Ah yes, a thread of entirely normal reactions to a reasonable question

There’s at least two in Brighton. My kids have been and rave about it.

In Brighton where a fish isn't a fish. And other things aren't quite what they try to signify either. Got it.

Ceci n'est pas un pipe comes to mind.

I quite like a bit of tofu and would try a good battered tofu dish. I wouldn't call it vegan fish and chips, as that would be a lie. I guess in our insta world, it's all about the representation and not really the real thing🐠🍟

ButterfliesSkies · 12/08/2025 17:29

No Catch is within walking distance of the beach and very enjoyable!

Last time I was in Margate there was a place near the beach doing vegan fish and chips (banana blossom) but I haven’t tried it personally.

Have a Sex on the Beach cocktail instead, and watch where the sand goes! Eating on the beach is awful, being on the beach is awful. Sand in everything including the car for weeks, and usually someone's arse near your face on the busy strands. Ugh.

But enjoy anyway, if you find no fish fish, and non beef dripping chips somewhere.

No sand in Brighton! It's a stony beach. Nice but stony.

If the poster had said she had a fish allergy but would really love the idea of sitting on a beach with fish and chips, I expect there would have been a lot more polite posts suggesting vegan alternatives. Im not vegan myself but do a lot of vegan catering and enjoy loads of vegan food too.

Why? Being vegan is a perfectly valid choice, not deserving of ridicule and people are just being arseholes because they can. It’s 2025. The concept of veganism is not that new yet we still have idiots pretending that it’s as unfamiliar to them as manners also apparently are.

ilovepixie · 12/08/2025 17:32

Vegan fish like vegan bacon and vegan chicken. The world has gone mad! If you want fish call it fish. None of this poncy vegan bollocks!

Anyone would think they were being forced to eat it. If it tastes good then that’s what matters.

I agree but fish can never be vegan

At least you will be safe from the seagulls

I think they'll eat anything. Don't think they're fussed about whether it's real fish or not!

tealandteal · 12/08/2025 17:33

I stayed at a hotel in Cornwall that offered battered banana blossom and a coupon other vegan things (I am not a vegan but colleagues had these). The hotel is right on the beach.

No sand in Brighton! It's a stony beach. Nice but stony.

Like Nice on the Riviera? I got the marks on me arse still from the shingle. 😊

Yep, they'll go for your chips, or a sandwich, anything.

They're just ignorant fucks.

Elliots in Hunstanton.
I usually try the happy cow app, but it's not comprehensive.
Sometimes you just have to trawl through a lot of places!

Look for one that serves banana blossom vegan fish - the texture and taste are great, according to my vegan in-law.

I’d disagree on that! (As a vegetarian who otherwise isn’t normally at all fussy!)

Bigger stones, so not as bad as Nice.

DiscoBob · 12/08/2025 17:35

I know they use seaweed to make it taste fishy, but I'm not sure what the actual 'fish' is made of? I can't think of anything that would have the same texture?
A pea fritter, a scallop maybe with chips? I'm sorry I'm not much help. I'd probably just get chips!

There’s no such thing though?

Of course there is

Banana blossom! That’s amazing! I was just about to ask “ what does it taste like?”…. But.. does it taste like fish? Or is it like tofu or jackfruit?

Banana blossom doesn't really taste of anything! I flavour it with seaweed.I don't make it very often as I avoid fried food-but as a treat meal It's great, flakes just like fish does.

Arlanymor · 12/08/2025 17:36

Copperfish on Mumbles Pier do tofu and chips: https://www.mumbles-pier.co.uk/food-and-drink/copperfish-restaurant-and-takeaway

I can't personally recommend as I eat fish and chips - but they have great reviews.

And we have lovely sandy beaches in this neck of the woods.

Chesil Chippie in Portland (just off Weymouth) does a great banana blossom and other vegan options. The battered samphire is delicious. Right opposite part of chesil beach. It is shingle though. Weymouth beach is sandy but you'd have to drive back.

Dartmoorcheffy · 12/08/2025 17:37

Banana blossom and jackfruit are both so versatile. Shred and mix with bbq sauce to make vegan pulled pork. It tastes great.

Is sitting on mini boulders on the beach some kind of penance for sins or what! I suppose that's what deck chairs were invented for though.

(Just having a bit of a laugh, as I'm sure you have figured out).

fish can never be vegan

That’s why they have a vegan alternative because fish isn’t vegan 🤦‍♀️
