Do you buy everyone new?

Hi all,

Im curious!

When going away more so with children and partners, do you buy yourselves all new outfits?

How many day outfits do you buy like swimwear and cover ups. How many evening outfits?

I know some people like to take previous outfits away but I love the feeling of putting new on when away. Feels like a nice treat. However doesn't feel so great panicking has everyone got enough with the endless lists and calculating it all. I don't put things in catalogue or credit cards though. Just curious as to what others do and spend, ends up a dear do when you include spending money, holiday cost etc 🤦🏼‍♀️

The only things I buy are things that are needed anyway and also needed for the holiday. I’d rather save the money towards another holiday than a ton of extra clothes we don’t need.

Bilbobagginsbollox · 06/03/2026 14:42

I didn’t even know this was I thing! I didn’t even know people had holiday clothes either. I just take clothes, there might be one or two new things if needed but that’s all.

As this thread demonstrates, it isn’t a “thing”! A teeny tiny minority in fact

I do for quite a few things but when your kids like to wear the same things it's not easy to find multiple sizes. Plus there's loads of things I've bought where it's arrived and been awful and needed returning.

Even when you do find things suitable it still adds up. For a weeks holiday you need 7 evening outfits, plus multiple day time items, multiple swimsuits (which I'd never want to buy second hand anyway). Buying all this even on Vinted would indeed cost hundreds

just... don't buy the new clothes for holiday then...

So odd.

no i don't, I often only wear my summer holiday clothes on their one week summer holiday a year so don't need new every time!

Me too, I’ve had some summer dresses for over ten years.

This. I can't believe people buy a whole new wardrobe just for holidays

And ime, from work colleagues, it’s usually nasty shit from Shein and TEMU that look ghastly!

I dont know why - I dont think it was healthy.

we had plenty of money. it meant I wa putting on a wet swimsuit.

I think I was in a financially abusive marriage when I look back. I had a terribel breakdwon

It’s just for you to post it as a preferable option in response to a person who sometimes buys an annual bikini.
A swimsuit is underwear, is unhygienic to wash in the sink and only wear the same pair over and over daily. Let alone having to put it back on soaking wet.

Lourdes12 · 06/03/2026 14:48

I couldn’t afford it

luckylavender · 06/03/2026 14:50

RobinEllacotStrike · 06/03/2026 12:08

Yes I buy new everything for all of us and then when we leave the holiday I throw everything away and just come home with hand luggage.

It makes travelling so simple & easy, especially with children.

This has to be a joke

yes - sorry. I didnt mean it to sound like a preferable option. I was more affirming how nice it is that OP treats herself and how dysfucntial my life was.

The same mentality as folk who go to festivals and leave tents etc in the field when they’re going home. Disgustingly selfish behaviour.

CocoaTea · 06/03/2026 14:53

Sunshin80 · 06/03/2026 12:21

Mainly because I see nicer things come out and prefer to take those.

Your method sounds insane to me.

Incredibly wasteful.

And re: spills and sunscreen - you know clothes can be washed right?

Ssmiler · 06/03/2026 14:55

Some of my favourite holiday dresses are 15 years old! Still look great. I only buy new if I specifically need something - such a waste otherwise as they get worn so little

NetZeroZealot · 06/03/2026 14:55

DoggerelBank · 06/03/2026 12:07

Goodness. I can't imagine having nothing better to do with my time and money, and with the planet's resources, than this.

Precisely.

Snorydog · 06/03/2026 14:56

This makes me feel sick…

TheKateColumbo · 06/03/2026 14:57

How do people keep clothes for so long? Do you spend loads so they’re amazing quality or buy loads of clothes so they’re not worn as much.
The two pairs of shorts I bought for an our last beach holiday three years ago look dreadful now as they’ve been worn to death round the garden.
We only do a fly and flop every few years, DH and DC prefer to do several city breaks. Our previous holiday clothes look knackered and DC have grown or completely changed taste in between.

I hope you get to buy a new swimsuit whenever you like now!

BauhausOfEliott · 06/03/2026 13:23

I don’t mean this in a bitchy way

Hate to break it to you, but you definitely do

Do you think OP is buying quality clothes before each holiday? Because I doubt she is.

If true I can't believe anyone would be so wasteful

If you have method to get sunscreen out of clothes please share! I have two lovely linen shirts ruined by sunscreen.

HortiGal · 06/03/2026 14:43

It’s MN where you wear the same clothes for 20 yrs or you’re wasteful!
I do have holiday items I rewear but I do buy quite a bit new each year as I like new trends etc , we do go away quite often, you’re allowed to treat yourself.

I really hate hyperbole.

No one said anyone has to wear things for 20 years. If you have DC how would that even work? Dont be silly.

The OP was talking about buying a whole new wardrobe for every single holiday. That is completely wasteful. If things you wore on your last holiday still fit then most people just top up - ie replace things that have been outgrown / are not suitable for that location / buy 1 or 2 items maybe for a special occasion (dinner / outing) but not a new wardrobe for the whole family for a 1-2 week break.

Only to dump it all in charity shops afterwards. 🙄🙄.

Yes, generally prefer to buy fewer better quality clothes that last years.

Currently wearing a cotton skirt from Other Stories that I bought in 2020 for maybe £50? Nothing crazy, but it’s great quality (as Other Stories used to be…). Must have worn it at least 50 times.

Orangejuiceisgood · 06/03/2026 15:01

This thread is wild.

Those that do buy ‘holiday clothes’, Do you wear everything once and once only? Or would you wear the same items for two evenings?

Whatkindoffuckeryisthiss · 06/03/2026 14:46

Which is mainly made of horrible man made fibres which dont keep you at all cool in the summer and make you sweat- the worse to wear in summer

ChocolateCinderToffee · 06/03/2026 15:02

Goodness you must have money to burn! I might save new clothes for a holiday but that’s all.
