Do you buy everyone new?

Hi all,

Im curious!

When going away more so with children and partners, do you buy yourselves all new outfits?

How many day outfits do you buy like swimwear and cover ups. How many evening outfits?

I know some people like to take previous outfits away but I love the feeling of putting new on when away. Feels like a nice treat. However doesn't feel so great panicking has everyone got enough with the endless lists and calculating it all. I don't put things in catalogue or credit cards though. Just curious as to what others do and spend, ends up a dear do when you include spending money, holiday cost etc 🤦🏼‍♀️

It had honestly never occurred to me that people might buy all new clothes for a holiday. We just take our usual clothes, maybe 1 or 2 new t-shirts or tops each, if new ones were needed anyway. We live by the beach thiugh in a holiday destination so we wear shorts and tees / tops with flip flops all summer. Last year we went to the Caribbean for 2 weeks in august and I bought 2 new passenger tops for me, 2 Quiksilver t-shirts from Vinted for my 12 year old, and 3 find hand pairs of boardies to share between my 12 & 14 year olds (same sized waist). That was all we needed - we only took 5 sets of clothes each though as we were staying in a villa with a maid and laundry room, so we could travel light. I always book a villa with a washing machine as it’s so nice not to have to pack/ unpack loads of clothes.

I think alot of people have got the wrong end of the stick here, It wasnt a post to be unkind to people who dont buy new everytime they go away. I think you really need to re read my previous replies to people. Like I've said before I dont go away oftern. Every other year maybe. I dont splurge during the year. I dont go out very often and if I do its only somewhere simple nothing fancy as thats not me. My homelife dictates alot of what I can and cant do socially due to one disabled child who takes up alot of my time. So bloody excuse me if every other year I re buy probably 7/8 nice evening dresses and a few nice bikinis for myself and re kit out my children and donate alot of previous years things, its the one of few times I can actually get dressed up in something nice and feel abit more me, rather than having to be in leggings and a hoodie/t-shirt dealing with a child with severe medical needs and wiping a 10 year olds dribble off the front of his tops. Im not stick up my own arse in anyway shape or form. To be it just feels a nice treat to get a few nice new bits on the holiday weve saved for. I dont do credit cards, I dont do loans for the holiday, spends or clothes. Seems im in the minority and to be honest I kind of like it that way 😊. Not everyones going to agree but wow some people are rude. Im not judging people for buying second hand in anyway good for them. I personally prefer not to. You guys do you.

Edited

You don't think your post about Vinted was judgey and rude?

I have a bunch of clothes that I only wear when I'm on holiday for a week twice a year. I return from my holiday, wash the clothes, pack them straight back in my suitcase ready for my next holiday. I have shoes/sandals that only get worn on holiday too. Every now and then I'll buy a new bikini, not because I need a new one, just because I really like pretty bikinis.

The irony is… @RobinEllacotStrike is constantly all over mumsnet waxing lyrical about what an incredible budgeter she is

She's deluded in that case 🤦🏻‍♀️
It's unbelievable.....

Many years ago, a young woman I knew was getting married. Their wedding cost £30K ‘because she wanted everything perfect’ - they were living with her family because they couldn’t afford their own place.
She also bought a new wardrobe of clothes for a holiday, and wouldn’t book a holiday if she couldn’t afford the new clothes as well. First time I’d come across that, and now this thread.

If you have only spent £150, that suggests you are buying cheap, Shein and suchlike. So as well as the environmental impact, it's worth considering the human impact too of the production methods of such cheap clothes.

not only that but shein don't comply with children clothes production rules and laws so made with chemicals etc that are very dangerous. so the beloved grandchild is breathing in this chemicals aswell touching her skin. might as well be covered in petrol

It’s ‘unbelievable’ because it isn’t true, as that poster confirmed long ago.
I get that it’s a long thread, but it’s probably best to read it all before wasting your time going off on outraged tangents about something that was a joke.

DoesItEverGetEasier · 08/03/2026 08:25

Bit of both, there is usually a large proportion of new clothes for a holiday but as others have said, with UK weather some summer clothes don’t get worn often here so if I still love something I already have I will take it. I do work out an outfit for every night though and holiday shopping is a big exciting part of the holiday for us!

I bet @RobinEllacotStrike thought her post was so off-the-wall that everybody would immediately twig it was a joke, it was early on in the thread and so it was obvious to me she was being sarcastic. But to be fair to later arrivals to the thread, her post is not that far off from some more recent posts by people who are being completely serious, so it's not completely unbelievable!

MNHQ, we need a sarcasm font, please!

Blue44Lady · 08/03/2026 08:41

I rarely buy anything new and travel with only a small suitcase. It must cost you a fortune!

Phoenixfire1988 · 08/03/2026 09:08

Yes I buy new last years summer clothes no longer fit them anyway and they get worn when we come back .

What if, say, you’re going on holiday in August but you have hot weather in May/June/July… what would they wear then, if last year’s stuff is too small?
I buy new summer clothes for the kids if they need them because they’ve grown, at the beginning of the summer (when they need them). However they’d wear these before we go on holiday and after, so they’re not new for the holiday.

As I go to a different country every year no one knows what I wore last year, the grandchildren will get new outfits but I’ll get them from vinted. But for some reason I love new underwear for holidays.

RampantIvy · 08/03/2026 13:09

As I go to a different country every year no one knows what I wore last year,

This is why I don't understand why people need to buy new every year. No-one will know what you wore in previous years.

The person who has bought 38 new outfits and several pairs of shoes for under £150 (for a ten day break) will probably end up chucking them in the bin before she gets home, because it’s unlikely a full outfit costing under £3 will stand up to being washed and reworn.

😁

Don't do Instagram.
I also don't put pictures of myself on social media. It's more likely to be a picture of a mountain or a sea view.

I'm so boring.

Nowpause · 08/03/2026 15:13

I remember reading on one those AMA threads… that travellers do this. It’s about presenting an image to the outside world and fellow travellers that you can afford to buy new.

Would anyone else even notice they’re new though? I don’t think I’d even notice if someone was wearing new clothes, unless they’d forgot to cut the price label off.

So? They can do one.

Honestly why do people allow themselves to be cowed by what strangers might think? Bonkers.

You could save on baggage charges and shopping and the environment by having fewer changes of clothes.
One of my searches for local facilities always includes the location of a self service launderette. Part of local culture!

I know

but there are a lot of…. Interesting traditions in the travelling community and the need and desire for NEW is one of them
