What has fish to do with carnivores? I come for a culture where many foods are naturally vegan, we call them the food they are, not a make belief thing. Some people hate fish and would love an alternative street food of the chippy, why should they order vegan fish if the plant it is sounds more palatable?

I can't help but be reminded of a stroppy toddler.

That's a funny coincidence - this thread made me think of stroppy toddlers, too!

Several of these are near the beach but I've never tried them. I have had vegan fish in Brighton a couple of times, one was surprisingly fishy and the other was (I think) courgette flowers which I wouldn't recommend

@ChimneyPot and is your city a buffalo? No, of course it's not. It's a city.

Just to clarify Buffalo wings are called Buffalo wings because they, like me, are from the city of Buffalo in New York.

But they are not wings from buffelo. Thats the point that is being made.

but is it not odd that people who don't want to eat animals want to call what they eat animal?

I think it's a lot weirder that meat eaters mash most of their meat up into weird shapes like hotdogs and nuggets. Almost like they don't want to know what they're eating.

The thing is the fake versions of meat are almost always fake versions of meat that's already been unmeatified. Sausages, hotdogs, burgers. Etc Things we wean children on to because they don't tend to want bloody great big bits of steak. So it becomes a comfort food and then vegans eat vegan versions of it

Why not call it blossom and chips, chickpea fritter and fries or seaside blossom? Why hang on to traditional names of dishes that you have left behind for ethical reasons? Why not own your food choice and name it what it is and perhaps start new traditions so that people in decades to come flock to the seaside, not for F&C but for seaside blossoms? Nut roast is now completely normal and appealing for what it actually is, no need to call roast beef.

Because who the fuck is going to know what seaside blossom is? Why not just call it vegan fish and chips? The word vegan is there so people know that it’s vegan so no one is going to order it thinking that it actually fish and chips but they will expect that it’ll be battered and most likely deep fried and served with peas as fish and chips are and that it’s about as close as you can get if you used to love fish and chips but are now vegan. It tells you more about it than seaside blossom.

I never understand why terms like "vegan fish" are used. I'd rather know what I'm eating, whether it's tofu, jackfruit or whatever.

Because it's fun, and because when you've been vegan decades it can be nice to eat something that a bit resembles a childhood fave.

@introfun just dumb. I like to eat it because I am vegan and I enjoy fish and chips?

OP haven't read full thread cos there's too many ignorant shitebags, but if no-one else has said it, I love Gino's Fryer in Largs if you're ever that way. The fish is tofu and seaweed, great flavour, lovely batter.

there is a great vegan menu at Capplemans in Scarborough, but they are about 10 mins from the seafront, Gabbys chippy in Bridlington has a vegan menu as well, which is excellent. The nut and nettle is in Bridlington as well, and they are fully vegan with excellent cakes to take away.

Pombear123 · 12/08/2025 18:00

Every vegetarian alternative to “fish” and chips I’ve tried is gross- I’ve tried battered halloumi (appreciate that’s not vegan!) and battered banana blossom - both were just greasy and horrible. Give me chips and mushy peas any day!

TheAdeptBrickQuoter · 12/08/2025 18:01

DeLaRuiz · 12/08/2025 17:10

What is fake fish made from then? Is it a UPF?

I think I'll bookmark this thread for the next time the vegan bashing starts about how vegans are out there forcing their beliefs on people.

Sure as fuck looks the other way around from this angle.

Oh gosh, I wouldn't want to ruin my clean eating healthy fish and chip meal with UPF. 🙄

LivingOnTheVeg · 12/08/2025 18:01

Fuck me there are some sad people here tonight.

I’ve been to No Catch a few times and they’re always great, and the owner’s lovely. Quite pricey though and the portions aren’t huge. There’s also a chippy in Newquay, Cornwall called The Harbour with a separate vegan menu. Don’t think they do fish but they do battered sausage.

Join one of the vegan groups on Facebook if you haven’t already as you’ll get much kinder comments than the people here who’ve thrown their toys out the pram because of what you want to put in your mouth!

13SixWeetabix · 12/08/2025 18:02

Hey op. I was the first response on your thread, and realise now it will get lumped into the real vegan bashing, which I didn't intend. I'm sorry, it was a genuine question - slightly tongue in cheek in a good natured way I'll admit - but genuine curiosity as to what is sold as 'vegan fish'. I kind of bristle at the way things are marketed sometimes, "vegan" chicken/fish, when actually naturally veggie/vegan food in itself should be a perfectly acceptable choice. I get that the psychology and marketing strategies around this are complicated though. Also, I expected this to be a quiet thread, lol 🤦‍♀️As a not-vegan some of the alternatives to battered fish actually sound worth trying, I'd order battered jackfruit if I came across it as I often am drawn to veggie/vegan options and like to try different things as well as reduce my meat consumption.

I hope that whatever else you find, you enjoy your chips on the beach, seagull/rain/bother free 😄☀️

ohwhatcanyoudo · 12/08/2025 18:03

not sure if anyone else mentioned as haven’t read the full thread, but ‘No Catch’ on Brighton sea front has rave reviews from my vegan friends, alongside ‘Little Jack Fuller’s’ which is also by the beach up a small road!

TheAdeptBrickQuoter · 12/08/2025 18:03

@13SixWeetabix well done Weetabix that was a really nice post, and really unexpected on MN these days.

At least you will be safe from the seagulls

Ah… sadly not. They go for chips.

OonaStubbs · 12/08/2025 18:04

Vegan fish should be banned. Fish should only be real fish that comes from the sea or river. Vegan fish is an oxymoron.

Daboomboom · 12/08/2025 18:06

There was a veggie (or maybe vegan) restaurant by me. They wanted to appeal to meat eaters as well as veggies so all their meals were things like vegan "steak and chips" or faux "beef lasagna" etc

They said that it was easier to "sell" things that people knew. In the UK, things like jackfruit are still very uncommon and lots of people arent very adventurous. So battered jackfruit wouldnt do so well. Battered vegan fish would.

I think they misjudged it though as they alienated their target market (the veggies) but making everything overtly meat based. But meat eaters were a bit confused.

Sadly it didnt last very long.

Yuja · 12/08/2025 18:07

Some of these replies! Didn’t realise how offended people can get. OP - no catch in brighton is great, was there a few days ago

Trovindia · 12/08/2025 18:08

introfun · 12/08/2025 17:40

Sure but it's still not F&C, it's vegan substance and chips. Why not name it what it is? It's too strange.

I hope you don't refer to hotdogs, and instead call them reconstructed corpse bits and arseholes.
Meat eaters mostly wouldn't eat what they do if it were called what it actually is.

SilenceInside · 12/08/2025 18:08

What a lot of fuss and aggro about a very reasonable request. @FABAdvice sorry your thread has been set upon by all the people who are so inexplicably angry at vegans. When you just wanted advice about a fun day out on the beach.

I’ve had the banana blossom version of vegan fish and chips, and I quite liked it. It had some texture and tasted a bit like artichoke hearts, I thought. A perfectly nice dish to eat and gave a lot of the elements you’d get in traditional fish and chips.

Don't you believe it, they love the vegan sausage rolls 😁

They are motivated as much by hunger as spite.
