Do you buy everyone new?

Hi all,

Im curious!

When going away more so with children and partners, do you buy yourselves all new outfits?

How many day outfits do you buy like swimwear and cover ups. How many evening outfits?

I know some people like to take previous outfits away but I love the feeling of putting new on when away. Feels like a nice treat. However doesn't feel so great panicking has everyone got enough with the endless lists and calculating it all. I don't put things in catalogue or credit cards though. Just curious as to what others do and spend, ends up a dear do when you include spending money, holiday cost etc 🤦🏼‍♀️

We buy what we need. If our son has grown (he usually has), we buy bigger clothes. Those clothes aren't just for holidays though- he wears shorts and tshirts all year! I might need a few new tops, hubby might need some new shorts. We would never buy cases full of clothes and then never wear them again.

butternut123 · 07/03/2026 05:55

Y kids are young and outgrow their clothes so I get theirs off Vinted in the winter and save them for our holiday. We go away early summer so then they die these for the rest of the year.

for myself, I go through my holiday wardrobe and reuse most. I might get a couple of pieces, new swimwear, sandals etc but mostly rewear. I have lost weight in the last year though and gone down a dress size so I’ll need a try on of my clothes to check they still fit.

Ferro · 07/03/2026 07:36

When I go away I like to wear clothes that are tried and tested, that I know are comfortable and suit me. Being on holiday is the worst time to discover that your new shoes hurt or your trousers ride up when you walk.

DevonMum123 · 07/03/2026 07:51

This must be wind up surely.
We go away 4-5 times a year. Of course we don't buy brand new outfits for everyone. That's ridiculous. I buy new swimwear if old one is bubbly or stretched. Buy new (to us)clothes when need to, not for holiday. Poor planet. I use Vinted for kids as they are obviously growing fast. That's it.
Are you going on first holiday in years or something?

Newusername3kidss · 07/03/2026 08:06

What an utterly bizarre concept. We are well off and go away 3/4 times a year and yes I might buy myself a new dress if I see one i like but the majority of my “holiday clothes” ive had for years. Some expensive items, some cheaper but until they don’t fit me / get ruined somehow I wear them. Same with kids. 2nd / 3rd child on his hand me downs from their brother. Again new swimwear maybe and a few t shirts but that’s it. As soon as we get home it gets washed and stored in suitcases for when we go away again so don’t need to find storage. So bizarrely wasteful. We spend a lot of money on holidays but are careful in rest of our lives which we why we can afford it. I’d rather spend money on a new expensive coat which I’ll use constantly rather than a beach coverup that you’ll only use once.

Keffert · 07/03/2026 08:13

Absolutely not but I do know it’s a thing since I was chatting to some mums in the playground a few years ago and lamenting how hard it was to make sure everything was washed and dried in time to pack and the both looked at me like I was bananas and said they buy new for holidays and pack it straight into the cases.

We just wear our normal clothes although I do have a couple of sundresses that are really only holiday dresses because it’s usually too cold here (and we don’t tend to go out for dinner when at home). I might buy something new if I wanted it but mostly just take my existing clothes.

I use my holiday as the time to refresh my underwear - I buy enough new pants for the whole thing and throw out a corresponding number of old, shabby ones. Other than that, I might buy a couple of new summer dresses but not a whole new wardrobe, I like to have some trusty old favourites in my case that I know I will feel comfortable and look nice in.

I go on holiday with DH and I certainly wouldn't think of buying him new clothes, he can sort himself out! My involvement is limited to nagging him every day in the run up to start his packing, in the vain hope he won't leave it until the morning we go, and then at one mile intervals along the motorway, announce various things he has forgotten to put in 😆

I know someone who doesn’t like the idea of bringing dirty pants home in case her suitcase gets searched so she takes her oldest pants away with her and throws them in the bin once worn!

but but what if they are hit by a car and the doctors see their old pants then? Foreign doctors?? 😂

TheGrimSmile · 07/03/2026 08:31

I have a holiday suitcase under my bed and I take the same basics year after year. Ive got a dress in there that's 20 years old. Obviously when the kids were younger they might have needed new eg swimwear/ shorts because they were growing. Id find it very wasteful and unnecessary to buy new stuff all the time.

CortieTat · 07/03/2026 08:34

I hope it is a wind up, I just wear my summer clothes on holiday.

When it comes to functional things like skiing/snowboarding clothes, hiking trousers or swimwear I buy the best I can afford and then use them for years. My snowboarding jacket is from 2008. The style of the season was baggy and loose streetwear back then and nearly 20 years later it’s still baggy and loose streetwear. The same with swimsuits - I have a functional one, from Speedo that is made for swimming and a classic bikini, Freya Supernova. It’s over 20 years old.

binnibonnieboo · 07/03/2026 09:02

I sometimes use a holiday as an excuse to treat myself to a new item of clothing, maybe a dress or something. But not every holiday.

sharkstale · 07/03/2026 09:22

I like to buy us new stuff. Makes sense with the kids anyway as they usually need new sizes anyway

HeidiLite · 07/03/2026 09:35

obviously if people have changed sizes and clothes no longer fit, you need new ones. But otherwise? I would have a mountain of clothes if I bought myself a full new wardrobe for each holiday when there's nothing wrong with clothes i wore for the previous one.

dizzydizzydizzy · 07/03/2026 09:40

Not as a matter of principle. Last time I went away I bought a couple of new pairs of lightweight shorts because I was going to a hot and humid country and the ones I had were looking tatty.

But just not for your next holiday?

God no, will be new again

Eufyon · 07/03/2026 11:02

This is very usual to do this in the travelling community, just like massive OTT weddings and 16th parties.

But how is mentioning weddings and 16th parties any relevance to this thread?

I would prefer not to go if I couldnt do it. I wouldn't do it for a short break in the UK

if it's true, that's actually really sad.

Not the UK bit, I don't count breaks in the UK as a real holiday, but not considering actual holidays until you buy new stuff? It's sad.

why? it's a big world out there, I live in the UK, I can go anywhere anytime I want. Not really a holiday.

Because there's loads of brilliant parts of the UK to visit to and if you downgrade any trips within your own country as not a real holiday it's sad to not allow yourself to enjoy things closer to home as much as abroad.

The last places I've been away are Spain, Malta, the New Forest and Sherwood Forest. Next places will be China, southern France and Hastings. They are all holidays and enjoyable in different ways.
