Do you buy everyone new?

Hi all,

Im curious!

When going away more so with children and partners, do you buy yourselves all new outfits?

How many day outfits do you buy like swimwear and cover ups. How many evening outfits?

I know some people like to take previous outfits away but I love the feeling of putting new on when away. Feels like a nice treat. However doesn't feel so great panicking has everyone got enough with the endless lists and calculating it all. I don't put things in catalogue or credit cards though. Just curious as to what others do and spend, ends up a dear do when you include spending money, holiday cost etc 🤦🏼‍♀️

Absolutely not. I’ve got two pairs of trousers I wear on winter holidays which are 15 years old (I know cos I bought them for a specific event) so they probably get washed twice a year. They are still like new and fit so why on earth would I buy more. Same with holiday tops. If something shows signs of wear then I’ll replace. We both wear quite specific stuff on holiday and would rarely wear the same stuff at home, the only problem is all our holiday photos have the same clothes on!

BubbleFree · 06/03/2026 14:04

I don’t replace a full wardrobe as we travel a lot but yes I buy quite a lot of quality clothes a year for holidays when I add them up. We do different types of holidays for example I wouldn’t wear the same in Thailand that I’d wear on a cruise as I’d need outfits for dinner. I have an entirely different wardrobe for visiting the ILs and some other countries. We have a large extended family so there’s always someone happy to snap up clothes we no longer want. I don’t get loads of use out of most of my holiday clothes, we’re lucky to get a few weeks of sunshine a year where we live.

Yes I buy new everything for all of us and then when we leave the holiday I throw everything away and just come home with hand luggage.

It makes travelling so simple & easy, especially with children.

Surely this is a joke post?

InMyOpenOnion · 06/03/2026 14:05

I don't get what it is you need to buy that you wouldn't also wear in the UK summer? Barring a couple of beach cover ups, anything I would wear on a European summer holiday, I would also wear at home. The only time I buy holiday-specific things is if we're doing a snow or activity holiday that needs particular clothing.

Tell me you live in a different tax bracket without telling me that you live in a different tax bracket.

Not necessarily in the way you think though! Screams “working class with something to prove” to me.

Not a criticism at all, I have family who do this, along with the overdressed designer babies. It’s about proving you can afford nice things. I tend to buy quality things that will last, and use them until they wear out, but that is just a different approach to achieving the same goal, my definition of “nice things” is just different to theirs.

Just thinking about this a bit more… for people who do this, do you/your kids never think ‘oh I wish I still had that nice dress/pair of shorts/top from last year’s holiday’? My kids tend to choose their clothes carefully and really like them, and are often disappointed when a favourite outfit no longer fits (and will try and keep wearing it anyway!). I don’t think they’d like to have their entire wardrobe replaced so regularly, as they like their stuff.

Yeah 😂 me and my sister had a hand me down swimsuit as kids that we’d fight over for years and was probably eventually see through!

Swissmeringue · 06/03/2026 14:06

No, I buy DH and I new stuff as and when we need it. I don't really dress differently on holiday to when I'm at home in the summer so don't need separate clothes. The kids get new stuff as they grow out of it but if we are travelling into a different season then I'll try to make their existing stuff work. So we went to St Lucia at October half term, but their clothes were mostly their clothes from the previous summer. Likewise were going to California at Easter, so I've just bought their summer clothes for the upcoming summer slightly earlier than I usually would. We go on holiday 3/4 times a year so it would be a bit ridiculous to get them new clothes every time!

GoldenCupsatHarvestTime · 06/03/2026 14:07

No. I can’t afford that. I might buy a bikini.

The grammar surrounding the word ‘new’ in this post is something I’ve never come across which is interesting. Are people using ‘new’ as a noun from a particular area?

LittleGreenDuck · 06/03/2026 14:07

I buy a new multi pack of pants, does that count? I’d be buying them anyway but time it so that they’re new for holiday. That’s the level of excitement in my life.

Most of my summer clothes I’ve had for years, they don’t get as much wear as winter stuff.

If it’s not a summery beach holiday, which many of ours aren’t, I wear normal clothes.

Eridian123 · 06/03/2026 14:07

Unpaidviewer · 06/03/2026 13:53

What are you wearing on holiday? Surely you just layer them? We visit family in Asia. Its humid as well as hot. 35 degrees last time we went. I wear my normal summer clothes. Everyone in Hong Kong, Japan and Korea wears normal summer clothes.

