Do you return to the same holiday destination every year?

Does anyone else have one holiday destination they keep going back to?

I’m just wondering if this is quite common, or if we’re a bit unusual.

It’s not even that I think it’s the most beautiful or exciting place in the world. It’s more that we know it well, we enjoy it, and there’s something really comforting about going somewhere familiar. You know where everything is, you know which restaurants you like, you don’t spend the first few days getting your bearings, and it just feels easy.

Part of me wonders if we should be seeing more of the world instead of going back to the same place, but then I think holidays are meant to be relaxing and enjoyable, and familiarity is part of that for us.

Does anyone else have a place they return to year after year? Or are you the complete opposite and would never go to the same place twice?

Our place is Grenada.

We did the same place in canaries for three years as we loved it and had small children, so it was just easy knowing what was there and where everything was.

But have started going to different places again now they are older.

Peonies12 · 06/08/2026 11:11

if you like it fine, but i would never do that, so boring. There's a whole world to see. exception is we do return to same campsite as we know it well, but going abroad I'd never go back somewhere again.

MickyMoonshine · 06/08/2026 11:12

Yes but it’s a uk destination and we go with friends. The kids have grown up going there and hate to miss a year.
We’re also fortunate to be able to travel to other places throughout the year too so we’re not missing out on seeing new places.

purplecorkheart · 06/08/2026 11:13

Normally I would be a avoid going to the same place twice. However while going through a very stressful couple of years I went to the same place three times. I think it was purely that I knew it was safe for a solo traveller. I knew the area and knew there were things I had not got around to doing. I also knew there was a brilliant book shop in the area with really unusual books and those holidays I planned to chill and read.

I think with DC it can be nice to go back to the same place but I prefer to visit different places. However DP is a “same place every year” person 🤦🏻‍♀️. He’s actually very well travelled so I couldn’t have predicted it and have only just “seen” (10 years in) the subtle pressure to do the same holiday each year.

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 06/08/2026 11:14

Yes, we are boring. We go to the same place in June then the same place in February. We've been all over Greece and the place we go in June is our favourite part. February is the Caribbean and we keep thinking we should try another island but we're scared it won't be as good.

We try to do a different holiday in September if we can afford it. Like you I want to see more places- especially Italy but also Spain and Italy.

Bakeittillyoumakeit · 06/08/2026 11:20

My first thought was Grenada Spain or Grenada the island? It's been many, many years since I was in Grenada Spain so maybe the town has improved - but it wasn't great when I was there so I'm guessing you mean Grenada the island OP!

I can see why you go back there, Grand Anse beach is fabulous and Morne Rouge/BBC beach is the most beautiful in the world IMO! If you want a beautiful beach holiday then Grenada is wonderful.

I'm not someone who goes to the same place twice though, even when I go to a place for the first time I move around a lot. Even when we went to Grenada we went to St Lucia as well.

The two places I will go back to are Thailand and Mexico because they are beautiful and there are so many places to visit.

cinquanta · 06/08/2026 11:20

Just spent two weeks away in the UK. One week in a place I have visited every year since I was a baby and another in a place DH has visited every year since he was a baby.

Abroad surely it depends on what is regarded as a “destination”. Australia and the US are huge. Malta not so.

Badbadbunny · 06/08/2026 11:20

Never (well only once!). The World is a huge place and we've rarely gone back to the same country let alone the same town! We've racked up 40+ countries and even when we've gone to the same country, we've gone to different areas.

Only once did we go back to the same actual place/accommodation, but that was special circumstances (needed something quick and simple after a family bereavement and didn't have the time nor headspace to find something different) and was a disappointment. First time was brilliant, lovely apartment, nice area, lots to see and do. Second time, was pretty boring really - not the same excitement of the unknown, pretty tedious seeing the same sights, same restaurants, same shops, staying in the same place, etc. Will never do it again.

We just love researching places we've not been before, discovering new experiences, exploring a new place, etc.

Where are your favourite places in Greece and the Caribbean, if you don't mind me asking?

RubyPowderPuff · 06/08/2026 11:27

Yes, when the DC were little. We went to a really lovely campsite in an area with plenty to do for all ages for about 5 years. Plus side was that after y2 DC had friends that also stayed every year, we knew the area - supermarkets, road network and attractions, it was a bit of a home from home. (Still have a list of some attractions that we never managed to visit 😆)

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 06/08/2026 11:32

I live in Denmark. We've had 5 summer holidays in a row at a holiday resort in North Denmark and this summer the DC wanted to try something else. One is now pining for the old place. I'm definitely more relaxed at the old place because everything is so easy and we don't have to drive 15km to get milk.

starrynight009 · 06/08/2026 11:32

No. We go to so many lovely places and always say that we need to come back here again...but then the travel bug gets us and we end up going somewhere different!

