Do you return to the same holiday destination every year?

Does anyone else have one holiday destination they keep going back to?

I’m just wondering if this is quite common, or if we’re a bit unusual.

It’s not even that I think it’s the most beautiful or exciting place in the world. It’s more that we know it well, we enjoy it, and there’s something really comforting about going somewhere familiar. You know where everything is, you know which restaurants you like, you don’t spend the first few days getting your bearings, and it just feels easy.

Part of me wonders if we should be seeing more of the world instead of going back to the same place, but then I think holidays are meant to be relaxing and enjoyable, and familiarity is part of that for us.

Does anyone else have a place they return to year after year? Or are you the complete opposite and would never go to the same place twice?

Our place is Grenada.

We have done a mixture - same place skiing, mix of same/different campsites when the children were young, but also lots of travel to different short, medium and long haul countries as well as at home.
We wouldn’t want a holiday home as we like to travel.

helpfulperson · 06/08/2026 13:18

I have two holidays a year. One to one of three places and one to somewhere new.

sillypossumsmum · 06/08/2026 13:18

No, always somewhere new

AlwaysExtraHot · 06/08/2026 13:19

Not every holiday, but I’ve been to Croatia four times, albeit always to a different part. I do like going to new places too though, but I know that when I’m lacking the time and energy to think of/research destinations and just want a lovely clean sea, beautiful scenery and fascinating history and architecture, it ticks all those boxes.

Where are your favourite places in Greece and the Caribbean, if you don't mind me asking?

Paxos and North East Corfu. And Barbados, the West coast. Quiet, beautiful great food, wonderful beaches. Those are my criteria!

YellowMallow · 06/08/2026 13:28

I have a couple of holidays a year, mostly UK but occasionally abroad.
Once a year I go back to the same area, as I love hiking, and it will take years to explore it all.
I am the type of person though who loves to explore and really get to know somewhere, so a visit once wouldn't be enough if I really loved it. I also love new places so it's finding the balance.

Sassylovesbooks · 06/08/2026 13:34

No. I don't want to go to the same place over and over. Yes, I have visited several different parts of Spain, for example but I have never gone back to the exact same place and/or stayed in the same hotel. Generally, I like to visit a country and if I do go back, visit a different part or go to a completely different country.

Last year we went to Turkiye, this year we are off to Bulgaria. Year before we visited the Greek Island of Kos.

I could of written this post, exactly what I have been talking about to my husband, and we have decided to keep going back to the same place for our main holiday and maybe try other places for a shorter visit, would hate to shell out hard earned money and take 10 days holiday from work only to hate it

NotDarkGothicMama · 06/08/2026 14:01

I like going to different places but have been to some local destinations more than once, e.g. campsites that are beautiful and well-located. Not so much for big holidays, although right now we're on holiday with the DC in the same place DH and I enjoyed on our own and wanted to show them.

Trying not to repeat the same places has meant a couple of slightly disappointing holidays that haven't been as good as the last ones, but we've always had a good time.

Not really. I mean, I go to London a couple of times every year, but it's only for a day or a weekend. But in terms of longer, proper vacations...I try not to repeat places too often, because there's so much of the world that I'd like to visit. But I do occassionally return to a place I have already visited. Mostly places that don't require a whole lot of travelling and effort for me.

squirrelchops2 · 06/08/2026 14:12

There's a Greek island we love and try to get there for a week every year. My partner says it's like going home.
That's the only place we return to.
However it isnt usually our main or only holiday as we go away about 4 times a year so this is just one break. The other trips are always to new places.

But why would you hate it, if you read the reviews and do your research the risk should be minimal.

CrushingOnRubies · 06/08/2026 14:34

Not every year but have been to a village in southern Brittany a fair few times. My DPs still go every year but it’s not their only holiday

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 06/08/2026 15:06

When the dc were little, we went to the same place 6 years running. We’d paid a deposit for another year, but Covid put paid to that. By the time we were good to travel, we’d grown out of it.

