Do you buy everyone new?

Hi all,

Im curious!

When going away more so with children and partners, do you buy yourselves all new outfits?

How many day outfits do you buy like swimwear and cover ups. How many evening outfits?

I know some people like to take previous outfits away but I love the feeling of putting new on when away. Feels like a nice treat. However doesn't feel so great panicking has everyone got enough with the endless lists and calculating it all. I don't put things in catalogue or credit cards though. Just curious as to what others do and spend, ends up a dear do when you include spending money, holiday cost etc 🤦🏼‍♀️

But how is mentioning weddings and 16th parties any relevance to this thread?

Because it is a similar frame of mind…. New new new! Big, flashy, new!!!

Eufyon · 07/03/2026 14:04

If the OP would prefer not to go if she could t afford all new holiday clothes, then I can’t get my head around how crap her holidays must be!!

beautifuldaytosavelives · 07/03/2026 14:19

Come on now OP, you know that having anything nice for yourself is wasteful and you must get a minimum 20 years wear out of each item.

I buy some new things, take things that have been on holiday before and some stuff that gets worn in between. What I think is bizarre is the packed away holiday wardrobe that gets used every year. Are there no opportunities to wear those things at home? Do they not show their age?

So no, OP, we do not have every item new for each holiday, but largely due to affordability and a few well-loved bits, but would I do it? Certainly. Enjoy your holiday.

why? it's a big world out there, I live in the UK, I can go anywhere anytime I want. Not really a holiday.

Why?

Is it only a holiday when you can sit in hot sun all day?

I love holidaying in the UK as well as abroad. We had a fabulous holiday in a very sunny Scotland last year.

I don’t count staying somewhere in the uk as a real holiday too.

sanityisamyth · 07/03/2026 15:29

What an utter waste of money and a massive cost to the environment.

Nochoiceofuser · 07/03/2026 15:29

For holidays (or everyday) I try to only buy what I need (sometimes impulse buy if it's something really nice) and I tend to check out charity shops or Vinted before buying new, a quick wash before wearing and they're fine. While it's nice to buy lots of new stuff for holidays it can get expensive and usually unnecessary, save the money for nice meals out or activities once you're there.

mynameiscalypso · 06/03/2026 12:24

My DH has a small stack of ‘holiday clothes’ which he just picks up and puts in the suitcase when we go away. These clothes have not changed in at least 10 years.

My Hubby has a section in his wardrobe that are usually only worn on holiday 😄

MrsMoastyToasty · 06/03/2026 13:30

As a child I was the only one who got new clothes because I was the eldest of 3 girls. My sisters got my hand me downs.

I'm also the oldest of three girls and mist of my clothes were hand me downs from other families my parents knew so my sisters got hand me downs on their 3rd or 4th 'regeneration' 😆

WhineAndWine1 · 07/03/2026 16:20

I get new holiday clothes every year - Two out fits a day and 3 new swim wear. My day stuff will be the stuff I wear here or another hot holiday but the night stuff tends only to be for holidays as it’s simple not warm enough here. I might buy a few new bits for a trip within the UK but I don’t case that was a real holiday. Also to the person who claimed to have a fantastic holiday in Scotland and it been very sunny. I doubt it was very warm i stay here all year round and it’s never warm enough to get to your bones like it does abroad.

ps I also buy a lot if it from Shein (the horror)

I agree. Can you imagine telling your children you won’t be taking them on holiday this year. Not because you can’t afford it, but because you can’t afford to buy completely new clothes for everyone in the family to wear on the holiday?

It really sounds insane.

Or that you are taking them away but it doesn't count as a holiday because you haven't got on a plane. Such a horrible way to live.

Perhaps they’d breathe a sigh of relief. The holidays must be crap if the op would cancel if couldn’t have new clothes!

I didn't go to Scotland to sunbathe, so the sunny weather was a bonus.

I love hot weather, but would get bored if all I did was lie on a sunbed all day with the odd dip in the pool.

Do you realise how utterly spoilt you sound. Lots of people can't afford any kind of holiday and here you are dismissing the UK.

ThiagoJones · 07/03/2026 16:47

We holiday abroad every year, but we also holiday in the UK. I very much consider it a holiday. New area to explore, we always choose lovely accommodation, no work or housework, dedicated family time, good food, good wine… why wouldn’t it be a holiday?

It’ll be something that probably has just been passed down through generations. Anything not new is crap. Any holiday that isnt abroad isn’t a proper holiday etc etc. Their children will grow up with same mentality and so the cycle continues

Thecows · 07/03/2026 17:17

It's up to you what you spend your money on I'd never judge for that, it's the environmental impact that is so thoughtless. You think you are so generous and thoughtful donating all your old clothes to charity but can't see what a massive problem textile disposal is globally?

Nanny0gg · 07/03/2026 17:28

Sunshin80 · 06/03/2026 19:04

Haha well im 45 so not very young at all. Two children 10 and 7. Not a sheltered life at all, I deal with a lot at home and do not splurge during other months so the one holiday a year I very much like to treat myself. The kids clothes will see them then through the following years warmer months until we next go the year after that. Bare in mind we dont go every year so not extremely wasteful. Anything that can be donated to charity would be. Myself if I see something I like I will get it. I rarely go out with friends, spend money elsewhere so I dont see the issue. 😊

So why have you posted?

You clearly don't GAF

BrendaSmall · 07/03/2026 18:16

I only really wear shorts and t shirts in the summer at home and a few strapless dresses for in the garden sunbathing, abroad I wear strappy dresses and strapless dresses, also strapless tankinis, I’ve had the same “ holiday clothes “ for many years and we go abroad 4/5 times a year. Since last year I’ve gone from a size 24/26 to a size 12/14, so everything needs to be replaced, I’ve started to get a lot of items from Vinted and I’m selling my old stuff on there. I take 2 tankini tops and bottoms with me, 2 cardigans & 4/5 dresses , what I wear on the plane I don’t wear whilst I’m away and it’s ready to wear when I’m flying home. I take 1 pair of slippers, 1 pair of sandals and 1 pair of flip flops and I travel in crocs due to swelling from the flight this is for a week and if I get my clothes messy I wash them in the sink!!

JLou08 · 07/03/2026 18:32

I'll just buy what's needed, which can sometimes be quite a lot for youngest DC as he's 5 so he outgrows things quickly. I remember doing holiday clothes shopping when I was younger. I have a very different attitude to clothing now, if I'm buying clothes I want to get plenty of wear out of them and I don't like having excess clothing that I need to sort through to make room for new ones. When I was younger I'd buy things just because I liked the look of it and some of them would never even get worn, now I only buy it if I need it.

DibDob22 · 07/03/2026 18:51

I buy everyone new underwear and leave it at home. Take the older ones and bin them each day. I can't bear the thought of bringing dirty pants and knickers home again.

SilverVixen101 · 07/03/2026 19:03

Never - this sounds wasteful and bonkers tbh. I do often buy something where I go on holiday too though - as a memento. Like a nice hat or top in a local boutique.

How dirty does your underwear get?!

Dragonflytamer · 07/03/2026 19:06

I didn't even know this was thing. When we go away we just pack some stuff from the wardrobe

Is this the Instagram generation that does this?