The only exception is the Lake District as my brother lives there. But, even then, we tend to stay in different parts each time we go.

My one regret in life is I wish I had traveled around Europe in a campervan for a few months when I was younger. Maybe when I retire ;)

Everyone is different though! I have family who go to the same place every year.

SwirlyGates · 06/08/2026 11:50

Nope, not me.

I think holidays are meant to be relaxing and enjoyable, and familiarity is part of that for us.

I think you can sleep when you're dead. Grin For me holidays are about getting away from the mundane and experiencing new and awesome things.

Epoisses · 06/08/2026 12:02

We go away a lot ( 14 breaks this year)...go to 1 place annually as its my happy place ( UK...we try and go 3 times) plus London 4 times.
Usually new places for the rest . We arent beach holiday people....so lots of European cities.

EmpressStorm · 06/08/2026 12:17

No we don’t do this, on saying that we have visited some places a few times as we enjoyed if, St Lucia 3 times, Maldives 4 times, but always different locations and hotels. Generally though we go to different places in between as we want to try new places.

my fathers second wife’s parents did this, every year they went to Tenerife, exact same hotel, for decades. I don’t get it at all I assume it’s a comfort thing due to fear of travel or new things.

but no. Part of the joy is experiencing new places.

Octavia64 · 06/08/2026 12:18

Not in the past.

have been to the same place twice (gap of twenty years though).

buying a holiday lodge soon so things will change

OhBotherSaidPoo · 06/08/2026 12:20

I like Mallorca. I've been 4 times in 7 years, however I don't return to the same resort/area.
Thus every trip there's something new to do/see/find/explore.

FrenchandSaunders · 06/08/2026 12:25

When our kids were small we went back to the same place in Spain a few times as it suited us at their age.

We've also gone back to the same greek island a few times as it's so beautiful, and a place in Croatia. But I do want to see some different places now I'm late 50s.

RomainingCalm · 06/08/2026 12:29

We've had hotels/resorts that we've gone to several times as they've suited the family at the time - the same SC villa for a few years when DC were babies/toddlers/pre-school, then a family-friendly hotel that worked as they got a bit older, and then an AI resort as they got to the teenage years and wanted to make different friends rather than hang round with each other.

We've been lucky though as we've also been able to go to new places on other city/short breaks. When life has been particularly chaotic there is something nice about arriving somewhere familiar, knowing where things are and feeling relaxed from the minute you arrive.

Betadelta · 06/08/2026 12:30

No, we have in the past returned to a place we really loved, but never more than once (i.e. one return visit so two visits in total). There are too many amazing places to go!

CrystalSingerFan · 06/08/2026 12:42

Going back to the same place is sometimes all about the timing. When my niece and nephew were young, I'd go with my sister's family and our father to a gîte in Normandy, for several years. We all loved it.

It was easy to get to (car ferry to Cherbourg) and once we were there it was a wonderful place to stay and frankly, the mix of familiar places we loved and loads of new things to do was perfect. I'd stay for a week (then back to work) and do other holidays at other times. There's nothing like watching tiny children slowly learn that the sea and the sandy beach are fun, or that the French will sell you live lobsters that you can chase around the kitchen.

MsRubee · 06/08/2026 12:51

We have one place we return to annually, we love the vibe and the place. And for other holidays we go wherever we fancy. No rules. I’m not about “seeing “ a place, I love to experience places. Everyone is different.

Sushiqueen · 06/08/2026 12:53

We do both. We go to new places for most holidays but we tend to go back to a particular place every couple of years. It is not particularly a holiday place but DH just switches off as soon as we get there. We go wine tasting, do long walks and just relax. If we could move there we would.
The rest of the time we love exploring new cities/ countries.

zurigo · 06/08/2026 12:53

There are quite a few places that we've been to twice, mainly because we either loved them or felt that we didn't see/do everything the first time. We've been to the same ski resort three times, because the resort/snow is fabulous, but the journey there is a PITA, so I'm not sure if we'll go back now.

This summer we're going back to somewhere we've been before, because we were only there for a short time last time and there is SO much to do that we didn't have time for. We also want to relax after a busy year and know that it ticks those boxes too.

But generally, I would say that we're people who don't go back to the same place lots. We're fortunate enough to have around four holidays a year ranging from a long weekend city break to a two-week holiday and generally we'll go to new places. Life is short, the world is wide and we want to make the most of our health and opportunities.
