Do you buy everyone new?

Sunshin80 · 06/03/2026 11:58

Hi all,

Im curious!

When going away more so with children and partners, do you buy yourselves all new outfits?

How many day outfits do you buy like swimwear and cover ups. How many evening outfits?

I know some people like to take previous outfits away but I love the feeling of putting new on when away. Feels like a nice treat. However doesn't feel so great panicking has everyone got enough with the endless lists and calculating it all. I don't put things in catalogue or credit cards though. Just curious as to what others do and spend, ends up a dear do when you include spending money, holiday cost etc 🤦🏼‍♀️

Each to their own, I prefer going on more holidays a year than wasting my time and money shopping 😂

and if I like something enough, why wouldn't I be wearing it at home anyway?
If it's "fashionable" I make the most of it for a few months then put it on Vinted.

kids grow so fast, I buy what they NEED as we go along.

I really hate hyperbole.

No one said anyone has to wear things for 20 years. If you have DC how would that even work? Dont be silly.

The OP was talking about buying a whole new wardrobe for every single holiday. That is completely wasteful. If things you wore on your last holiday still fit then most people just top up - ie replace things that have been outgrown / are not suitable for that location / buy 1 or 2 items maybe for a special occasion (dinner / outing) but not a new wardrobe for the whole family for a 1-2 week break.

Only to dump it all in charity shops afterwards. 🙄🙄.

Edited

Yes. I think some a being really disingenuous. This thread isn’t about people buying replacement clothes for their wardrobe.

If you have method to get sunscreen out of clothes please share! I have two lovely linen shirts ruined by sunscreen.

i have found this works
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dr-Beckmann-Stain-Devils-Spray/dp/B072F34ZJJ
You might need to spray and wash it a few times but it does work
I have even bought 3 or 4 bottles and soaked t shirts in it 😶

Mumandcarer80 · 06/03/2026 15:04

I buy about half new only if we really need it. I have worn the same clothes on a few holidays but I always find I take too much.

allwillbe · 06/03/2026 15:05

No andI honestly don’t know anyone who would do this . It seems like madness

onelumporthree · 06/03/2026 15:06

Buying everything new for your holiday every year, including for adults? That way madness lies. Kids grow and will need new stuff, but grown-ups dont.

If you've got perfectly good swimwear, shorts, t-shirts, dresses, sandals and all that, why on Earth would you want to replace it all?

HugoThatway · 06/03/2026 15:08

With sunscreen, it depends on the fabric. I found it won't come out of white swimwear.

DataColour · 06/03/2026 15:08

I might buy a new dress or a pair of shorts and a couple of t-shirts but mostly I wear clothes from previous summers. I've been the same size forever, and I have well fitting stuff that I look forward to wearing each summer.
It's a complete waste of money and resources to buy a whole new wardrobe for everyone.

How do people keep clothes for so long? Do you spend loads so they’re amazing quality or buy loads of clothes so they’re not worn as much.
The two pairs of shorts I bought for an our last beach holiday three years ago look dreadful now as they’ve been worn to death round the garden.
We only do a fly and flop every few years, DH and DC prefer to do several city breaks. Our previous holiday clothes look knackered and DC have grown or completely changed taste in between.

I buy good quality - no polyester crap. I have shorts from levis, mos mosh and super dry - all natural fibres, most are nearly 10 years old now . They have been worn every holiday plus when we do get rare days of sun and heat here. One pair of denim ones were fraying a bit and i paid 10e for seamstress to fix it so they will last me another while

Hey you could try this. Bit of a long process but for linen perhaps it’s worth the effort:

Disclaimer: my family and I only use sunscreens that don’t come up white on our skin so maybe that’s why I find it easier.

I will keep looking for you though - I am invested in saving your linen now!

I may treat myself to one or two new things, but I think my swimming costume is at least 10 years old now, probably more!

I'm 47 now and don't give a crap whether I'm fashionable or not (not that I really ever have to be honest). If I like it and it looks nice on (to me), I'll wear it whether it's new, old or fashionable.

HeidiLite · 06/03/2026 15:11

I did last year. thanks, Mounjaro!

Thanks. One of my DC is really allergic to sunscreen, unfortunately the type he can use seems to leave horrendous yellow stains that often you can’t even see until the stain is old.
I’ll give it a whirl 😊

See some people are more like the OP than they’d like to admit, in that they have special “holiday only” clothes and then general summer clothes. I do know a woman who wears shorts every day on holiday abroad, doesn’t matter how hot it is in the UK, won’t wear them here. She’s had the same shorts for years.