Ginmonkeyagain · 06/08/2026 15:12

We go to a music festival in the south of France every year, mainly for the festival but also we have grown to love the town it is held in and have favourite places and friends there.

The first couple of years we would spend the whole holiday in the one town, but now we split the holiday and spend 4-5 days in a nearby region or town/city we have not visited before (generally within an hour or two's train journey). However we still really enjoy the four days or so we always spend there every year - it feels like coming home. The two years during covid we couldn't travel abraod, I missed it like an ache in my heart.

We do also go on other holidays as well throughout the year- this year we are also going to Porto and Antwerp and Mr monkey has been to Hamburg.

AllFadestoBlack · 06/08/2026 15:13

Yes, we've went to Spain the last 3 years and stayed in the same resort and same hotel (same room twice!). It's not a holiday we would normally choose but it works while our daughters are young. The short flight and transfer also suits us.

The hotel is clean, the kids club is brilliant. The staff are wonderful and the food is good. It's a week of guaranteed sun. When our daughters are older we'll go elsewhere and hopefully all do more of the holidays we did pre children.

We go around 3 holidays a year but trip to Spain is an easy option.

WorstPaceScenario · 06/08/2026 15:13

We tend to do repeat weekend trips to a handful of places repeatedly, but never have a holiday in the same place twice.

Ted27 · 06/08/2026 15:20

I have been coming to the same flat in Shanklin on the Isle of Wight for the last 6 years. Here now. I wish I'd discovered it sooner. I just feel happy here. Ive brought foster children and they loved it. My 22 year old still comes with me though only stays a few days now.
We visit Edinburgh regularly as I have friends there, though I would like to explore further afield.
We also visit friends in Cornwall every year.
When my son was younger we had several years revisting my childhood holidays in North Wales but we aren't wedded to one particular place.
I did a lot of travelling in my late 30s early 40s. Ive been on some amazing trips in Africa. There is nowhere that I desperately want to visit that I haven't been to, though I would like to visit one of the Greek islands again and maybe see the fjords in Norway.

KingscoteStaff · 06/08/2026 15:29

Yes - Thirlestone, Lech and NE Corfu.
We both have v. intense jobs and we find it so relaxing to know where everything is and not to make any ‘might be brilliant, but might be dreadful’ decisions.

readingmakesmehappy · 06/08/2026 15:35

Yes. Family ties and it’s lovely. Weather is good usually. DS is autistic and finds it easier to go to places he knows (our trips aboard to new places have been very very difficult). We don’t have to fly to get there.

The fjords are outstanding. Definitely go :D

If you think the Fjords are outstanding (and they are!) try going further up North if you haven't already! Tromso, Svalbard and especially the Lofoten Islands are just a million times better!

We’ve been to several places more than once, like Barbados, Malta and Australia. We go back because we like these places but we’ll generally stay in a different area each time. For Australia, we’ve been to different cities on each trip we’ve done.
We also go to new countries, either in Europe on a city break or longer trips further afield. We also head off within the UK to stay a couple of days in places we haven’t been to before and if we like it enough, we’ll go back.
There is so much of the world to see and the memories and experiences gained from new places are invaluable.

antipodeansun · 06/08/2026 18:39

Every summee for the past several years we have spent 5 days on on island, with a group of people we largely only see there (some exceptions)
It is simple accommodation, devices strictly banned, outdoors type of holiday.
We all just swim, read, kayak, go for walks, paint, chat, play card or board games. There are dinner crews so you cook dinner once during the stay for the whole group. Children roam around in groups, teenagers do their own things
It is just incredibly relaxing. I love the easy predictable nature. You can spend the afternoon on a kayak or read under the tree or have a deep conversation with someone or spend days sleeping.
It is not our only holiday, but we all enjoy it as much as some much more luxurious or exciting holidays
