Do you return to the same holiday destination every year?

Does anyone else have one holiday destination they keep going back to?

I’m just wondering if this is quite common, or if we’re a bit unusual.

It’s not even that I think it’s the most beautiful or exciting place in the world. It’s more that we know it well, we enjoy it, and there’s something really comforting about going somewhere familiar. You know where everything is, you know which restaurants you like, you don’t spend the first few days getting your bearings, and it just feels easy.

Part of me wonders if we should be seeing more of the world instead of going back to the same place, but then I think holidays are meant to be relaxing and enjoyable, and familiarity is part of that for us.

Does anyone else have a place they return to year after year? Or are you the complete opposite and would never go to the same place twice?

Our place is Grenada.

We go to Mallorca twice a year, same town, same hotel, we love it. We know the restaurants ( all inclusive is my idea of hell ), we know which are good which are not so good, who’s better for fish, who’s better for (insert food of choice).
We love the beach, the seas amazing.
we do have other places we want to visit but they’ll be extras not instead of, especially America, after the orange shitgibbon has gone, also Iceland.

Yes this is exactly us too - I go elsewhere too but always go to Majorca once a year - my California stints are on hold though and we can usually combine with business so that’s a bummer!!

We go back to the same place every year, my dc are still very young, we like the resort, it feels safe, holidays are so bloody stressful anyway with young children, we try a different hotel every year based on what we have seen and fancied the year before.
We do supplement this with UK breaks to different places, Euro Disney etc, but for the main summer holiday it's always Mallorca. We'll branch out a bit once dc are older, but not yet.

When our son was younger we always went to Puerto pollensa or Cala d’or - which we’re both great with a young child , now he’s an adult we tend to go Asa couple to the south west of Majorca as we like going into Palma a bit and have the car up to Deia/valldemosa/soller etc -

No is the simple answer. I would love to re visit most places we’ve been, but there are so many wonderful countries awaiting exploration that I can’t justify going back to the same place. Maybe if I had tons of money and I could afford several holidays a year.
I was chatting to a friend about holidays the other day. She said that she may only have 20 holidays left in her life so she has to start thinking carefully about all the places she wants to go and try a new place every time. Her words resonated so I came home and wrote a bucket list.
I think that maybe Japan would make it on the list of re-visits as we didn’t scratch the surface and there’s so much to see. It’s a wonderful country.

We started going to the Lake District in 1988 as my parents had a holiday home there. We went a few times a year with our baby daughter then son too when he was born. We carried on going long after the holiday home was sold, right up to 2024 when we moved there along with our daughter and her family.
We did holiday in France for many years usually going back to the same place for couple of years before discovering somewhere else. I find travelling quite stressful and worry about what sort of Airbnb we’ve booked so familiarity removes a lot of the stress.

TeamGeriatric · 06/08/2026 23:26

I prefer to go somewhere new, but my ideal holiday has a cultural focus, they are not typically resort focussed. There are a couple of places that are en route to visiting family that we have been to multiple times, like Singapore and in the same vein we have done short stops (4 or 5 nights) in the Maldives twice. I have returned to a few places with my husband and kids that I have been to before but are new for them, like last year we did both Florence and a stopover in Tokyo, not the same trip clearly. We may repeat Tokyo as everyone keen to return. In the UK I have some favourite places for long weekends, we go to Lake District at least annually and have been to London multiple times, sometimes stay in the same place, depends what's available.

I wasn’t expecting Liverpool in January! I’m just being nosy but what takes you to Liverpool every January? Must be family?

No family. Absolutely love Liverpool. We live in Dublin. I'm an Evertonian.

supercrone · 06/08/2026 23:30

I have such a long list of places I'd like to go that I rarely return to the same place.

Imanexcellentdrivercharliebabbit · 06/08/2026 23:36

GranAda is one of my favourite cities in the world

GrenEda not sure lol, not been there - but have seen lots of the Caribbean but in more recent years prefer Indian Ocean destinations-Maldives/Seychelles etc

You clearly love the place so you do you - if it ain’t broke why fix it!

