Do you buy everyone new?

Hi all,

Im curious!

When going away more so with children and partners, do you buy yourselves all new outfits?

How many day outfits do you buy like swimwear and cover ups. How many evening outfits?

I know some people like to take previous outfits away but I love the feeling of putting new on when away. Feels like a nice treat. However doesn't feel so great panicking has everyone got enough with the endless lists and calculating it all. I don't put things in catalogue or credit cards though. Just curious as to what others do and spend, ends up a dear do when you include spending money, holiday cost etc 🤦🏼‍♀️

This is a picture from google, but that is what i meant when i say colour-co-ordinated.
kids are wearing the same and the colour palette is repeated in DP and I. It does make for great pictures.

I think it looks shit and shows zero personality, choice and style.

Well… say the theme of the evening was white, i would buy three white linen shirts for the boys, a white linen shirt for DP and a white linen dress for me. The boys would wear the same denim shorts (euro-chic!), DP his own whatever he fancied pair of chino. And so on…
in that typeof resort, you know in advance the dress code of each evening so you can plan for it.
It is actually much easier to buy three of the same outfits for the kids. And it makes for great pictures. Obv im not going to wear a linen shirt and denim shorts to match my kids!! That would be ridiculous.

What theme?

Themed evenings hardly screaming luxury, more Hi-De-Hi.

Is it all for cringworthy instagram photos? What's the appeal?

Insipid and safe is how I see that picture. A boring picture.

a great picture says something individual about the experience and the people

guess it takes all sorts

Of course. But its still fast fashion. Its the business model that causes the issue. I know some people think because they're buying their clothing from a slightly more expensive store like next its different to buying from shein. But if you're having to replace it every year its the same thing.

I've got clothes that I bought cheap when I was getting out of debt that have lasted. But they are the exception not the rule.

Neither Next or M&S would consider themselves 'fast fashion.' They're not - all retailers are able to react to trends these days because of technology. Most people would consider those good brands that they can get plenty of wear out of. Plus everyone resells on Vinted these days so all brands are starting to think about the longevity of what they're selling.

People who buy couture are just as likely to only wear it once/a few times and then discard it.

Did your children just willing go along with it?

There was no point in my kids' lives where I could have persuaded them to wear coordinated peach or beige. I'd have had to drug them first.

TheKateColumbo · 06/03/2026 17:30

This thread is classic MN. Fine to jet around the world in multiple holidays but only if you wear your Frankie Says Relax t-shirt and your C&A sundress.

caringcarer · 06/03/2026 17:32

If kids have outgrown they get new if it still fits they wear those. Same with me and DH really. We do each get some new clothes but when it's needed not specifically for holidays.

Placestogo · 06/03/2026 17:33

@ainsleysanob to each their own! We are not hurting anyone by doing this. The kids did not care what they were and most families dressed like us! As i said, every evening had its own dress code, it is not compulsory but it is strongly expected. It is just that particular type of club.

Nowadays, we no longer go to luxury resorts, my older teens will wear whatever they want but i do try to buy them new clothes that they will reuse later. DP and I will buy some clothes and perhaps we are less matchy matchy and it is fine. Although if we know there will be a dress code for the evening, de facto we will be matchy matchy. If i wear a nice dress, he is not going to rock up in his favorite football shorts, he’ll wear something nicetio. If a colour or style is expected say red or sparkles, then yes we will end up being matchy matchy.

if you go to an evening with a dress code, you will probably end up being a bit coordinated with your DH/DP
but maybeyou dont like that kind of evenings were everyone dresses for the dress code and everyone takes pictures. I mean, it is a clever plot from the holiday resort to expect people to stick to the dress code, eveningsjust look fantastic!

Mangelwurzelfortea · 06/03/2026 17:33

I love shopping but I do draw the line at an entirely new wardrobe for every holiday. I do usually buy something new to take though - a new dress or pair of sandals. I seem to kill/lose sandals anyway so end up buying a new pair every year.

user2848502016 · 06/03/2026 17:33

No, how wasteful!
I just buy what we actually need

PersephonePomegranate · 06/03/2026 17:34

And why is it the people participating in these strange practices (nothing stranger than buying 'everyone new' IMO - I've never bought a person in my life!) never know the difference between me, myself and I? 'For myself', 'for DH and I'?

Eridian123 · 06/03/2026 17:35

HostaCentral · 06/03/2026 16:12

WTF. No! Of course not. I wear what I wear here. I do live in the South though, so maybe we need more Summery clothes down here as it is warmer. No idea. Anyway, no. I have had bikinis for years, literally years. And amazingly Southern Europeans wear jeans and shirts, just like we do, even when it is hot.

This is the point.

As a teenager I used to wonder why the shops only sold summer holiday clothes in the summer, until I visited London one weekend wearing my summer weight fleece 🤣, and realised that for some people, these are just normal clothes!

Can we have an example of one of these hotels? I've stayed in some very nice ones on my time but none with a themed dress code. I can't imagine themes being anything other than tacky.

I've never been on a holiday with a dress code! Didn't even know it was a thing! Is this Sandals-y type Caribbean resorts/cruises and the like?

Placestogo · 06/03/2026 17:37

@DappledThings Club med for a start.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 06/03/2026 17:39

I often find that I have to have an emergency shopping trip for pants because nobody seems to ever have enough to pack for a week. Does that count?

Otherwise.... Why? Do you not wear clothes at home?

@DappledThings Club med for a start.

Well you learn something new every day. I just googled and this is indeed what came up - Club Med offers nightly themed dress codes and entertainment to foster a social, high-energy atmosphere, including staples like "All White," "Blue/Pink," "Floral," and "45" nights. These optional, fun dress codes are designed for guest participation, supported by boutique clothing options, and accompanied by live music, cocktail hours, and "Crazy Signs" choreography

Brings me out in hives at the thought of it.

RobinEllacotStrike · 06/03/2026 12:08

Yes I buy new everything for all of us and then when we leave the holiday I throw everything away and just come home with hand luggage.

It makes travelling so simple & easy, especially with children.

My ex husband used to take all his really old stuff on holiday then dump it and only hand luggage on way home. He was a special case though :-)

No more ridiculous than the rest of your post tbf.

ConcretePot · 06/03/2026 17:48

No, wouldn’t occur to me to do this. I just buy things when we need it - maybe replace something/have more than strictly needed if I happen to see something I really like. I’m not particularly frugal overall though - this just isn’t something I would enjoy enough to bother doing.

Bikergran · 06/03/2026 17:52

We don't go away very often for a proper beach-style holiday, so rather than spend a lot, I tend to see what I have in my wardrobe, then ransack charity shops to supplement this. Last year I bought one brand-new dress, a new swimsuit and new undies, the rest was already mine, charity shop finds and a sun dress borrowed from my daughter-in-law. We go away in June, and a friend of mine who travels a lot is about to extremely declutter her wardrobe, so she's offered me first dibs before it goes to the charity shop! 😊

Omg how ridiculous. No wonder the planet is doomed.

Make better choices so that you like the stuff you buy enough to wear it again next holiday.

If you’re that shallow that you need different outfits then get stuff from Vinted, it’ll be new to you and you won’t be spending money you can’t afford.

Good grief. If I wore all my knickers one day after another I reckon I'd probably have enough for a month......although to be fair, they're not all comfy ones.
