Do you buy everyone new?

Hi all,

Im curious!

When going away more so with children and partners, do you buy yourselves all new outfits?

How many day outfits do you buy like swimwear and cover ups. How many evening outfits?

I know some people like to take previous outfits away but I love the feeling of putting new on when away. Feels like a nice treat. However doesn't feel so great panicking has everyone got enough with the endless lists and calculating it all. I don't put things in catalogue or credit cards though. Just curious as to what others do and spend, ends up a dear do when you include spending money, holiday cost etc 🤦🏼‍♀️

I love when people say buy on vinted.. no thanks! I don't fancy wearing something that sweaty Sandra's been wearing on her holibobs last year scratching her sweaty arse on for 2 weeks. Then when she decides to send it wraps it in a old bread wrapper

You sound thoroughly unpleasant and ignorant.

Do you enjoy your holidays @Sunshin80 ? Just you and your children?

Very much so, some much needed time together as a family.

How so?

Most would be unhappy with a partner that forces them to have a dna test to prove their 3 year old is actually theirs and not that their partner of a decade is a chat

Eufyon · 06/03/2026 19:46

How much would you spend on a “nice evening dress”?

keepswimming38 · 06/03/2026 19:57

I buy the odd new thing. This time especially as I’m on epic so nothing fits. However I’ve still got holiday clothes I bought 20 years ago and wear.

HeddaGarbled · 06/03/2026 20:01

I would prefer not to go if I couldnt do it

Well that’s …… unusual.

So, the new clothes (including for spouse and children) are more important than the holiday?

Do your spouse and children know you’d rather you all have new clothes than enjoy family holidays?

stayathomegardener · 06/03/2026 20:02

Good Lord! Some of my absolute favourite holiday clothes are over 20 years old and so irreplaceable I only have them in hand luggage. V

Doteycat · 06/03/2026 20:21

I swim every day 2 or 3 times a day on hols.
I bring about 5 swimsuits. I love a new one.
I cant remember the last time i boight a bikini though. They are shite for swimming in.
I couldnt cope with just one pair of togs.

Just a couple in rotation (one on, one washed and hanging to dry) have always been fine for my many beach holidays, often in Barbados.

Just out of interest, would you feel embarrassed to be seen in the same one 3 times in a week? Or be worried that people might think you can’t afford a whole selection?

Because I really do have to wonder…

No not at all. I just really like looking nice, and I see lots of swimming costumes I like and would like to wear! I don’t think other people’s perception of me or what I’m wearing even enters my mind to be honest.

Hotandpointy · 06/03/2026 20:37

Ok, I really want to go away now! It’s been 11 years, not sure anything holidaying would fit me now!

Sunshin80 · 06/03/2026 19:34

I dont think that at all. Me personally I wouldnt want to buy second hand clothes. Im not judging in anyway someone that does each to their own just like what I do. You seem a little judgemental to be honest. It wasnt a post to be unkind to people who dont buy new everytime they go away. I think you really need to re read my previous replies to people. Like I've said before I dont go away oftern. Everyother year maybe. I dont splurge during the year. I dont go out very oftern and if I do its only somewhere simple nothing fancy as thats not me. My homelife dictates alot of what I can and cant do socially due to one disabled child who takes up alot of my time. So bloody excuse me if every other year I re buy probably 7/8 nice evening dresses and a few nice bikinis for myself and re kit out my children and donate alot of previous years things.

If you arent posting to be unkind why mention "sweaty second hand". Seems pretty unkind to me

Flippin' heck, I didnt know my mum was on mumsnet!!

This is the nonsense she would say, always bothering what strangers who she doesnt know and will never see again might think!
Why would anyone even care that Billy Randomer may ( or may not) think you can’t afford 'a whole selection'
Utter bullshit vanity nonsense!

Sunshin80 · 06/03/2026 19:27

If people want to risk it buying from a charity shop or vinted im not stopping them. Me personally I wouldn't.

Why... doesn't your washing machine clean your clothes?

IsThistheMiddleofNowhere · 06/03/2026 21:19

No I don't. My holiday clothes are generally not the clothes I wear at home so as they are only worn once or twice a year it would be really wasteful to change them every year. I do tend to buy a new bikini top each year though, mainly because my boob's keep getting bigger!

RampantIvy · 06/03/2026 21:31

Who on earth "curates" a holiday outfit? It isn't a fashion shoot. I am not a scruff and wear outfits that look put together, but I don't "curate" them. That sounds so pretentious.

I tend not to buy high fashion so my summer clothes last for several summers as they don't look terribly dated and get so little wear. My last two bikinis lasted for over 10 years. I bought my last two swimsuits a couple of years ago and also expect them to last for years.

TeamGeriatric · 06/03/2026 21:55

Nothing new at all generally and we rarely stay in one place on holiday, so we pack light too which means we don't take a clean outfit for each day.

Dalsern · 06/03/2026 22:19

I've never bought holiday clothes or clothes specifically for a holiday, except for sports/active wear for activity holidays but that was mostly pre-dcs. They just wear things like t-shirts which are part of their normal wardrobes and which they'd wear in summer (or in winter as a layer). We tend to get given hand me downs and I pick up deals for the next size up in the sales, so I don't normally need to buy at full price just before a holiday even if the dcs have outgrown last year's clothes.
I wear my normal clothes on holiday, we tend to go to places with a similar climate (northern Europe) as the heat can be too much for young dcs and we often do indoor activities like museums. We usually bring one swimsuit each. If we go somewhere warm enough to swim daily then it'll be warm enough to dry out. I don't think we've ever swam more than once a day on holiday, it's too much faff with dcs.

Lurkingforalaugh · 07/03/2026 00:20

Each year I return from holiday, wash and dry my holiday clothes and then put them away in the suitcase in the attic until next year…. These clothes have been worn maximum 2/3 times? The only item each holiday I treat us to is new pants 😂

My Mums friend did this for about 20 years, they bought holiday clothes on their honeymoon in the seventies and put the clothes away every year after a fortnight in Spain.