BauhausOfEliott · 07/08/2026 00:11

We sometimes go back to the same areas for UK holidays, but they’re not usually our ‘main’ holiday if you see what I mean.

Also, DP travels all over the country as part of his hobby, and we’ve been together 23 years now, so there really isn’t any area of the UK and Ireland we haven’t been to at least once.

We might go to different places in the same country, but so far we haven’t really revisited the same towns overseas. For example, we’ve had holidays in three very different parts of France, breaks to two different German cities and two very different places in Italy. We have been to New York twice, but 15 years apart and in different seasons (it was -9C and under a foot of snow the first time, and 32C and intense sun the second so it almost felt like two different cities!). Mostly we try to go to new places every year.

I couldn’t be someone who kept going to the same place over and over again. I have a friend who despite being wealthy only ever goes to her parents’ holiday home in Greece, year after year after year, never any other trips. Each to their own but I’d find that very dull.

Grannalintab · 07/08/2026 06:21

Assuming you do mean Grenada, rather than Granada in Spain, you appear to have sufficient funds to go to somewhere fairly exotic and for me that would mean exploring, maybe alternating somewhere different with your familiar place. I must admit I am lucky in having the option of going to my favourite place in Makadi Bay, Egypt, most years, but also exploring new places as I can take more than one holidays per year, but really you should just do what works for you.

No I would never want to return to the same place twice when there is so much of the world to see.

This is exactly how I feel.

I do know someone who goes back to the same place and in her case this is indicative of her lack of confidence. She likes to “know everything” about her destination and being an expert on the local restaurants, the sights, even the staff in the hotel.

We are all different and you should have the holiday you enjoy OP.

There is a level of that in the folks I knew who did it. It was a comfort thing and a lack of sense of adventure, they just wanted a nice holiday , they didn’t want to see the world, and they wanted somewhere they knew how it operates, knew the hotel, staff, location etc, it was simply about the holiday for them.

and I don’t see anything wrong with that, but it’s not for me , I want to see and explore new places, experience different cultures, foods, people. Our daughter has grown up very well travelled, she’s been to so many places, experienced so many different cultures, she’s a confident traveller. Which I think is a hugely positive thing,

The people I know who do multiple returns to the same are all very adventurous travellers, traveling numerous times a year and then add on a return destination as a nice little extra week abroad.

Helllllooooooooooo · 07/08/2026 07:20

Caravan type holidays in the uk yes, been to the same places multiple times for long weekends, these are more “kids” holidays where we use all the parks, soft play, swimming pools etc.

Main family holiday is always somewhere different in Europe, with a mixture of relaxation on a beach/by a pool and days out to museums or different cities via train or car. I am a bit of an experience collector though and plan the itinerary for holidays in quite detail.

My last holiday I tried to just go with the flow and not plan ahead, but by day two I felt like I was missing out on something and used AI to create an itinerary for the rest of the trip. I am willing to be told I am the odd one here though!

SignsofLife · 07/08/2026 07:32

We go back to the same Greek island virtually every year and have repeated a few stays in the UK . Other than that we tend to go to new places . However I do find the new places generally disappoint!

ViolettaScrambler · 07/08/2026 07:39

Not intentionally but because of circumstances. My dad’s family has a house near Cromer so most school holidays we head to the coast to stay there because we can. It’s no hassle, we leave toiletries/ bedding/ set of towels etc there and it’s only about 2 hours from home. . And when we go abroad we usually go to same part of Spain as my mums sister lives there and we have big family holidays with cousins, now it’s a huge thing as most of us have children , it’s usually may or October half term that we go. It’s nice as we sometimes only see certain family members when we all de camp to Spain!

VeronicaRaven · 07/08/2026 07:40

Sometimes, is my answer.
This year is the year of returns, accidentally.

