Do you buy everyone new?

Hi all,

Im curious!

When going away more so with children and partners, do you buy yourselves all new outfits?

How many day outfits do you buy like swimwear and cover ups. How many evening outfits?

I know some people like to take previous outfits away but I love the feeling of putting new on when away. Feels like a nice treat. However doesn't feel so great panicking has everyone got enough with the endless lists and calculating it all. I don't put things in catalogue or credit cards though. Just curious as to what others do and spend, ends up a dear do when you include spending money, holiday cost etc 🤦🏼‍♀️

Yes I buy new everything for all of us and then when we leave the holiday I throw everything away and just come home with hand luggage.

It makes travelling so simple & easy, especially with children.

On a tour of India a few years ago one couple looked a bit scruffy, even compared to me, but we found out that they saved old clothes during the years, brought them on holiday and discarded them during the trip using the space in their luggage to buy rugs and so on. The guide would tell the hotel this after one member of the cleaning staff had been accused of stealing her clothes when she had taken something from the bin .

We used to go to luxury resorts and yes i would buy co-ordinated outfits for my three children and DP and I so we would “fit in” and also be able to take great pictures.
i wouldnt plan co-ord outfits for every day and every evenings. The co-ord were mainly for evenings and perhaps only half of them. The beach outfits would be well curated and the kids co-ordinated. Like hats and sandals would have been chosen to match one another. Each kid might have had their own curaed outfits for the day but not for every day.
Now i have three teens, and a lot less money…. They tend to wear only black, we no longer go to luxury resorts and i let them dress how they want… i do have nice pictures from before though. And i loved it when people used to stop is and say we were such a beautiful family (for 2 weeks a year!!! 😅). It was fun but I dont miss it (i do miss the luxury hols though!!!)

I hate to break it to you, but a whole family wearing co-ordinated outfits does not look like they "fit in" 😂.

Different if you put the same bright colour tops to all the kids, easier to spot them when you take them outside.

Glow23 · 06/03/2026 16:38

We go away 3 times a year so buy all new for that year’s holidays.

This is the problem, you buy fast fashion that isn't built to last. Buy to wear a few times, dump at the charity shop and most ends up in landfill. For the amount you're spending you could get a few really nice pieces that fit well and aren't sweaty, cheap looking, man made fibres.

For most people, Next and M&S are decent brands. It’s where they shop to be a bit more upmarket/better quality than Primark or Asda. Or Shein. Although TBF I’ve had stuff from Primark and Asda that’s lasted years.

Whatthefork1 · 06/03/2026 16:42

I will usually buy a couple of new items for myself as a treat if I see something I like. My children are young and growing quickly so they need new clothes every season/year, but I don’t buy specific for holiday, it’s just new summer clothes for that year. DH hardly ever buys any new clothes as he mostly is always in his work clothes, so they barely get any use 😅

Shinyhappyapple · 06/03/2026 16:47

goz · 06/03/2026 13:44

Personally I would be never be able to wear 90% of my summer holiday clothes in the UK. Not sure why people are being obtuse about this aspect. The average summer temp where I am is about 18 degrees with cool mornings and evenings, that’s very very different from 30+ weather for a week.

That does make sense. I take my ‘sunny’ holidays in May or September when it’s around 25 degrees, and it’s been a lot warmer than 18 degrees where I live over recent summers, hence I just need the one set.

Why would you think co-ord outfits would make you fit in at a luxury resort though? Any luxury resort I have been in no one has co-ord outfits on because it looks so ‘try hard’.

Well… say the theme of the evening was white, i would buy three white linen shirts for the boys, a white linen shirt for DP and a white linen dress for me. The boys would wear the same denim shorts (euro-chic!), DP his own whatever he fancied pair of chino. And so on…
in that typeof resort, you know in advance the dress code of each evening so you can plan for it.
It is actually much easier to buy three of the same outfits for the kids. And it makes for great pictures. Obv im not going to wear a linen shirt and denim shorts to match my kids!! That would be ridiculous.

ManchesterGirl2 · 06/03/2026 16:54

No. I just pack my existing clothes, unless there's some specific item I need that I don't already own. Don't need the stress of shopping pre-trip!

