Would you travel to the USA?

Setting aside disagreement with Trump’s politics, would you travel to the USA this week (specifically NYC and Washington DC)? My concern lies with the risk of terrorism.

Why do you characterise this rational post as ‘crazy’ and Democrat supporting. OP is talking about the present situation and the fact that Trump is in charge. I am fairly certain that the vast majority of the world’s population think that Trump is a dangerous, irrational toddler. That’s reason enough to be reluctant to travel to the US while the US is involved in bombing. It’s got nothing whatsoever at all to do with being a Democrat supporter. This is a U.K. site. Hardly anyone on here is a supporter of any US party because they don’t vote there.

Tbh, I expect a lot of countries, while appearing to be clutching their pearls at this wave of bombing by America, are secretly pleased that someone’s doing something about it, so that the rest of us don’t need to involve ourselves. No-one wants the irrational evil Iranian regime to have access to Nucleur weapons, so someone needs to do something, or we’re all screwed…

But why? Because you disagree with his policies? I would guess spending a holiday in America, doing the sight seeing stuff, isn’t going to be any different whether a Democrat presidency or a Republican one….

I can’t speak for @ramonaquimby but for me it goes way beyond his politics. The man is dangerous, driven by ego, he has shown over and over again that he has no regard for the safety of his citizens or the world.

I don’t want to collude with that.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 23/06/2025 20:20

I’ve recently traveled to the US and without exception people were happy to see us British tourists. The number of international visitors there is certainly down on previous years. Prices are steep for goods and services.

I did not bring up the subject of Politics deliberately but upon realising that we were from the U.K. many uber drivers - ordinary citizens just like you and me did say they do not like their President and think he is doing more harm than good to the US economy.

We’re flying on Thursday for a combination of work and holiday for 2 weeks. We’ll lose £3,5k if we cancel, (but we’ll stomach it, if we decide not to go.)

Millions of Americans live and work in cities across the US, including DC and NYC, and will be doing so for the foreseeable.

Security is always high in DC, and NYC has already suffered through a few terrorist attacks and has learned a lot.

I wouldn't worry about your trip.

Mumstheword1983 · 23/06/2025 20:10

We are going as a family in 2 weeks. Can't say I'm not worried. Once in a lifetime holiday (for us anyway I realise it's not everyone's dream holiday). Spent over 10k so yes we will be going if travel is safe at the time. Feel your anxiety. I am the same.

I hope you'll have a lovely time.

It's a friendly and interesting place.

OK, I have to respond to those who say they won’t travel to the USA because of Trump. I spend a lot of time over there for work. There are many wonderful people who are horrified at what’s happening in their country. Look at all the people who are standing up to ICE and speaking their minds, despite measures to restrict freedom of speech and criminalise peaceful protest. America has a tremendous history of people who stood up for human rights. I think that a visit to the USA is supporting those people more than Trump.

I agree with that approach.

I live here and have friends who go to all the protests, including prayer vigils outside a deportation depot, and they volunteer legal services for immigrants' hearings. They are truly the salt of the earth.

greencrab · 23/06/2025 20:50

I wouldn't be worried with increased terrorism but wouldn't travel because of the reports of people being detained, phones checked, cavity searched etc. Statistically unlikely but I tend to be the one that unlikely bad things happen to and I would absolutely hate that

Pretty much. He's a pretty horribly man and it's not a difficult decision to avoid the county right now.
I'd also never visit Dubai

MrsTerryPratchett · 23/06/2025 20:55

This is nothing new. A quick google says that there have only been 17 years out of 250-odd that America hasn’t been in some kind of conflict or other.

They are addicted to war. Can’t help themselves.

Yup. Agree with that for sure. Thanks IdiottoGoa 👍

BarBellBarbie · 23/06/2025 21:01

No, but not because of terrorism, because I don't like the current climate under Trump.

Plantladylover · 23/06/2025 21:02

Putting thougths on the US presidency aside, Iran's missile range won't go further than Rhodes. Of course there could be Iranian sleeper cells in the US which could cause individual attacks but quite sure there are some in the UK too. Iran hates the UK as well as the US, the general Western world in fact.

I think you would be crazy to cancel your plans and lose all that money.

ArtemisiaTheArtist · 23/06/2025 21:05

Even if I had the best travel insurance with a decent medical expenses provision, I think not. All the usual issues that people say, but slso because Americans are very loud. I don't like loud people.

This is the main reason I wouldn’t go to the US at the moment. I have reposted and liked anti-Trump posts under my full name on social media and would still feel nervous even after deleting the apps.

I’d be more worried about these things in the UK than in the US.

Dabralor · 23/06/2025 21:33

Id be more worried about ICE, border security at the airport taking my phone and civil unrest. Threats from Iran and its proxies would be low on my radar.

Amy73838 · 23/06/2025 19:12

Do you research likely election outcomes before booking any holiday?

What a bizarre question.

Why would I do that?
the US isn't about to have an election. It is stuck with the ignorant egomaniac it currently has for the 4 year term.
I do consider the political climate in places I might be thinking of holidaying, before booking anything though, yes.
I suspect most people would rather go to countries where there is a stable political situation than war torn countries or countries that very much limit individual freedoms.

Theyreeatingthedogs · 23/06/2025 23:34

Amy73838 · 23/06/2025 19:06

They’re really not. In the same way that I doubt many people cancel their visit to the UK while Labour are in government.

They are. We were going on a road trip from Nashville to New Orleans but decided against it when the orange monster was voted in. Many other people are not going to the US with him in charge.

Really, every single American is loud? Well, you learn something every day. Wink

(in other words, what a load of rubbish!!!)

Travel is about broadening your horizons not limiting them. I feel a bit sorry for you if you only visit countries whose governing regime matches your own personal preferences.

Do you also avoid the UK as we currently have objectively the worst government in living memory over here?

TizerorFizz · 24/06/2025 00:39

I’ve just come back from the USA. Every single person who spoke to us about their country was ashamed and dismayed about their president and USA politics and some were angry. I actually think there’s every reason to visit. They do want to know what we think. It’s interesting to hear what they and their friends think. Solidarity with normal people costs nothing. I’d go and do it.

When you say ‘objectively’ how have you objectively measured that?

Because unless you were born about a year ago or have amnesia, I subjectively disagree.

I also think you seem to be willfully misrepresenting what people are saying

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 24/06/2025 06:41

People don’t have to justify to a small number of posters on here why they are choosing to exercise their free will in one way or another. I’ve been to the USA many times but I won’t go whilst Trump and his bizarre group of enabling yes men and women hold office. You may think I’m missing out and that’s fine. It doesn’t alter my view. I know that many lovely people in the USA feel the same way about him that I do and they have my sympathy. That said he won the popular vote this time (unlike 2016) so many many Americans clearly like him. I’ll spend my cash elsewhere.

Also @Amy73838I think you may want to look at the definition of ‘objectively’ …
