Your Weight should be included in baggage allowance - Discuss!

I have heard it mentioned that the cost of air fairs has gone up due to the general overall increase in weight of passengers!

Now, I know that if you want to take an extra bag on board you pay a fortune for the additional fuel reqd etc, so do you think it fair that a skinny person gets the same baggage allowance as a larger one? Would you be prepared to get on the scales with your luggage if it meant the average sized people could carry more luggage?

I am NOT being Size-ist, just would like thoughts.

(I will not get into the argument of if you spill over one seat so someone cannot sit next to you, should you pay for 2)

Milli, you're not being horrible. You've raised a topic for discussion, nothing more.

Before they start charging people by weight perhas they should start charging people by politeness esp 1. 'men' who insist on sitting with their legs as far as part as poss so as to keep their precious family jewels well aired 2. People who insist on reading their broadsheet newspaper unfolded and 3 people who rest their arms on both armrests so that their elbows stick into their neighbours.

Wouldnt taht make life so much more pleasent

I do disagree that the problem is the size of the seats though. Unless you go for a bench style, there will always be someone who's uncomfortable due tolack of space. You can't suit everyone unfortunately.

I also don't see what's horrible about the thread - no one has at all has said "yes, I think it's a good idea"

If person a is 140lb - so pays extra
person b is only 120lb (cow) - so can take more luggage

The luggage they take on weighs 20lb - so the weight it still the same???

We went to Oz for a year with DH's work. I lost 3 stone whilst I was out there and wondered if, in the event I was bringing extra luggage back, I could argue that I was bringing 42lb less of me.....

No. My SIL (who is tiny) one day made the same reasoning while doing the check in, she had lots of luggage and was asked to pay for the extra, so she looked down the queu were an overweight man was waiting and told the girl of the check in: Do you see, he is fatter than I am and he is not paying extra!. The man heard her and she was not charged I would have happily left her on land after making feel so bad a completely innocent person. I think that such measure would be humiliating for some.

My dh is 6'6 so extra leg room would be great

I don't think the larger person would be paying more - you'd be allowed a "combined weight allowance" of Xlbs. You'd only pay more if you + luggage was in excess of that.

According to most arilines your bum has to be quite narrow.

I would apreciate more leg room, the only airline where my knees don't touch the front seat (even before the person in fron reclines it) is American.

Or those people who let their children stand on the seat facing backwards at you. Arrggghhhh....I do not want to have to speak to your children for 3 hours, I do not want one of their sticky sweeties, and I don't want to play peekaboo with them! If I'm not with my brood, I want peace and quiet and a read of my trashy mag!

Yes - I think that was the original point. The fact that people have to pay a lot for excess baggage yet they could be taking less weight on to the plane than a much larger person.

so because person x is overweight to to illness or disability (or perhaps because they eat too much) they're not allowed to take as much luggage on holiday with them/business with them???

What about very fit and muscular people - they don't 'look' heavy - but put them on the scales and they're carrying a large amount of muscle weight - are they going to get penalised because they're fit and healthy??? Or is it only 'fat' weight that counts????

But someway I feel the luggage allowance is a bit unfair. Clothes and shoes for smaller people weight less and use less space. And still, we all are allowed the same

You'd probably be allowed a medical exemption certificate.

If you look at it in a purely non-emotional way, it makes sense. However, in Real Life, it's totally unworkable and discriminatory.
