 18:39

Navy is lovely! Which paint op?

Please use a dark grey undercoat tho. Amazing how many people get the prep wrong! Assume it will be Matt?

I work in 'paint' btw!

Snoopadoop · 12/09/2015 22:38

I hadn't planned on any undercoat, let alone a dark grey one (amateur). What difference does it make? :)

I have to say stiffkey blue is certainly winning at the moment it's lovely.

MissFit68 as a paint expert can I hijack the thread and pick your brains?!

We want to paint our hall/stairs/landing a very soft light sage green but can't find the right colour. I love Dulux's Jurassic Stone but it's slightly too dark, I want a shade or two lighter. Any recommendations? Thanks!

Jux · 12/09/2015 23:00

When I was a teen, everyone was painting their bedrooms black. The easiest paint to get was from a large local department store. The man in charge of the paint dept refused to sell any black paint to teens! That's why I had to have navy.

BoskyCat · 12/09/2015 23:09

Aaah I remember that too Jux. I wasn't into it myself but had several gothy friends. I do remember parents getting in a state about how hard it would be to paint over in any other colour.

MissFitt68 · 12/09/2015 23:36

sidge valspar at B&Q can colour match and also have a massive colour card chip rack to choose from

Dulux classics range 'sophisticated sage' is nice

Op.... Yes you will need an undercoat for a strong colour. Creates a platform for the colour and will mean it won't dry patchy and you won't need 6 coats! Strong colours need a grey undercoat.

southeastastra · 12/09/2015 23:39

i had a pokey flat that i painted dark red and dark blue, it looked really nice! you have to make sure to accessorise though

MissFitt68 · 12/09/2015 23:39

And do the edging first and blend in when rollering the rest on or you will end up with very dark edges. Paint put on with a brush is denser than with a roller so Look out for this

Darker colours look great but are harder to get on the wall. But you can do it! Good luck

HamaTime · 12/09/2015 23:44

My hall/stairs/landing and kitchen are almost exactly the same as that 1st pintrest pic. There is a lot of white to break it up because of the doors and the kitchen units are white too but I do have a big double height wall which is all blue. It looks fab, even if I do say so myself. We used valspar paint, which I thought was really good.

AngelaRipp0n · 12/09/2015 23:44

I'd wholeheartedly recommend little Greene paint for dark colours I've did a room a very dark colour using it and could have got away with one coat.
