Do you return to the same holiday destination every year?

Does anyone else have one holiday destination they keep going back to?

I’m just wondering if this is quite common, or if we’re a bit unusual.

It’s not even that I think it’s the most beautiful or exciting place in the world. It’s more that we know it well, we enjoy it, and there’s something really comforting about going somewhere familiar. You know where everything is, you know which restaurants you like, you don’t spend the first few days getting your bearings, and it just feels easy.

Part of me wonders if we should be seeing more of the world instead of going back to the same place, but then I think holidays are meant to be relaxing and enjoyable, and familiarity is part of that for us.

Does anyone else have a place they return to year after year? Or are you the complete opposite and would never go to the same place twice?

Our place is Grenada.

I think its unusual and we prefer to go to each place once or twice but if that’s what you all prefer there’s nothing wrong with it.

TheChosenTwo · 07/08/2026 10:38

Ideally no, and we do always travel somewhere new at least once a year now.
When the dc were little and we weren’t quite as financially secure as we are now we have friends with a villa abroad and they very kindly offered it to us every year (and they still do now), it was already set up for dc as they had grandchildren the same ages as our dc so it was literally perfect, it also came with a car parked nearby the airport fitted with appropriate car seats. It was a godsend to us in those days, we could totally relax, it was an easy holiday if not the most exciting to go to the same areas year after year.
We don’t go so much anymore although we did go once last year for a nostalgic trip down memory lane and had a lovely time.
Now we try and pack in a few new holiday destinations every year, I imagine when we are older we might prefer the less ‘exciting’ trips and seek familiarity and prioritise ease again. I understand why people do it but at the moment it doesn’t scratch our holiday itch.

We usually go for something different each holiday, but may go to the same region - eg the Balkans or the Caribbean - more than once, so we have some expectations of the place. Even if I have loved a place we have visited, I would still not choose to go back there in case the next time we went it was not as good. I don't want to recreate a previous holiday, I want a new experience.

TourdeCrema · 07/08/2026 10:48

Keswick and Westward Ho! are my return to places for relaxing breaks

I do though go away to France on holiday and often go to different places within the same area, as I like to explore different places - I'm working my way south from Dieppe and am now level with St Malo

Ive enjoyed travelling to other places and wont return as I have other places i'd like to visit.

parallhel · 07/08/2026 10:51

For fly and flop it's the same place every year mid Dec - early January Every year same place to escape the awfulness of the Christmas frenzy (to us) here ha ha. But at other times it is definitely somewhere different every time, avoiding school hols as much as possible, because I can!

Tickingcrocodile · 07/08/2026 10:54

We go to the same country every year (France) because it works out so much cheaper to do ferry and car than flying and hiring a car. Plus the holiday accommodation in France seems so much more reasonably priced than in other European destinations.

We have also stayed in exactly the same holiday house multiple times for the reasons you said. We love the area and have had so many happy times there we just always have such a relaxing holiday. Also my DC are autistic so the familiarity os very helpful for a peaceful holiday. However, to mix it up we usually do a week in a new location and then a week in the place we have stayed before. Some years we haven't visited it at all.

TonTonMacoute · 07/08/2026 10:58

We went to the same place in Brittany for about 12 years or so. It was a small seaside resort, it was easy and stress free to get there, and it just had everything we wanted for a relaxing holiday. DH was working very hard at the time, working away from home during the week, at a very stressful job, and we felt we were on holiday from the minute we arrived. People in the restaurants and market stalls recognised us from year to year, which was really nice, it was somewhere that didn't get a lot of British visitors.

The last time we went it had changed quite a lot, and because it's spent money on trying to attract more visitors it's lost much of its appeal for us, but DS is grown up now and does his own holidays (although still up for a free break with us every so often), and we tend to do mini breaks as we cannot leave me DF for too long. We loved it though, and had happy times.

ToadRage · 07/08/2026 11:09

As a child with my parents we did, we went to France every year and a few years in row we stayed in the same gite cos we liked it. With my husband we can't afford to go away every year abd there are so many places we want to go. Our last big holiday was a cruise in 2024 and next year we are going on another cruise.

Blues321 · 07/08/2026 11:40

Depends on the holiday - if it's a 'fly and flop' we go to the same resort as it ticks all the boxes. Otherwise, there's a lot of the world we haven't seen yet.

EmmaM84 · 07/08/2026 13:28

Yes I like familiarity but then to me a holiday isnt exploring, im afraid im a sunlounger by the pool type and im not embarassed to admit it. Im busy enough in my everyday life that for me I want to decompress and do nothing the whole time except read books and just be in the sunshine and spend quality time with my family and the friends we go with. We're currently in our all inclusive in Turkey era as it suits our 8yr old DD to have entertainment at night but id cheerfully go to Tenerife every year self catering and visit the same bars and restaurants I know are good. We do city breaks to break things up and see new places but to me a beach holiday is a beach holiday regardless of where. Sun, chill, food, good company and cocktails!

