Do you buy everyone new?

Hi all,

Im curious!

When going away more so with children and partners, do you buy yourselves all new outfits?

How many day outfits do you buy like swimwear and cover ups. How many evening outfits?

I know some people like to take previous outfits away but I love the feeling of putting new on when away. Feels like a nice treat. However doesn't feel so great panicking has everyone got enough with the endless lists and calculating it all. I don't put things in catalogue or credit cards though. Just curious as to what others do and spend, ends up a dear do when you include spending money, holiday cost etc 🤦🏼‍♀️

Well they seem to make there way to a charity shop if I dont like them any more or I've seen something nicer. Sometimes I find that somethings I wouldn't wear in the UK if it was warm and vice versa some uk summer clothes I dont find suitable for a abroad holiday. If im going away every other year I like to make an effort

What happens if you don't "make an effort". It sounds a bit imposter syndrome/insecure - look at me I do belong in this swanky resort, I can afford it, look i have new clothes.

It's a bit like the threads on her about why some sections of the population are happy for their children and them to be in second hand clothes and a bit "scruffy" and some are not, the latter feeling they'd be judged.

LittleMyLabyrinth · 06/03/2026 18:01

No. This is weird and wasteful.

notacooldad · 06/03/2026 18:05

@Placestogo
in that typeof resort, you know in advance the dress code of each evening so you can plan for it.
What resort is this?
I am genuinely interested as I havent cone across this before.

When my kids were little I just got them jeans, t shirts and shorts from Next and TK Maxx!!! Ive never had to worry about themed dressing on holiday in my life!

Pinepeak2434 · 06/03/2026 18:08

No. Only if I need something new. I have a big box that I store in my loft that I store all the bits I wear around the pool etc.

Can we have an example of one of these hotels? I've stayed in some very nice ones on my time but none with a themed dress code. I can't imagine themes being anything other than tacky.

I've been to an All inclusive in Mexico - a decent one , 5 star and they had a weekly white party where one was supposed to (as the name suggests) all wear white. Not my thing at all (that is a major understatement) so we didn't go, we were probably playing cards in the bar and looking open mouthed at people who had fully obeyed the brief. But, if you are into that type of thing I assume you would look and think oh we need white outfits and sort that whilst in the UK.

babylamb4 · 06/03/2026 18:15

We buy new every holiday, no better feeling than wearing new clothes and shoes on holiday. We go abroad twice a year

No you don’t - one swinsuit gets rinsed out

you might have one smart outfit for a child - something easily rubbed clean if they spill their dinner

7 evening outfits??

Dear me.

And I find a couple of swimsuits is plenty. And one would probably be enough, if it could dry properly overnight, so not in very humid climates like you’re liable to experience in SE Asia.

Some people do find joy in wearing nice clothes. I wouldn’t want to wear one swimming costume for an entire holiday! You wouldn’t wear one dress 7 days in a row or one pair of knickers 7 days in a row so why would anyone wear a swim suit 7 days in a row?

This is a picture from google, but that is what i meant when i say colour-co-ordinated.
kids are wearing the same and the colour palette is repeated in DP and I. It does make for great pictures.

Crikey. I go on holiday to enjoy myself, not to take Instagram pictures.

Commonmum · 06/03/2026 18:22

So unsustainable! I buy few high quality versatile clothes and use them for years. Fast fashion is so bad for the environment and human impact

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 06/03/2026 18:29

PersephonePomegranate · 06/03/2026 17:25

What theme?

Themed evenings hardly screaming luxury, more Hi-De-Hi.

Is it all for cringworthy instagram photos? What's the appeal?

Club Med do themed nights and for some reason all the loaded people who frequent Club Med seem to like them. The do a white Party once a week.

CoolShoeshine · 06/03/2026 18:30

I don't buy a full new wardrobe of holiday clothes when I go away, I like seeing the old stuff come out again- a bit like Christmas decorations.
I do save my trip to the hairdressers to just before I go though.
Lots of people I know get holiday finger and toe nail gels, which must cost a bomb too. They're not people who only go away once in a blue moon either.

Just a couple in rotation (one on, one washed and hanging to dry) have always been fine for my many beach holidays, often in Barbados.

Just out of interest, would you feel embarrassed to be seen in the same one 3 times in a week? Or be worried that people might think you can’t afford a whole selection?

Because I really do have to wonder…

Smudgesmith · 06/03/2026 18:35

I regularly go through my sons clothes and donate or sell on vinted. I'll then buy when I see things, on vinted or in shops in advance of it getting warmer here and not just holidays. He wears most things throughout summer and not just abroad, some more than others. Same for me really. The odd exception might be a beach style dress, swimming costume, bag or sandals for me...or for my son sandals, extra swimwear, a linen shirt or similar and maybe some pool shoes.

Most people I know buy a brand new holiday wardrobe for everyone in the family.i thought it was normal

BaronessBomburst · 06/03/2026 18:39

I've about 18 years worth of photos of me in my favourite summer dress in various locations across Europe.
I ought to make a collage. Grin

I genuinely don’t know anyone who does this, and my children are at independent school so none of the families are short of cash!

ThiagoJones · 06/03/2026 18:42

babylamb4 · 06/03/2026 18:36

Wear them

But just not for your next holiday?

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 06/03/2026 18:43

Me and DH normally get a few new bits for us each holiday, but not for the kids. They get so messy on holiday because we tend to just let them go crazy. For the kids normally bring one or two nice fits and then some scruffs. For us, if we’re going with ILs or my parents (so we get child free time) we will bring more nice clothes, but if it’s just us and the kids we will just get our normal clothes.

I always bring my “fancy” sunglasses though. Doesn’t feel like holiday without them, and I don’t use them day to day so it makes me feel a bit more bling.

notacooldad · 06/03/2026 18:43

Ive only got one swim suit!
Mind you I cant remember the last time I took a swim suit on holiday, probably when the kids were little! (Eldest is 30 thus year)

How do people keep clothes for so long? Do you spend loads so they’re amazing quality or buy loads of clothes so they’re not worn as much.
The two pairs of shorts I bought for an our last beach holiday three years ago look dreadful now as they’ve been worn to death round the garden.
We only do a fly and flop every few years, DH and DC prefer to do several city breaks. Our previous holiday clothes look knackered and DC have grown or completely changed taste in between.

Depends on what it is - a jersey or cotton sundress can definitely stand to be worn a few hundred times. I have a white stuff cotton tshirt dress which is 10 years old and still fine as a beach cover up. So, average quality not super cheap, but not particularly expensive either.

With swimming costumes it will obviously depend how much you wear them, but if it is for two weeks a year only, they’ll last for a couple of years before the Lycra sags. If you swim every week in a chlorine pool, you might need to replace every year. Speedo brand not Shein.

Sunshin80 · 06/03/2026 18:55

I love when people say buy on vinted.. no thanks! I don't fancy wearing something that sweaty Sandra's been wearing on her holibobs last year scratching her sweaty arse on for 2 weeks. Then when she decides to send it wraps it in a old bread wrapper
