Do you buy everyone new?

Hi all,

Im curious!

When going away more so with children and partners, do you buy yourselves all new outfits?

How many day outfits do you buy like swimwear and cover ups. How many evening outfits?

I know some people like to take previous outfits away but I love the feeling of putting new on when away. Feels like a nice treat. However doesn't feel so great panicking has everyone got enough with the endless lists and calculating it all. I don't put things in catalogue or credit cards though. Just curious as to what others do and spend, ends up a dear do when you include spending money, holiday cost etc 🤦🏼‍♀️

I was precious about how they looked all the time, not just holidays. Yes I was absolutely obsessed with it, BUT as children my mum always packed us 2 changes of clothes a day (one for day and one for night) and it just carried on. My sister also did it with her children.

My granddaughter has so many changes of clothes because both myself and my son has been buying her outfits separately for the holiday, (he’s not taking her, just me) I am not actually taking all of them but she will have 20 changes as I won’t be washing clothes, and she won’t be wearing dirty clothes, especially since she’s newly toilet trained and I can’t rely on getting quick access to public toilets while abroad.

we’re having a ‘fashion show’ tomorrow and we’re going to whittle the clothes down together and then pack her case. She’s very excited as it’s her first holiday and I’ve told her that she can have cake for breakfast and one drink of ‘tickle pop’ a day (fizzy drink which she’s not allowed as a rule).

its not like I’ve spent thousands, maybe £150 (including new trainers and sandals) and these clothes will see her throughout the spring and summer.

That must have been really hard for you, being so obsessed with their appearance all the time and not able to just enjoy their childhoods. I hope you’ve had some help and managed to relax more with your grandchildren 💐

I wasn’t aware this was a ‘thing’ . I had to read the title a few times.
wWho has time to buy 7,10,14 (a month?!) worth of clothes to have sun lotion, icecream and be hot and sweaty in?!
Never mind the planet, what we’re teaching our children about value, the planet etc etc.
Not meaning to be rude at all, but the expectation to do this is really high. I would reframe and maybe one new outfit each?

This is a great opportunity to break your own cycle and just pack a few items she can relax and enjoy her holiday in with nobody being neurotic about appearances.

I might buy a few new things for me, bikinis etc but not all new. My children grow so fast they have to have new clothes for the summer so yes most of their clothes are new but possibly worn that summer already.

Absolutely not! I couldn't afford that and wouldn't be so wasteful even if I could. I might buy 1 or 2 outfits but not all of them...that's ridiculous

OMG...how do you even have room in the house if you buy new every year???! Also I hate clothes shopping so unless I really need to replace something I tend to wear the same holiday clothes for a few years.....suits me just fine - less stressful, less cost and better for the environment so it's a win win

It would appear not

Yes I buy new everything for all of us and then when we leave the holiday I throw everything away and just come home with hand luggage.

It makes travelling so simple & easy, especially with children.

You actually throw it in the bin????? Please God tell me I've got this wrong

SplodgeWaddler · 07/03/2026 20:49

No, in fact my beach holiday clothes are some of the oldest I have.

Mental, unnecessary, wasteful, overly sself indulgent and bad for the planet :(

EvieBB · 07/03/2026 20:55

Miranda65 · 06/03/2026 12:10

No! Things like linen shirts and trousers don't get used that often, so they can be taken on holiday for years and years.

Absolutely!

I try to limit what I buy new, so for my last holiday I had a new pair of trainers. I bought some clothing and accessories on Vinted, but most of what I took I already owned. I am shocked at the extravagance, both in terms of money and resources, of buying all new clothes for a holiday.

Me too....shocked at the level of waste and self indulgencece let alone the drain on the planet's resources....it's very depressing

NoFiller · 07/03/2026 21:08

Of course everyone buys new clothes for each holiday.

Who would take clothes they’ve worn before? That’s common and disgusting.

What next: bathe in the same asses’ milk two nights in a row?

Sakura7 · 07/03/2026 21:09

God this thread is sad. How incredibly wasteful. Attitudes like the OP's are so damaging, just 'me me me' and no thought whatsoever to the impact on the environment. And no, dumping piles of 'old' clothes on the charity shop doesn't magically make it better.

Tedsnan1 · 07/03/2026 21:09

Seriously??!! The phrase 'more money than sense' springs to mind.

We may well be in the minority, im not asking you to pay for it. Im not racking up debt to pay for the things I buy new. I dont splurge during the year, I donate alot of things I dont wear. Realistically by the time I've dealt with children while abroad and theyve wiped what ever on somethings or sun lotion as stained a few things, most would need replacing anyway. Blimey im on about take probably 7/8 evening outfits for a 2 week holiday calm down

You said everything new for everyone. You've backpedalled a bit now.

Tedsnan1 · 07/03/2026 21:21

Shuffletoesxtreme · 06/03/2026 12:52

Say at £50 an outfit that's £200 per day for a family of four so £1400 for a week? Get another holiday for that.

More than that though. Kids get grubby and often need to change clothes each day, and many of us will change outfits for the evening, then there are swimsuits and towels. So much waste.

I buy a new DH and DC for every holiday. I throw them away when I get to the airport.

Genius post! 😅😅😅

If you have only spent £150, that suggests you are buying cheap, Shein and suchlike. So as well as the environmental impact, it's worth considering the human impact too of the production methods of such cheap clothes.

When my kids were small we had everything brand new. The kids had a minimum of 30 full changes of clothes for a 14 night holiday. (I was very precious about how they looked and dressed).

I’m taking my 2yo granddaughter away soon and so far she has got 38 full outfits for a 10 night holiday 🤣 I’ve got nothing new at all but I went to Florida for 3 weeks in September and had everything new then so I’m being sensible.

Why?? What is the need for everything to be brand new? This level of consumerism shocks me .