Away from the beach and other than not feeling the need to add a cardie or jacket, I don’t tend to dress significantly differently on holidays abroad than in the uk summer. I’m trying to assess from the comments if those who have “special holiday wardrobe” would think I’m too casual on holiday or too “holiday” for wandering round our town on a sunny day.

Zebracat · 06/03/2026 15:13

I’m going to Copenhagen soon. It will be cold and wet, as it is here. But my dogwalking wet weather gear would be so out of place in an urban environment, so I have bought a new coat and boots. I think it would be lovely to buy all new clothes for a holiday. I never have, but I will make sure that my clothes are practical and presentable and buy what is necessary. I bought a red swimsuit for my last beach holiday because it’s a noticeable colour for sea swims.
It makes even more sense for children, as they do outgrow clothes and shorts that have been worn eg to make dens in the park may look really tatty in an all inclusive resort on the Med. I do agree this may be a class issue. My Mum grew up the youngest of 8 and dirt poor in Derry. She told me they would have a day trip to the seaside once a year, and her Mum would overhaul their clothes for that trip, and they usually had something new. But her entire wardrobe would have been 2 dresses and a cardigan. So this was not an extravagance but putting your best foot forwards, after a yearly stock take.

I try to buy better quality. I have some max mara trousers that are over 10 years old which still look new. I wash everything on the lowest temp possible and hang out to dry.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 06/03/2026 15:18

Although @TheKateColumbo- do you need a “holiday wardrobe” or do you just need something new summer clothes?! If you wear your shorts at home anyway, and that’s why they don’t look good 3 years on, then would you save them for the holiday, or if we have the usual heat wave just as the kids sit down to do exams, would you not crack out the new shorts or would they have to wait until after holiday to be added into summer rotation?

(I’m not a “saving things for best” kind!)

Mine are both cotton but have faded, look saggy on the arse and one pair has a torn pocket from brambles I wear them loads round the garden in summer though. By the sound of it you wear yours less.
Dresses I find harder to find in natural fabric, the ones I do get tend to get stains or look dated before the next holiday comes around. The same with t-shirts, although I stick to cotton or linen I find they usually look tatty after a couple of seasons.

notacooldad · 06/03/2026 15:21

No, u have more than enough clothes for every occasion.

Ive heard of colleagues doing this and i genuinely thought they were bonkers to be honest.

JaneyDC · 06/03/2026 15:23

This is ridiculous.

Yes, I love buying new clothes but I wouldn't buy a whole new wardrobe for a holiday! I think a few items like a new summer dress, sandals and a bikini etc would be a treat without going over board. Tbf the kids would need new clothes as they would have outgrown theirs.

Doteycat · 06/03/2026 15:24

Do i buy a whole new wardrobe? No.
Do i buy a few nice bits if i like them? Yes.
If i spot a dress that i think id like on hols then i buy it.
Or sandals. Or swimwear.
I have loads though and these days we go away 5 or 6 times a year so picking up a new dress or something means i usually have a nice amount to pick from.
I dont buy cheapy though. Ive never bought Shein. I buy natural fabrics only now that i can afford it.
Like my other clothes, if i need something, i get it.

5128gap · 06/03/2026 15:24

We tended to go early summer, so the DC had all new then wore for the rest of the season. Myself, I tend to have some things I only wear on holiday so they're as good as new anyway and I just buy the odd thing I fancy or to replace something if needed.

DiscoBeat · 06/03/2026 15:25

I don't buy clothes I don't need, no.

I’m always loathe to buy summer clothes for the UK as I feel I don’t get the wear. I only wear shorts in the garden. I wear dresses sometimes but not daily. I usually stick to wearing loose trousers or even jeans and t-shirts in the UK as I feel daft in a dress just going round the shops although I merrily do that on holiday!
I’d rather wait and buy new for holiday that I can wear at home than buy new for longing round at home that then look a bit scruffy on holiday.

Allergies make it tricky but we use the oil formulations of these SPF50s

https://www.garnier.co.uk/our-brands/sun-protection-and-self-tan/ambre-solaire/products/very-high-50-plus

We use the oil versions of the SPF50s and they don't stain. We (I) dont like the ashy greasy white look on my dark skinned kids 🤣.

I also carry a small ziploc of vanish to soak things overnight before the stains set in.

We have no holiday plans this year so hope yours is good and stain free!