I go on a lot of cruises so it's hard not to go somewhere multiple times. Last year I must've been to Mallorca about 5 times, I don't particularly like Mallorca but the cruise lines do.

One of the stops earlier this year was Lanzarote, and I'm going there in October for land holidays.
This kinds of returns.

However we had a favourite place in Menorca some years back and went there a few times, haven't been since 2017. I'm actually going to Menorca next month but not to the same place, however the island is so small I can easily pop in.

And lastly, returning to a place we went to last year in Suffolk in a few weeks. It was just so good last year, but probably won't be going back after that, it would be boring.

I generally prefer new places, it's not how it worked out this year but I'm not unhappy about it, going on 4 holidays, if you told me when I was growing up this would be even remotely possible I wouldn't believe it, so I'm grateful this is my life and I can travel to places new and old.

Ooodelally · 07/08/2026 07:44

I like to holiday somewhere different but I’d never say never to going back somewhere really special. I’ll happily day trip/weekend stay to the same places over and over again though, there’s definitely something nice about already knowing the basics of a place…

UggyPow · 07/08/2026 07:47

Yes always same place as we take my young adult (AuDHD) with us & if they aren't relaxed/safe/fed then I wouldn't get a break.
Hoping to get to the point where they can be left with carer's so I can do some short breaks other places at some point in the future

SparklingTurquoiseOcean · 07/08/2026 07:59

May half term we go to Cornwall because my 12 year old loves to surf and body board and there really is nowhere quite like Cornwall for surfing. In the 6 weeks holidays we make sure we do something different. Am tempted to take the plunge with Eurocamp next summer

Onelifeonly · 07/08/2026 08:23

No, though for many years we had access to a shared family place in a lovely area and did go there at least once a year but not usually as our main holiday (other than the cost of petrol, it was a free break).

Apart from that we have twice been to the same place three times. Both when our children were very young. Once was unintended but we'd booked to go with a particular holiday company and the venue we chose had to be closed near the date of the holiday so we were offered a longer holiday at another of their venues instead as compensation - a venue we'd already been to twice before.

The older I get the more I don't want to return to places I've already visited!

Ttcwpcos · 07/08/2026 08:35

There's places we would go back to but we're a family who likes to visit new places and see new things. We do like Lanzarote though and have returned a few times, partly because we have a friend who does ironman out there so a couple of trips was to support him. Now it's somewhere we know so if we wanted a holiday of sitting by the pool/sea we would go there because we have seen everything we want to see.

CatA27 · 07/08/2026 08:39

I was always a 'never return' type of person (apart from Venice but only for short breaks) but my husband brought with him.into our relationship a time share in Gran Canaria (I wasnt a huge canaries fan either) however, having been there every year for the past 4 or 5 years I have to admit I love going back to 'our apartment' and not spending the first part of the holiday trying to suss where everything is and working out decent places to eat etc. We already know and its just straight into relax mode. I love it. I wouldnt want it to be our only holiday and we do a few city breaks or another longer holiday each year but as our total down time week its the best!

Imisssleep88 · 07/08/2026 09:18

My partners parents always went to the same place every year, I would happily go to Santorini every year but as we can only really afford/have the annual leave for one holiday a year and we want to see other places we do go elsewhere, but Santorini remains my favourite.

Elainar · 07/08/2026 09:40

We go to visit PILs in the US every year. Tbh I find it boring although it's a tourist destination, but the dcs and DH like to see family and we'll probably continue going there for as long as the PILs are around.

We have a 4 year gap between dcs and we've revisited a couple of toddler-friendly places with dc2, just because it worked well with dc1 and it's lovely seeing dc2 enjoy the things that we did with dc1. But we don't have much urge to go back again.

Generally we like to visit a new place for our main family holiday, and try out new things. We go abroad 2-3 times a year (once to the US) and dc1 will get bored of family holidays by age 16, so there are only about 12 more holidays left in their childhood, and I want them to have visited lots of different places in the world. Going back to the same place takes away an opportunity to visit somewhere new.
