Do you buy everyone new?

Hi all,

Im curious!

When going away more so with children and partners, do you buy yourselves all new outfits?

How many day outfits do you buy like swimwear and cover ups. How many evening outfits?

I know some people like to take previous outfits away but I love the feeling of putting new on when away. Feels like a nice treat. However doesn't feel so great panicking has everyone got enough with the endless lists and calculating it all. I don't put things in catalogue or credit cards though. Just curious as to what others do and spend, ends up a dear do when you include spending money, holiday cost etc 🤦🏼‍♀️

Hahahaha This reminds me of my mum who always buys herself new pants to wear at Christmas 😂 x

I like her style, but couldn’t justify two packs a year 😜

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 06/03/2026 14:22

I remember a girl at school saying that her parents bought new clothes for her for holiday and everyone was amazed that was in their 1970s.

Moltenpink · 06/03/2026 13:14

No OP, no we do not do this. Are you mad or just very rich?

Just sad I think.

Some people need to spend money to make themselves feel better.

LuckyAmy1986 · 06/03/2026 14:23

Er... no! This may horrify you but we buy most of our clothes from vinted as well! can't imagine forking out a grand kitting the fam out with all new clothes for a holiday (for what, perfect photos?)

And we are firmly in higher tax bracket so please don't tar us all with the same brush!

However, if you are at least donating clothes often and getting wear out of them at home for the rest of the year, well...not so bad I suppose.

Eufyon · 06/03/2026 14:11

I imagine with the popularity of WLI, lots of people will be buying all new summer 2026 wardrobes!

That's very true!

SwirlyGates · 06/03/2026 14:25

Wow no, I've never thought of such a thing. Some of my holiday clothes rarely see the light of day except on holiday, as it's mostly too cold here to wear them, so they last years.

As for 7-8 evening outfits, we obviously have different holidays from you. Hand-luggage only (so limited outfits that get washed and reworn), time spent travelling and sightseeing rather than in beaches and smart restaurants... honestly, one evening outfit is pushing it. 😆

Well they seem to make there way to a charity shop if I dont like them any more or I've seen something nicer. Sometimes I find that somethings I wouldn't wear in the UK if it was warm and vice versa some uk summer clothes I dont find suitable for a abroad holiday. If im going away every other year I like to make an effort

You could probably afford to go away every year if you weren't so wasteful 😳

I can't help but think if you think you need all new clothes for holiday you are probably similarly wasteful in other areas too.
I wear the same clothes for years! High income family. I don't really bother needing to have 'this years fashions' every holiday, I just buy decent staples and wear them for several years. Might buy the odd item new for a holiday when needed but I cannot fathom taking a whole suitcase of brand new clothes on holiday, madness!

Chewbecca · 06/03/2026 14:26

Wow, how wasteful.

No, I don't. New knickers perhaps. And one or two new items.

LittleArithmetics · 06/03/2026 14:31

Where did this crazy idea even come from?

LucyLoo1972 · 06/03/2026 14:33

We tend to go on a sunny abroad holiday 3x per year (perhaps April, June and October), and I would usually buy quite a lot new for the April holiday and then use it for the following couple of holidays. I have built up a collection of really nice sundresses now though and no longer buy new ones unless I really love them. Same with swimsuits… I’ve replaced all of my cheaper ones with Hunza G over the past couple of years and will probably only buy one each year now.

DH will buy himself a couple of new shirts and some new white t shirts for each holiday.

The kids have all new clothes and shoes really as they’re still young and have grown out of those from the previous year.

I used to buy all new clothes for every holiday when I was younger. But now I buy better quality and find I actually want to wear things more often now.

I had one swimming costume for about ten years and we went abroad multiple times a year as my mother lived abroad

nopalite · 06/03/2026 14:35

A mix tbh. I hadn’t been on a beach holiday for a while so did buy some new stuff for my last holiday. Some dresses and accessories. There’s bits that didn’t work, some that stay in rotation and other things that go away for next time.

