Would you travel to the USA?

Setting aside disagreement with Trump’s politics, would you travel to the USA this week (specifically NYC and Washington DC)? My concern lies with the risk of terrorism.

@ItallcomesdowntothisHardly anyone with an esta is being denied unless there’s extra info they don’t like. The basic uk tourist who hasn’t been to their blscklisted countries will be fine.

Plus why not chat to concerned people there? Why abandon them? What wimps we are.

They’re really not. In the same way that I doubt many people cancel their visit to the UK while Labour are in government.

They are:

Please do some reading and research,
it’s not being a ‘wimp’ to not want to travel to a date that’s doing awful things.
This has absolutely nothing to do with ESTA,

No you’re right not everyone is denied but having close family who live there and travelling often with family and friends on the border I know a number who have been denied and not just because of a little extra info the US doesn’t like. Cracking down means a lot more scrutiny and they can deny anyone they like. We haven’t abandoned anyone.

I do think that there’s been a big impact on travel from Canada to the US, which is a vast chunk of the tourism market.

Yes - we don’t go over now for lunch, shopping or a weekend away. Previously popular places are now struggling financially.

I would go but I’d download my social media and delete WhatsApp from my phone - can upload again later. Enjoy your trip and let us know how it goes as I’m due to go soon.

TizerorFizz · 24/06/2025 22:30

@Itallcomesdowntothis But Brits are not coming in from any border! We just arrive on a plane, queue up and get in. We had the quickest entry ever. Just confirmed our itinerary and off we went. If you were we went, you would have no idea who the president was. Nothing political was obvious at all. Just tv news which we avoided.

@TizerorFizz my friend’s sister who is white British with an American surname, has never done anything even vaguely controversial in her life, and her American DH will not travel to the USA at the moment because he’s concerned she’ll get deported.

Parker231 · 25/06/2025 09:17

Everyone - come and visit us in Canada instead. Amazing country - gorgeous places to visit, no Trump (most of us hate him!), great weather, food and culture.

TizerorFizz · 25/06/2025 09:19

@MinnieMountainIm white British and never done anything controversial. I’ve just visited the USA. Why on earth would she get deported? What passport does she have?

MinnieMountain · 25/06/2025 09:41

Her DH, who works for the US military in Britain, is concerned @TizerorFizz . She has a normal GB passport. My point is that one can not be sure these days.

TizerorFizz · 25/06/2025 12:56

@MinnieMountain I think you can be sure. He’s not in immigration. Ordinary white British passport holders with an esta have no issues. You know as well as I do who might. You are taking scaremongering as truth. It’s obviously not true. The fact the USA is deporting people is true. The fact they won’t want you if you have been to Iran is true. Glad we didn’t go to Iran now. We were booked to go a few years ago but BA pulled their flights so we pulled out too. The FO has no warnings about USA apart from demos. Don’t go near one. I really don’t think anyone should not go if they want to. If they don’t, fair enough. We also go to Canada but clearly it’s not the same as the USA! Great in its own right.

BoredZelda · 25/06/2025 13:16

Nope. My daughter, as a disabled person, has banned us from going there whilst Trump is in power. She feels like she would be a potential target.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 25/06/2025 13:16

No chance. I could not stand the thought that even 1c of my money could end up in Monster Cheeto J Taco's pocket!

He is barely a republican, he is just a nazi fascist and going to a country where people went "yeah he's the guy we want running our country" just makes me not want to spend any time around such imbeciles!

Once Taco is dead, I'll reconsider for sure.

I also refuse to travel to anywhere like Dubai, again, as I disagree with their govt.

Canada isn’t the same as the US - it’s significantly better in every way 🇨🇦

MinnieMountain · 25/06/2025 14:16

I don’t know as well as you do who might @TizerorFizz . That’s the problem- it’s unpredictable now.

CarpetKnees · 25/06/2025 16:21

Sounds very much like you think the way people are being treated is okay, as long as it doesn't affect you personally ???

IdiottoGoa · 26/06/2025 06:52

That’s not OK, why would anyone who doesn’t have to go there support that regime? I won’t be.

(sorry, I lost the quote, repeatedly, thanks to the ‘excellent’ swipe feature)

Amy73838 · 23/06/2025 18:48

People on here clearly have a poor grasp of statistics and probabilities.

You are way more likely to die in plane crash on the way there than by a terrorist attack once you arrive.

You clearly have a poor grasp of probability because this is not true. Flying is extremely safe. Car travel not so much.

28Fluctuations · 26/06/2025 07:15

Terrorism risk- obviously heightened, but your individual risk is very low. Potential deadly risk.

Air traffic control problems in US: same, higher risk than before, results may be deadly, but still low risk you will be affected.

Phone searches, stopped at immigration, etc. I don't think anyone is giving out stats, but per media coverage much more likely. Deportation probably the worst outcome. Possible temporary detention. Likely just invasive and unpleasant.

Supporting Trump: whatever your views, your tourist dollars support him. Even if you're out marching against him, your money supports the current regime. No risk for you to any of that, other than maybe your ethics and 'endorsement' of wider geo-politics of Trump (by adding to positive tourist stats).

28Fluctuations · 26/06/2025 07:17

Forgot to add possible ICE arrest/detention. Depends on destination and frankly your etnic profile for risk.

TizerorFizz · 26/06/2025 08:20

@CarpetKnees Do you always make things up? What is actually useful is talking to Americans about their concerns and their huge worries about Trump and what he’s doing. When you go on a holiday, do you always look at the full political situation? I bet you don’t if you travel long haul. There would be a very long list of countries you wouldn’t go to. It’s illuminating to talk to people on the ground and that doesn’t mean I agree with or condone Trump. I just am willing to go to the USA and see what people say, if they wish to talk to me. Quite a few did. You will never hear them if you don’t go.