Our place is Grenada.

We have a place in Portugal that both we & the kids absolutely love! If we are able to manage 2 hols in a year, we try to go back there as 1, then a new place for the 2nd.
I also ask for ££ for my birthday each year and do a couple of nights solo myself when I can. I just love it! It’s warm, quiet, friendly & comfortingly familiar

Takoneko · 07/08/2026 16:16

Yes and no. We keep returning to Japan and always spend at least a couple of days in Tokyo on any trip. I now have some favourite places, cafes, bars and restaurants and favourite Japanese chains that we go back to. However, we also always explore somewhere new on each trip too. I like the familiarity of Japan, but also want to see new parts of it on each visit. We are working our way through visiting all 47 prefectures.

Echlefecker · 07/08/2026 18:10

I always wanted to go somewhere different every time and we did until we fell in love with a Greek island and went back for a second time, and it turns out twice wasn't enough. We definitely want to go back again. I loved everything about it and I don't think I would ever tire of it. My ideal.situation would be two holidays a year and every other year to go back there. Some people we met were fanatical and had been back 30 or more times. I don't know if I would be like that but maybe I would...the familiarity and doing stuff again was delightful...

ChocoChocoLatte · 07/08/2026 18:17

If we could afford Grenada am sure it would be our place too….

DemonsandMosquitoes · 07/08/2026 19:05

No. PIL went to Paignton for almost fifty years in a row so DH is dead set against. As am I. We’ve been all over. Only one hotel in Turkey we went to two years in a row as it was just so perfect. Couple of places I’d like to return to, but not yet.

Thecows · 07/08/2026 19:26

Am I the only one who does think the OP means Spain and not the Caribbean? Not that they've come back but.....

jay55 · 07/08/2026 19:33

Yes. I’ve travelled loads, and did a big trip this year to lots of places but I also return to the same place year on year. Because I enjoy it.

painauchoc512 · 07/08/2026 19:45

We’re going back to the same place in the canaries for the 5th time in February. It’ll be our third time in the same hotel. It really suits our family set up and, as others have said, we’re relaxed the minute we get there. We also really like Center Parcs and have been most years since our daughter was born. We’re lucky enough to go a few holidays/breaks a year so we mix up our well loved places with new adventures - Copenhagen, Disneyland Paris, Pittsburgh. As our daughter gets older we’ll likely vary our destinations a bit more. I’m looking forward to visiting more cities as a family.

If they mean Spain then they’ve spelled it incorrectly. The city in Spain is Granada. Grenada is in the Caribbean.

Moonnstarz · 07/08/2026 20:56

Yes I do, and I think that is because my brain likes to know what is there and where things are. Before kids I went to the same hotel in the Canary Islands 3 years in a row with my mum - we both agreed that the hotel was good, we liked the AI food buffet and it was a good location for walking to shops when we weren't at the hotel.

Since kids we have tended to do UK caravan breaks and again have gone back to some places 2-3 times.

The only issue I have is sometimes it does taint memories if the place has gone downhill (one caravan site in Cornwall we went to 3 times and the last time was awful so we aren't planning on a return visit).

I am an over planner and think since having kids I have got worse so I tend to do a lot of research beforehand on places and make an itinerary for when we are there.

wherearemypeople · 07/08/2026 23:30

A bit of both - my happy place is definitely where I holidayed as a child and still go there now. I also like visiting other places.

TheTortiePuffinNeedsHerBreakfast · 07/08/2026 23:36

Domestically yes, internationally no. I there's something lovely about always doing a week or two in a domestic place you know well, but if I was going to the expense of flights I want to see somewhere different.

Doteycat · 07/08/2026 23:49

Both. Dh and i return to one place regularly, about to go for our 7th time and our 8th is booked. It is the place we go to for our utter peace and quiet just us holiday.
But ive been to 7 other countries on trips this year also and im not done yet for this year.
It is possible to do both.

durdledoris · 07/08/2026 23:54

DeftGoldHedgehog · 06/08/2026 10:38

No, other than parents' and PIL's places in the UK, have only been to one place twice.

Would love to go back to Bellagio, Lake Como, which was our first holiday together (and set an extremely high bar). But it's so busy now and about four times as expensive.

Edited

I am going there next week!!

fifySix82 · 07/08/2026 23:57

Yes because I get really good mates at my friends holiday home in Tenerife. We try and do another holiday aswell. We’ve just got back from Greece, going to Tenerife in September.
