Do you buy everyone new?

Hi all,

Im curious!

When going away more so with children and partners, do you buy yourselves all new outfits?

How many day outfits do you buy like swimwear and cover ups. How many evening outfits?

I know some people like to take previous outfits away but I love the feeling of putting new on when away. Feels like a nice treat. However doesn't feel so great panicking has everyone got enough with the endless lists and calculating it all. I don't put things in catalogue or credit cards though. Just curious as to what others do and spend, ends up a dear do when you include spending money, holiday cost etc 🤦🏼‍♀️

No, of course not. I wear swimwear until it wears out. I just take my normal summer clothes on holiday. I usually buy one new dress to take though because I do love a new frock.

I buy decent quality clothes though. Buy cheap pay twice.

notacooldad · 06/03/2026 15:28

I dont see much of a difference between normal clothes and 'holiday' clothes.

I just make a list of what I need and take it out of my wardrobe the night before I go. If im going somewhere hot and it's winter here Ill give my sundresses a freshen up but there's rarely anything I need to buy new.

OldieButBaddie · 06/03/2026 15:32

God no! I go on a couple of hot holidays a year on average, I buy a new bikini if one has died, occasionally a new dress but lots of stuff I have had for years and years as it hardly gets used!

HeadDeskHeadDesk · 06/03/2026 15:36

I'd only buy something if I really needed it. When my children were young I'd end up buying them new summer clothes but mainly because they were growing all the time and needed them anyway, not specifically because we were going on holiday.

I might get a couple of new t-shirts or a sun dress or some sandals, or my husband might get a couple of pairs of shorts, but again, only if we needed them. I don't think I've ever said 'Right, our holiday is in three weeks, we really must get some new outfits to take.'

I find I always used to massively overpack as well. I've learnt not to do that as I've got older.

BlueBlueCowWondering · 06/03/2026 15:36

Interesting snobbery and reverse snobbery on this thread!
Multiple holiday each year vs one every other year would make quite a difference

Squirrelblanket · 06/03/2026 15:40

Not usually. I will mostly just replace anything tatty or worn out, I've often re-worn my favourite bikinis until the elastic goes! I might occasionally buy one or two new dresses for the evening.

This year I need all new though as I've lost 4 stone so none of my old stuff fits. I'm getting most of it from vinted.

PersephonePomegranate · 06/03/2026 15:40

Bizarre. Summer clothes are summer clothes. Some items might be new, some older.

Yes exactly the same here! Some things I've had for years, they are still going strong and they only see the light of day when I take them away on holiday. They never get worn the rest of the summer at home.

If it's a beach and pool holiday then one or two loose cotton sundresses/wraps/kaftan type things that can be slung over a swimming costume if need be, then a handful of t-shirts plus a casual skirt or some shorts, some flip flops and some sandals and I'm pretty much done.

I remember the days when I'd have ten outfit combinations laid out on the bed with several pairs of shoes to go with this or that, a couple of 'dressy' things for the evening etc. Most of it came back unworn. I learned long ago not to bother with all that nonsense.

OneNewLeader · 06/03/2026 15:44

Wow, you spend at least a day on a holiday, shopping for clothes, only to chuck them away. Wow.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 06/03/2026 15:45

Goodness, no - I’d only buy new if necessary. However I have a perfectly good collection of good quality hot weather - and very hot weather - clothes, that are usually plenty.

Phonicshaskilledmeoff · 06/03/2026 15:47

Gosh the kids clothes are rarely new at all, never mind new for a holiday!!!

Vinted all the way!

Newmeagain · 06/03/2026 15:48

I feel exhausted just thinking about trying to buy a whole new wardrobe at once. And would it not cost thousands for the whole family?

hellywelly3 · 06/03/2026 15:49

I buy some bits that are needed due to kids growing etc. and maybe a few extra bits but certainly not all new that’s seems madness. What do you do with the clothes from previous holidays?

