Do you buy everyone new?

Hi all,

Im curious!

When going away more so with children and partners, do you buy yourselves all new outfits?

How many day outfits do you buy like swimwear and cover ups. How many evening outfits?

I know some people like to take previous outfits away but I love the feeling of putting new on when away. Feels like a nice treat. However doesn't feel so great panicking has everyone got enough with the endless lists and calculating it all. I don't put things in catalogue or credit cards though. Just curious as to what others do and spend, ends up a dear do when you include spending money, holiday cost etc 🤦🏼‍♀️

Are you serious? God I really hope you don't actually put stuff in the bin if so as that's actually immoral.

It’s a joke.

Bramblecrumb · 06/03/2026 13:49

I am totally baffled by this! I've never considered having to buy new clothes for my holiday. If anything, I love having fewer clothes and I'm v keen to save as much money as possible each month 😂

GoldGold · 06/03/2026 13:49

I don’t mean to be rude but is this inspired by influencers and having instagram worthy photos? 🫣

Marwoodsbigbreak · 06/03/2026 13:49

I can’t believe this. It’s shockingly wasteful. You just get rid of your existing summer clothes to the charity shop/landfill and buy new stuff? At least once a year?

You really can’t think of a better way to spend your money? Do you impulse buy things you don’t really like much so you are happy to just get rid of it? I can’t understand why anyone would do this really, unless they were repeatedly gaining weight year on year, so nothing fit any more.

Were you unaware that most people just buy a few things each season to update and refresh, or replace anything damaged or stained, rather than multiple new outfits for everyone.

Lol no! No-one is going to know your clothes/outfits are new! 😆

Personally I would be never be able to wear 90% of my summer holiday clothes in the UK. Not sure why people are being obtuse about this aspect. The average summer temp where I am is about 18 degrees with cool mornings and evenings, that’s very very different from 30+ weather for a week.

I don't really have many summer specific clothes. I have a couple of pairs of shorts, one pair of linen trousers and one skirt that would only get worn when it's really hot. Everything else I wear pretty much year round. The same dresses just either on their own or with tights and jumpers if it's colder. Tops are the same, just worn under a jumper or without a jumper.

Have never needed to have storage for winter and summer wardrobes separately because I just don't have thst distinction.

What are you wearing on holiday? Surely you just layer them? We visit family in Asia. Its humid as well as hot. 35 degrees last time we went. I wear my normal summer clothes. Everyone in Hong Kong, Japan and Korea wears normal summer clothes.

Thatsillymama · 06/03/2026 13:54

I do a mix. There's outfits that I love but wouldn't wear at home so I bring them every year. Then il buy a few new bits aswell. I did really well in the January sales this year so I'm excited for my hols in April!

FunkyFringe · 06/03/2026 13:54

No way! I have a closet full of holiday clothes that don’t really get worn at home, so there’s no way that I would be buying a complete new wardrobe for every holiday. I might get a few new items, that’s all.

I wonder if the fad for buying everything new is down to social media and posting photos? Years ago, we would rewear wedding guest outfits but my daughters wouldn’t dream of doing that these days unless the weddings are far apart and involve a totally different group of guests,

Lulusept22 · 06/03/2026 13:54

This is horrific and I’ve never heard of it before. It is SO wasteful and the planet cannot handle this kind of behaviour. You’d be so much better off buying well made pieces and keeping them for years

Wellthisisdifficult · 06/03/2026 13:55

This is so out dated now and the sort of thing I associate with people of my parents generation (I’m late 40s).

Much more mindful, esp for the environment to keep using the same things you will most likely only lose for a couple of weeks each year. If something needs replacing, eg the material in a swim suit has gone then it gets replaced

It does depend on whereabouts you live - we had temperatures in the 30s for weeks here last summer, and if you are then getting on a crowded sticky tube train, you definitely want to dress lightly.

I’d wear similar clothes for an August work day in London as I would on a city break in Madrid. And similar clothes for a day on the beach in Margate as I would for a day on the beach in Brittany.

But obviously completely different clothes again if I lived in Aberdeen and it was 20C and raining.

momager22 · 06/03/2026 13:55

Absolutely not, that’s ridiculously wasteful. Replace things as and when needed and maybe buy the odd new item if something catches my eye (usually second hand)

AtIusvue · 06/03/2026 13:55

90% is clothing I bring out every summer, 10% something new.

ThiagoJones · 06/03/2026 13:56

Just thinking about this a bit more… for people who do this, do you/your kids never think ‘oh I wish I still had that nice dress/pair of shorts/top from last year’s holiday’? My kids tend to choose their clothes carefully and really like them, and are often disappointed when a favourite outfit no longer fits (and will try and keep wearing it anyway!). I don’t think they’d like to have their entire wardrobe replaced so regularly, as they like their stuff.

DappledThings · 06/03/2026 13:56

I'm the same age as you and at least half my parents' wardrobes are still older than me with absolutely mo distinction between home and holiday clothes.

Ineedanewsofa · 06/03/2026 13:56

The only time I’ve really ever done a big pre holiday clothes shop was before our honeymoon, neither of us had enough warm weather clothes to last for 2 1/2 weeks! We also got brand new luggage for it (which is falling apart 15 years later)
I do however, as per pp, use holiday as a catalyst to buy new underwear and chuck out anything that has gone tatty so I’m often in brand new pants on my hols 🤣
Also agree with hardly ever wearing holiday clothes in the UK, it’s never really warm enough apart from the odd day so my holiday clothes last for ages

Tell me you live in a different tax bracket without telling me that you live in a different tax bracket.

I rather suspect OP is at the opposite end of that spectrum. Their post reminded me of those horrible Daily Mail type stories of “mums on benefits who buy their children 100 presents each for Christmas “

Nobody well educated would do this surely?

VictoriaEra · 06/03/2026 13:58

MiddleAgedDread · 06/03/2026 12:00

no i don't, I often only wear my summer holiday clothes on their one week summer holiday a year so don't need new every time!

Me too.

Becs258 · 06/03/2026 13:59

The only time I’d do this is if we’re going somewhere where it’s difficult to wash clothes and I don’t have enough for the length of time we’re going, but that’s very rare.

I don’t, I would feel wasteful unless it is something that someone needs. I did buy some new things when we went on safari but did try Vinted first.

If it’s stressing you out why not focus on some good quality/classic things that last and go with other items, for you. I had an favourite pair of denim shorts I must have had more than 15 years and had to give up the ghost and admit they were too tight! 😂 Appreciate kids will grow out of stuff like swimmers etc that you might need to find.

Enjoy your holiday!

Sounds like you’re in a chilly part of the UK. In the past 5-10 years or so, very many regions of the UK have had at least some hot weather most years. It might only last a couple of weeks, but heatwaves are not uncommon at all now in large parts of the UK. I’m on the south coast and we typically get at least a few weeks of very hot weather most summers. So at home I wear the same shorts, vest tops and lightweight dresses that I take on my holidays abroad.

CopeNorth · 06/03/2026 14:02

RedVanYellowVan · 06/03/2026 12:33

We have never had the sort of holiday where we have needed to dress up. Camping, water sports, hill walking etc. Normal clothes for evenings etc.

So old clothes which don't matter if they get ruined, but everyone has safety gear in good condition, updated as necessary.

The DC might have had the occasional new t-shirt or hoody, most likely a souvenir one.

Sounds great! Can I come?

MrTwisterHasABlister · 06/03/2026 14:02

Nah. I’m not about that perfect picture, matching clothes, all brand new look.

And it’s such an awful awful waste, dreadful for the planet.