I do sometimes buy clothes at the holiday destination, particularly if I misjudged the weather forecast and need something different.

HeidiLite · 06/03/2026 16:55

I can't even imagine how it works. So you go for a week, buy 7 new dresses to wear one each evening, and then what, never wear them again and buy 7 new dresses for next year?

Flicitytricity · 06/03/2026 16:58

I go abroad 3 or 4 times a year, rarely, but occasionally buy new stuff, and if I do, it tends to be from 'over there'.
I built a capsule holiday wardrobe for 2 reasons, 1) sick of rushing out to buy more shit I didn't actually need 2) sick of lugging huge amounts of clothing when I wore a third of what I took🤣
Life is do much simpler now.
I can actually get away with hand luggage for a weeks holiday if necessary, but like yo take my snorkelling gear, so usually put a case in.
BUT, I do remember early days of holidays abroad with children, and a huge part of the holiday planning was the lovely new 'holiday clothes' , really ramped up the happy, going on an adventure feeling😁
Im old and jaded now, happy to he minimal, but still remember the excitement of a holiday and the wonderful planning and anticipation - go for it if you want to! New clothes, cases and sunglasses - enjoy😁

Lilybo7 · 06/03/2026 16:59

No , I have my summer holiday clothes including bikinis packed away and the same things come away with me every summer holiday . I even have bikinis that have lasted me for years 😊

PensionMention · 06/03/2026 17:01

Crikey DH still wears some of his t.shirts from when he was an undergraduate, he has retired now :)

I still wear the shorts I bought for our safari honeymoon in 1999.

Harrysmummy246 · 06/03/2026 17:04

Only because DS keeps growing....

MummyWillow1 · 06/03/2026 17:05

No, unless you have gained/lost loads of weight what is the point? Last time we went abroad I didn’t take anything brand new.

Buying stuff for the sake of stuff is so wasteful or resources and money.

This is a picture from google, but that is what i meant when i say colour-co-ordinated.
kids are wearing the same and the colour palette is repeated in DP and I. It does make for great pictures.

Where do you live? Last year there were many days where I am (midlands) that would have been far too for jeans and a top!

There might have been but unless I’m in the garden that’s what I wear.

krustykittens · 06/03/2026 17:08

I live in Scotland and rarely go on holiday, so if we do get to go somewhere hot, I have forgotten about my clothes that are suitable for hot climates and I am always surprised when I unearth these wispy maxi dresses designed for floating around in. Does that count?

Minglingpringle · 06/03/2026 17:16

You must be very rich, very wasteful and very gorgeous.

Rich because you have money to waste on things you don’t really need and it doesn’t impact your lifestyle. (There is nothing more useful you could be spending that money on.)

Wasteful - because you just don’t care about how wasteful it is.

Gorgeous because everything looks fabulous on you. When I buy clothes, it takes a lot of time and effort to find stuff that really suits me. So when I find something good I cling on to it and wear it as much as possible. If I rushed out and bought a load of clothes for the sake of it, they’d all look disappointing.

I also suspect you may be quite young, with limited life experience. You visualise “holiday you” as a different person with a different (probably better) life, transported into a new realm. It would ruin the dream if you had to drag clothes from your ordinary life into it. Then it would just be “ordinary you”, in a different location. You haven’t yet learnt that we always take ourselves, wherever we go, and that holidays are as much a part of life, with ups and downs, as the rest of life. It’s better to focus on making “ordinary you” somebody you like.

Of course. But its still fast fashion. Its the business model that causes the issue. I know some people think because they're buying their clothing from a slightly more expensive store like next its different to buying from shein. But if you're having to replace it every year its the same thing.

I've got clothes that I bought cheap when I was getting out of debt that have lasted. But they are the exception not the rule.

I just don’t understand why you can’t all just be individually yourselves? Nice clothes sure but co-ordinating clothes doesn’t make for a better picture than any other picture! It doesn’t scream ‘having fun on our holiday’, it says ‘we’re having to match for a picture’!

I don't get it either. If I saw that picture I wouldn't realise that's a family that are deliberately co-ordinated or think it looks in any way better than a normal family in whatever they want to wear.

If DH or I happened to pick something that was the same as each other or the DC I'd be more likely to change in case anyone thought we were deliberately co-ordinated.