My normal summer clothes are jeans. I literally never wear anything except jeans in this cold part of the UK in summer. On a super hot day I might wear slightly cropped jeans. I would never wear dresses, linen trousers, or shorts at home. Ever. Also, I would never wear jeans in a hot country, that would be crazy... so I definitely do have "holiday only clothes".

I don't go abroad every year. So if it has been 3 years since last time, I do end up buying quite a few new bits (usually from vinted/ebay - as stated, this is not an area for wardrobe investment for me).

Similarly for the kids - they would never wear shorts in the UK, but need to wear shorts on a sunny holiday. So, if I am going away, they need holiday clothes! I don't think I am wasteful with clothes, it is just practicalities.

Rosecoffeecup · 06/03/2026 14:08

Fucking hell what a waste of money and resources. No wonder the planet is fucked.

passmeaglass · 06/03/2026 14:08

I’m the opposite no way I would buy new each time. I get a buzz out of still being able to wear clothes that fitted me 5 yrs ago! Things only get replaced when they’ve worn out which for holiday items is every few years

GoldenRolo · 06/03/2026 14:08

For me it's seems wasteful and unnecessary. I may get new sandals, or top up any items needed, but it would never cross my mind to get whole new outfits. My DP and I still have clothes from when we started dating 9 years ago.

LittleGreenDuck · 06/03/2026 14:09

RattleAndHump · 06/03/2026 12:11

No. We go skiing quite often. The ski kit gets dragged out and we work out what fits who, then I top up from borrowing/charity shops/ vinted as required.

If we go away in the summer I just check the expected weather conditions, and see what we have. If they need something new I will get it. It’s usually T shirts and shorts, so they get used anyway.

Same re the skiwear, the youngest child ends up in a right mish mash of outfits. Luckily he couldn’t give a hoot.

Shorts!

I have lots of clothes that I tend to only wear on holiday, because even in summer it’s usually too cold to wear them in the UK. I keep them for years though because I only wear them once or twice a year. I probably buy only one or two new items for every holiday. When we come home from holiday in September it goes into a case and gets put in the loft until June.

BigSkies2022 · 06/03/2026 14:10

Nope. Unless something actually needs replacing, like sandals or swimwear. I prefer the feeling of knowing what I already have is just perfect, thank you very much.

FancyCatSlave · 06/03/2026 14:11

Absolutely not. I’ll buy new if there’s things I need but never just for a holiday.

The only exception is new pants, I will often pack brand new knickers. I don’t know why, but that’s only a few £

Eufyon · 06/03/2026 14:11

I imagine with the popularity of WLI, lots of people will be buying all new summer 2026 wardrobes!

CopeNorth · 06/03/2026 14:12

MrsMoastyToasty · 06/03/2026 13:30

As a child I was the only one who got new clothes because I was the eldest of 3 girls. My sisters got my hand me downs.

I was the middle. My mum always said “it’s new to you”! 😂

Hahahaha This reminds me of my mum who always buys herself new pants to wear at Christmas 😂 x

dubbie · 06/03/2026 14:16

Absolutely not. I buy good clothes that will last a long time.

Everybodys · 06/03/2026 14:17

The whole need new to go on holiday thing has never computed with me.

I will review clothes ahead of time and make sure everyone has enough of what's needed. This is obviously easier for me and DH than for the DC, and we both keep some hot weather clothes that get limited use in the UK. We pass clothes around in the family and I often buy second hand anyway, so new stuff for the kids is a mixture of preloved and shop bought. I'm also not particularly interested in looking a certain way on holiday anyway.

Sunshin80 · 06/03/2026 12:14

Blimey didnt think a post would cause such a stir. 🤣 I personally do like to buy new too. Tend to go away abroad every other year so obviously the children do need new. Myself I like to buy new as previous stuff id of donated to charity including the childrens outgrown items, so not really that wasteful. I cant stand having to store stuff

"Blimey didnt think a post would cause such a stir. "

Oh, I think you did.

ImImmortalNowBabyDoll · 06/03/2026 14:19

I would only usually buy all new if we needed clothes we wouldn't normally wear. We went to Lapland at Christmas and I bought a lot because we didn't have clothes suitable for those temperatures. If we went again, we'd just use the same stuff except for my daughter who would have grown.

For a summer holiday, we might get a few new things but usually would just wear our normal summer clothes.

ainsleysanob · 06/03/2026 14:20

No, I might buy one or two new things dependent on type of holiday but we go away abroad 3 or 4 times a year so it’d be ridiculous to buy new!
