Do you buy everyone new?

Hi all,

Im curious!

When going away more so with children and partners, do you buy yourselves all new outfits?

How many day outfits do you buy like swimwear and cover ups. How many evening outfits?

I know some people like to take previous outfits away but I love the feeling of putting new on when away. Feels like a nice treat. However doesn't feel so great panicking has everyone got enough with the endless lists and calculating it all. I don't put things in catalogue or credit cards though. Just curious as to what others do and spend, ends up a dear do when you include spending money, holiday cost etc 🤦🏼‍♀️

How do people keep clothes for so long?
Holiday clothes are just clothes.
So if I go to a hot country I wear summer clothes and if I go to a cold country I'll wear my autumn and winter clothes and boots.
I dont go out and buy specifically for two weeks somewhere, just use what I already have.

Like I said, my summer clothes here are usually jeans and a top. Too hot for a beach holiday.

GreenChameleon · 06/03/2026 16:07

This is the first time I have ever heard of this! It's not something that's ever crossed my mind. What have new clothes got to do with going on holiday? I have more than enough clothes I like wearing and getting new outfits isn't necessary for a holiday imo.

floppybit · 06/03/2026 16:08

No way! I used to know someone who did this and I thought it was mental.

Interesting snobbery and reverse snobbery on this thread!
Multiple holiday each year vs one every other year would make quite a difference

Regardless of how often I go on holiday though I don’t buy 2 full weeks of new summer clothes every 2 years!

Yes I buy new everything for all of us and then when we leave the holiday I throw everything away and just come home with hand luggage.

It makes travelling so simple & easy, especially with children.

I do hope that was tongue in cheek…

Where do you live? Last year there were many days where I am (midlands) that would have been far too for jeans and a top!

HostaCentral · 06/03/2026 16:12

WTF. No! Of course not. I wear what I wear here. I do live in the South though, so maybe we need more Summery clothes down here as it is warmer. No idea. Anyway, no. I have had bikinis for years, literally years. And amazingly Southern Europeans wear jeans and shirts, just like we do, even when it is hot.

CurrentSeries · 06/03/2026 16:14

No!

Replaced as required. Occasionally something new (style, fashion) and stored away holiday to holiday.
I wear a Next swimsuit (occasionally as I prefer a bikini) that I bought in the sale when I was about 20 - nearly 40 years ago! 😱🤣

Wow the planet really is doomed isn’t it

With all the conflict going off in various regions, yes it is doomed.

Shinyhappyapple · 06/03/2026 16:16

I can’t say I have a separate holiday wardrobe. Perhaps my swimwear and shorts get used very little in the UK, but T shirts are worn all year round, linen trousers or summer dresses I wear when it’s nice here. So I do buy new clothes every year, but they aren’t specifically for going away and it’s not a complete change of wardrobe.

When my DC was younger (now adult) then there would be new clothes to replace anything outgrown or stained. DH shops similar to me.

PollyBell · 06/03/2026 12:07

No it would be a waste and terrible for environment

This
Complete lunacy to buy everything new every year!

mrbluebirdonmyshoulder · 06/03/2026 12:02

i buy everything new for everybody. I love the idea of the clothes being brand new for the holiday.

So what do you do with it all when you come back as you can't take it away with you anymore? And I assume you don't wear beachwear to Lidl

Shinyhappyapple · 06/03/2026 16:21

Jk987 · 06/03/2026 12:37

Yes, it’s part of the fun! Some things I re-wear for years but I always like to buy a dress, a few new tops and maybe a pair of sandals.

That sounds fairly normal - and assume you’ll rewear the new things you’ve bought.

What do you do with last year's clothes?

I hardly get any wear out of my summer clothes and might buy one or two new pieces, but not a whole wardrobe. I don't have thar kind of money, wardrobe space or wish to buy fast fashion.

AnotherHormonalWoman · 06/03/2026 16:24

No I don't. It's consumerism bullshit and fast fashion is already a major global problem. Of course if one of the children has outgrown suitable outfits or somebody actually needs something, fair enough.

Yes, but they’re more used to it!

Placestogo · 06/03/2026 16:25

We used to go to luxury resorts and yes i would buy co-ordinated outfits for my three children and DP and I so we would “fit in” and also be able to take great pictures.
i wouldnt plan co-ord outfits for every day and every evenings. The co-ord were mainly for evenings and perhaps only half of them. The beach outfits would be well curated and the kids co-ordinated. Like hats and sandals would have been chosen to match one another. Each kid might have had their own curaed outfits for the day but not for every day.
Now i have three teens, and a lot less money…. They tend to wear only black, we no longer go to luxury resorts and i let them dress how they want… i do have nice pictures from before though. And i loved it when people used to stop is and say we were such a beautiful family (for 2 weeks a year!!! 😅). It was fun but I dont miss it (i do miss the luxury hols though!!!)

JudgeJ · 06/03/2026 16:27

PollyBell · 06/03/2026 12:07

Exactly! My late husband got attached to a couple of t-shirts over a 30 year period, I kid you not! Every trip they came out and no matter how many other shirts he packed these one of them was worn almost every day and then he moaned about having taken too much, When he died it took me a long time to get rid of the second one, it had been around for almost 20 years and was full of holes.
This thread has also reminded my of my late mother, she would maybe make a few new dresses for herself and me but she also always bought us new white cardigans!

Shinyhappyapple · 06/03/2026 16:28

GretaGip · 06/03/2026 12:41

Obsession with consumption, fashion, clout and image is fucking this planet in its arse.

Buying stuff to wear a couple of times because you like the feel of new clothing on holiday is unconscionable.

Giving it to charity shops afterwards does zero for the planet so don't let that make you feel slightly better about your choices.

Can you explain to me this idea of giving to charity shops not helping the planet? People are often advised to buy second hand - Vinted or charity shops, but if nobody bought anything new and gave it away or sold it, how would others be able to buy? If I was looking for something second hand I would want it to be of a current fashion and in good condition.

Doggymummar · 06/03/2026 16:30

I always take my oldest clothes on holiday, suncream sea etc ruins them

SparklyTwinkleGlitter · 06/03/2026 16:30

I treat myself to a new set of knickers from M&S or Dunnes for a holiday. Normally, I wear them to death during the year so they’re likely to be a bit dingy looking.

I’m currently still wearing baggy size 18 pants but really ought to buy some in a smaller size as I’ve lost 3 stone. Hoping they’ll manage until the summer hols. 😂

smithsinarazz · 06/03/2026 16:33

Good lord, no. That would be bonkers. Honestly, you find out just how nuts people are on here.