I like a few new things but try not to go mad. I do love packing and organizing it all.

IceStationZebra · 06/03/2026 14:38

The whole concept is just weird to me!

  • I don’t have an annual hot climate holiday
  • I buy clothes I like so I want to wear them a lot
  • children grow out of things so quickly it would be pointless, they’d only wear an item once or twice
I have a few items of clothing like swimsuits and light loose dresses that I don’t get to wear very often, but it’s a nice treat to get those out on the few and far between hot days or when I do go on holiday!
Fairyliz · 06/03/2026 14:38

Blimey I have holiday photos going back 16 years and I am wearing some of the same clothes as I wore on holiday last year.
If you have clothes that you only wear on holiday surely they wouldn’t wear out only being worn once or twice whilst you are away?

goz · 06/03/2026 14:39

Why though? Did you only pack one single pair of pants too?

boringperson123 · 06/03/2026 14:40

I go abroad usually around 4 times a year so definitely don’t want to be buying all new that many times

LucyLoo1972 · 06/03/2026 14:40

goz · 06/03/2026 14:39

I dont know why - I dont think it was healthy.

we had plenty of money. it meant I wa putting on a wet swimsuit.

I think I was in a financially abusive marriage when I look back. I had a terribel breakdwon

mcmuffin22 · 06/03/2026 14:40

This takes me back to holidays as a kid where my mum would buy clothes specifically to save for our holiday. Weird as we didn't go until August so half the summer was over by then. I usually have to buy the kids some new swimwear and shorts each summer but not specifically for holidays.

Happyjoe · 06/03/2026 14:41

Not had a holiday in years, but I didn't used to. The only thing I'd buy new from one year to the next was sunscreen.

Bilbobagginsbollox · 06/03/2026 14:42

I didn’t even know this was I thing! I didn’t even know people had holiday clothes either. I just take clothes, there might be one or two new things if needed but that’s all.

MmeWorthington · 06/03/2026 14:43

Wellthisisdifficult · 06/03/2026 13:55

This is so out dated now and the sort of thing I associate with people of my parents generation (I’m late 40s).

Much more mindful, esp for the environment to keep using the same things you will most likely only lose for a couple of weeks each year. If something needs replacing, eg the material in a swim suit has gone then it gets replaced

I am your parents generation and I can't stand mindless consumerism - which is something I associate with the Influencer Generation.

Or maybe...just mindless consumerists

FriedFalafels · 06/03/2026 14:43

I generally never buy new for holidays unless it’s something one of us need. That’s purely down to either outgrowing if kids or worn through if me.

Less materialistic things equal more adventures, holidays and memories for our household!

GretaGip · 06/03/2026 12:41

Obsession with consumption, fashion, clout and image is fucking this planet in its arse.

Buying stuff to wear a couple of times because you like the feel of new clothing on holiday is unconscionable.

Giving it to charity shops afterwards does zero for the planet so don't let that make you feel slightly better about your choices.

Yes, all of this. We are truly fucked as a species.

I’ll sound like a judgemental cow but I suspect there’s an element of the holiday snaps on FB or Insta being a factor. Shock horror that someone might see you in something you wore last year 😱

PyongyangKipperbang · 06/03/2026 14:43

Was talking to my colleague (20 years old) about her forthcoming holiday and she said that needs to get a "load" of new bikinis. I asked what a load was in numbers and the last time she went abroad for 10 days she took twenty bikinis with her because she will only wear them once each. I said, cant she take those away again and she said no, she wanted new ones.

Blew my mind but its her money!

HortiGal · 06/03/2026 14:43

It’s MN where you wear the same clothes for 20 yrs or you’re wasteful!
I do have holiday items I rewear but I do buy quite a bit new each year as I like new trends etc , we do go away quite often, you’re allowed to treat yourself.

RasaSayangEh · 06/03/2026 14:43

MN is an education sometimes - it never would have occurred to me as a "thing"!
