Do you buy everyone new?

Sunshin80 · 06/03/2026 11:58

Hi all,

Im curious!

When going away more so with children and partners, do you buy yourselves all new outfits?

How many day outfits do you buy like swimwear and cover ups. How many evening outfits?

I know some people like to take previous outfits away but I love the feeling of putting new on when away. Feels like a nice treat. However doesn't feel so great panicking has everyone got enough with the endless lists and calculating it all. I don't put things in catalogue or credit cards though. Just curious as to what others do and spend, ends up a dear do when you include spending money, holiday cost etc 🤦🏼‍♀️

It’s not the ones who aren’t short of cash doing it ill wager

My guess is people are less likely to do this the more holidays they go on.

No cash shortage here. I did say none of this is put on accounts or credit cards. I dont have any or either. I did state that

I would prefer not to go if I couldnt do it. I wouldn't do it for a short break in the UK

You wouldn’t go on holiday if you couldn’t have an entire new wardrobe for it?

Better to save up your money for your secret fund to leave your horrible partner

I love when people say buy on vinted.. no thanks! I don't fancy wearing something that sweaty Sandra's been wearing on her holibobs last year scratching her sweaty arse on for 2 weeks. Then when she decides to send it wraps it in a old bread wrapper

Well based on your OP I thought it was wasteful and pointless, but each to their own.
However this post makes you sound like a pretentious try-hard snob.

I'm out.

You must be very rich, very wasteful and very gorgeous.

Rich because you have money to waste on things you don’t really need and it doesn’t impact your lifestyle. (There is nothing more useful you could be spending that money on.)

Wasteful - because you just don’t care about how wasteful it is.

Gorgeous because everything looks fabulous on you. When I buy clothes, it takes a lot of time and effort to find stuff that really suits me. So when I find something good I cling on to it and wear it as much as possible. If I rushed out and bought a load of clothes for the sake of it, they’d all look disappointing.

I also suspect you may be quite young, with limited life experience. You visualise “holiday you” as a different person with a different (probably better) life, transported into a new realm. It would ruin the dream if you had to drag clothes from your ordinary life into it. Then it would just be “ordinary you”, in a different location. You haven’t yet learnt that we always take ourselves, wherever we go, and that holidays are as much a part of life, with ups and downs, as the rest of life. It’s better to focus on making “ordinary you” somebody you like.

Haha well im 45 so not very young at all. Two children 10 and 7. Not a sheltered life at all, I deal with a lot at home and do not splurge during other months so the one holiday a year I very much like to treat myself. The kids clothes will see them then through the following years warmer months until we next go the year after that. Bare in mind we dont go every year so not extremely wasteful. Anything that can be donated to charity would be. Myself if I see something I like I will get it. I rarely go out with friends, spend money elsewhere so I dont see the issue. 😊

These threads show people's complete lack of imagination.

People who don't swim on holiday telling people who spend a fortnight in the pool that they only need one swimsuit.

People with a large and varied wardrobe, able to pull together 2-week holiday clothes for 35c heat three times a year, telling people who rotate the same few pairs of jeans all 18c summer that they are wasteful for buying new shorts every time they go abroad, once every five years.

People who go self catering, with washing facilities, with no concept of why you might not want to wash clothes in a tiny hotel room every day. Or why you might want to dress up a bit for dinner.

It really does make a world of different, how often you go, what you do when you are there, and what the climate is like at home.

Hahaha far from it. I just like to make a effort and look well presented nothing wrong with that. Everything I no longer want I give away or donate to charity, I thought that was a nice thing to do. Can't do right for wrong.

Yeah and I think that fits with what you were saying about going once every 2 years.

Easterchicken · 06/03/2026 18:39

Most people I know buy a brand new holiday wardrobe for everyone in the family.i thought it was normal

No it isn't. It really isn't normal for adults. Children, yes, because they will have outgrown last year's clothes.

There are people with more money than sense on this thread.

Sunshin80 · 06/03/2026 19:12

Blimey.. caused a right stir. Some of you on here want to get on the thread about peoples monthly splurges they have zero guilt about, you'd have a field day!

There are enough clothes already on the planet to clothe everyone who lives on it for the next 6 years. Giving it to charity is a drop in the ocean.

but your OK to donate your sweaty clothes that you have scratched your bum with to charity for other people to wear 🤷‍♀️

Badbadbunny · 06/03/2026 19:21

Nope, hardly ever buy anything new. Just basically replace anything that doesn't fit anymore, or damaged, or washed-up etc. Other than that, our "holiday wardrobes" are more or less the same every year. Some of the stuff just gets put away until the next holiday, some will get worn in the UK between holidays.

We were only joking about this the other day when we were looking at our old holiday photo albums from the 90s, and 00s and holiday after holiday, year after year, we were wearing the same things for several years. It reminded us of one of my bikinis which appeared in the photos for around 10 years! - It's memorable because the back strap broke by the pool and I ended up flashing everyone, then had to walk back a long way to our room (other end of hotel and up several floors) covering my embarrassment with my hands (I'd not taken a t-shirt or wrap with me!). Perhaps wearing the same bikini for 10 years wasn't a good idea after all!

Wednesdaysotherchild · 06/03/2026 19:23

No way, and I think it’s a really strange and wasteful thing to do.

If people want to risk it buying from a charity shop or vinted im not stopping them. Me personally I wouldn't.

I dont think that at all. Me personally I wouldnt want to buy second hand clothes. Im not judging in anyway someone that does each to their own just like what I do. You seem a little judgemental to be honest. It wasnt a post to be unkind to people who dont buy new everytime they go away. I think you really need to re read my previous replies to people. Like I've said before I dont go away oftern. Everyother year maybe. I dont splurge during the year. I dont go out very oftern and if I do its only somewhere simple nothing fancy as thats not me. My homelife dictates alot of what I can and cant do socially due to one disabled child who takes up alot of my time. So bloody excuse me if every other year I re buy probably 7/8 nice evening dresses and a few nice bikinis for myself and re kit out my children and donate alot of previous years things.

Im not stick up my own arse in anyway shape or form. To be it just feels a nice treat to get a few nice new bits on the holiday weve saved for. I dont do credit cards, I dont do loans for the holiday, spends or clothes. Seems im in the minority and to be honest I kind of like it that way 😊. Not everyones going to agree but wow some people are rude. Im not judging people for buying second hand in anyway good for them. I personally prefer not to. You guys do you.