PyongyangKipperbang · 06/03/2026 15:49

TheKateColumbo · 06/03/2026 14:57

How do people keep clothes for so long? Do you spend loads so they’re amazing quality or buy loads of clothes so they’re not worn as much.
The two pairs of shorts I bought for an our last beach holiday three years ago look dreadful now as they’ve been worn to death round the garden.
We only do a fly and flop every few years, DH and DC prefer to do several city breaks. Our previous holiday clothes look knackered and DC have grown or completely changed taste in between.

I have a dress that I bought from Monsoon about 10 years ago. It is a simple viscose/cotton mix but the pattern/design on the fabric is gorgeous. Classic style that hasnt dated. Cost £70 which was a lot to me but it has washed beautifully year on year on year. It is still as bright as it was and still looks fab, whereas cheaper things really dont last as well so now I try to buy less in classic styles and better quality where possible.

Newusernameforthiss · 06/03/2026 15:54

No???? This is mental? I've never heard of it? I'll go on holiday in my normal clothes that I like and spend money on lovely meals and treats while I'm there??

42 years old every day I learn about INSANE new shit people do thanks to this hellsite

goz · 06/03/2026 14:57

I hope you get to buy a new swimsuit whenever you like now!

thank you. I do buy nice things or myself now but I lost everything when I suffered a psychotic breakdwon from stress -partly due to living in the conditions I had to. I had my dream career and had got form poverty and trauma to get a phd at an elite university.

ive barely worked for nine years.

I was a fool

Abra1t · 06/03/2026 12:05

WHy waste buying new clothes if you have the previous years' clothes and they're still in good condition and you still like them? I might refresh with things I actually need or have fallen in love with.

Insta, innit? Myself has got to look good in the pictures.

Secretseverywhere · 06/03/2026 16:00

Gosh no. I have four so things like salopettes, ski boots, wetsuits, beach sandals etc are filtered down. I’d obviously go through stuff and get new swim wear as needed. I buy from vinted quite a bit, with the odd supermarket pack of socks and pants.

notacooldad · 06/03/2026 16:01

How do people keep clothes for so long?
Holiday clothes are just clothes.
So if I go to a hot country I wear summer clothes and if I go to a cold country I'll wear my autumn and winter clothes and boots.
I dont go out and buy specifically for two weeks somewhere, just use what I already have.

Mostunexpected · 06/03/2026 16:01

Thesnailonthewhale · 06/03/2026 14:45

just... don't buy the new clothes for holiday then...

So odd.

That’s what I’m saying! It would cost a fortune to buy all of those new each time you went away so I just can’t fathom buying it unless there’s a good reason to (like things not fitting anymore)

itsgettingweird · 06/03/2026 16:01

No I dont buy new every time.
I have a summer wardrobe and a winter wardrobe.

Or rather drawers and then dresses and jumpers are hung up.

T shirts are all in a separate drawer.

I just take summer dresses and shorts etc from my summer clothes drawer. Take some t shirts that’ll match (some sleeveless some with sleeves) a warm cardi/ jumper. Swimwear.

I guess it depends on whether you have enough summer clothes to last a week with no washing - which I do as leave in the coast so have a summer every year and get use of the clothes outside of being on an actual holiday.

Paraguay · 06/03/2026 16:04

No. That would be wasteful.

Paraguay · 06/03/2026 16:04

Do you not wear nice clothes the rest of the year? Why is holiday so different?

Zanatdy · 06/03/2026 16:04

No, couldn’t afford or wouldn’t want to spend a huge amount on all new. Some new, some old.

Shinyhappyapple · 06/03/2026 16:06

Wexone · 06/03/2026 12:48

Oh sweet lord 😲such a waste or money so much damage for the environment as well as teaching your children the wring message that everything is disposable and you don't need to look after anything
Plus leaving your mess to be cleaned up after you leave

I assume she’s joking.
