Fisherman’s Pier Fish and Chip van, on the beach at Tobermory (on Mull). They do halloumi for the vegetarians (very good) and quorn nuggets for the vegans.

I didn't see any tofu although it can be very nice done well (tofu wrapped in seaweed and battered).

It's also absolutely beautiful on Mull...

Vegan fish should be banned. Fish should only be real fish that comes from the sea or river. Vegan fish is an oxymoron.

What difference does it make to you?

NoBinturongsHereMate · 12/08/2025 18:11

Another vote for No Catch in Brighton. All vegan, very tasty tofu & nori 'fish' fillets, as well as various other scampi-type things etc.

The London Fryer in Paignton does several vegan options, but the banana blossom 'fish' is only eat in, not take away, and it's a bit too big - they could do with stripping off a few of the tougher outer petals. You can have vegan battered sausages to take away.

Harbour Lights in Falmouth does vegan fish and vegan fishcakes (jackfruit). Very close to the harbour, but no beach.

Dirty Duck in Holywood has vegan options, but not a fish one. And it's a bit of walk to the front.

Maggie May's chip shop in Belfast has multiple vegan options, but is nowhere near the sea.

The fish could have been a vegan.

ChompandaGrazia · 12/08/2025 18:13

There was Hank’s on Felixstowe seafront that was entirely plant based, but I think that might have closed.

I’ve had battered artichoke before which is nice.

Oh, and as for comments like ‘rank’, sorry but I find that eating the corpse of an animal is for more rank than eating banana blossom.

FABAdvice · 12/08/2025 18:13

Yeah, let's call everything what it is. Let me start:

Frey Bentos Pies - Horse Pies
Fish Fingers - Breaded Fish Scrap Sticks
Milkshake - Sugar & Cow Mucus Slurry.

"No Catch" in Brighton
We went a couple of years ago (sat inside not the beach as it was October )

Delicious - I was never a fish lover (except tinned salmon) when I did eat meat.
The chips are delicious too and I had a tartare sauce (vegan) with mine.
The fish had a "skin" on it (seaweed I think)

I am thinking about another Brighton trip when it's a bit quieter.

Banned? No one is forcing you to eat it. Actually the definition of fish is rather vague and debatable so perhaps you should concern yourself with that, considering how many species of “fish” have been used for “fish and chips”.

Brighton is your place. The No Catch

Clevedon Pier (The Glass Box) is apparently lovely, we’re not vegan but friends are and highly recommend it. Clevedon seafront is lovely, I grew up a minute or two away and it’s picturesque with a Poets Walk, great bars and restaurants etc etc. Have fun! 🎣

But they are not wings from buffelo. Thats the point that is being made.

You do appreciate there is no such thing as "wings from a buffalo" in real life but there is such a thing as fish? Hot dogs have obviously never been actual hot dogs, thankfully but were called due to their resemblance to dachshunds.

I relate to many of the ethical objections vegans have but why would you call it pull pork, a culinary name for pig meat that only can exist after brutally slaughtering pigs? Why would people wish to reference this brutality in regards to their chosen food, when you have made an ethical choice not to support the exploitation of animals?

Fish&chips is more than just the actual food, it's a tradition. But the tradition is seriously outdated, what with the terrible state our oceans are in and the environmental impact of industrial scale fishing. It's this sentimental referencing of old fashioned and ethically questionable dishes that's so odd.

I'm sure there must be vegans who would agree?

wizzywig · 12/08/2025 18:15

Im not vegan, but does everyone feel the same about 0% alcohol?

ChompandaGrazia · 12/08/2025 18:15

And, you always get the tedious ‘how do you know if someone’s vegan’ ‘joke’. Well it’s always meat eaters than pop up on threads like this taking people being vegan as some kind of personal affront.

@FABAdvice, ask HQ to move this to the vegan section to avoid all the people who can’t cope with the idea that other people eat different food to them.

There is no such thing as a fish anyway.

Lizziespring · 12/08/2025 18:16

There's a vegan chippy in Brighton. Well, of course there is. I had pleasant battered fake fish, some nice chips and some hideous vegan tartare sauce there. It's almost on the beach so you can get a takeaway and be a victim of the seagulls in seconds.

Americano75 · 12/08/2025 18:17

Half this thread reminds me of when Piers Morgan absolutely shat himself in a rage when Greggs brought out the vegan sausage roll. Absolutely mystifying.

And pulled a face eating a vegan Percy Pig even though they’d been vegan for years but never mentioned it.

They're not called that because of that animal though, they're called that because of the sauce, from the area they're from

LozzaCh0ps · 12/08/2025 18:21

Wow, this thread is quite the arsehole magnet 😅😅😅

OP, I hope you find something delicious! Please report back!

I have to say banana blossom was too realistically fishy for me, but I’ve not eaten fish for 38 years and I wasn’t a fan when I did 😅

Really want a mushy pea fritter now.

ChompandaGrazia · 12/08/2025 18:22

Oooh Hank’s in Felixstowe has closed but Vegan Vice has opened in its place.

Rosequartz7 · 12/08/2025 18:23

In Penarth, South Wales, Beachcliff do some and the vegan stuff is cooked in a separate fryer 🙌
It's next to the beach and you could stroll on the pier too.

Imagine if buffalo did have wings. They'd be huge! I wonder if they'd fed the average mumsnet for longer than a whole chicken and a huge salad?

BlueEyedBogWitch · 12/08/2025 17:51

You need to find somewhere in East Yorkshire that does a Hull pattie and chips.

It’s potato and potato, but it works.

In Hull it will probably be fried in beef dripping so not vegan. Delicious though.

Ilovepastafortea · 12/08/2025 18:26

I'm wondering why? What is the point of vegan fish & chips?

DH & me had a small chain of fish & chip shops.

I think that I perhaps we may have offered tofu and chips, but (at this, our busiest time) with 3 fryers on the go & queues going out of the door, I wouldn't have shut off, cleaned out a fryer, put new oil in & heat it up (which would have taken at least 3 hours) just for one portion of tofu. The chips would have been vegan however as only potatoes cooked in veg oil. The mushy peas & pickled onions were also vegan by default.

Here they deepfry bean burgers in batter, all made on site, no upf’s, chips are fried in sunflower oil

Sunflower oil is a UPF.
