Would you travel to the USA?

Setting aside disagreement with Trump’s politics, would you travel to the USA this week (specifically NYC and Washington DC)? My concern lies with the risk of terrorism.

If I had a booking then I wouldn’t change it and would go.

Would personally not book a trip to the US whilst Trump I’d in charge though. If

Laralee · 23/06/2025 19:14

Yes I would. I don’t think there’s any great danger in doing so. It’s not like we’ve been advised against travelling there is it? The risk of terrorism is no higher than it is anywhere else. If you were asking should you go to Israel or Ukraine or Iran then no.

Holluschickie · 23/06/2025 19:07

I wouldnt because I am not white. Not cos of terrorism.
I don't really enjoy the US anyway.

Makes sense why you wouldn't visit. Same with the UK, if I wasn't white I'd avoid them both.

fizzynotflat · 23/06/2025 19:20

No, about as appealing as North Korea/ Russia at the moment.

Doesn't matter to me if a US President is Democrat or Republican.

Does* matter to me if the President is a sane, intelligent person who understands he is restricted by the constitution, or the buffoon that is currently in the White House.

This is exactly what I was going to reply. And American friends have said to me that they also have no plans, unless a family emergency, to travel there whilst Trump is in office.

Anzena · 23/06/2025 19:21

Yes, I'd go if I'd already paid for it and wouldn't get a refund, no question.

However I wouldn't plan on any visit until the Trump Presidency is over.

Doseofreality · 23/06/2025 19:22

I’d be concerned about Trump closing American air space and getting stuck over there.

Ineedcoffeenow · 23/06/2025 19:09

OK, I have to respond to those who say they won’t travel to the USA because of Trump. I spend a lot of time over there for work. There are many wonderful people who are horrified at what’s happening in their country. Look at all the people who are standing up to ICE and speaking their minds, despite measures to restrict freedom of speech and criminalise peaceful protest. America has a tremendous history of people who stood up for human rights. I think that a visit to the USA is supporting those people more than Trump.

That is true but I am committed not to travel to the US whilst Trump is president. What happens after that depends on when I would travel there.

In your situation, I wouldn’t cancel due to worries about terrorism though, I just wouldn’t have booked in the first place.
Others have the right to do as they please, that’s my personal boundary.

Would you only travel to the US when there’s a Democrat president?

That’s elite level craziness!

We live just over the border in Canada - we’ve made a decision, along with many friends, to no longer go over the border into the US whilst Trump is President.

tarheelbaby · 23/06/2025 19:26

Y'know how people here on Planet MN can't bear how horrible it is and yet ... in the best way, life keeps going? Just like the UK (insert outrage here) keeps going, so does life the US. If anything, the social divisions in the US are stronger so if you were ok before, you're probably ok now and can see a way to work out the solutions.

As per @Amy73838 and @Ineedcoffeenow, the world keeps turning and many of the Americans, like the good people of MN, are horrified but keep being their decent, sensible, hardworking selves and that makes daily life continue to be daily life.
Likewise to @SidekickSylvia, my DD18 is going in a few weeks to visit her US rellies.

SunshineDeLaSoul · 23/06/2025 19:26

Nope

Soonenough · 23/06/2025 19:27

I'd probably be detained . Immigration are allegedly monitoring phones and your social media. If you've ever posted or downloaded any anti Trump , anti Israel material , you can be interrogates or refused entrance .

Oh yes I have posted anti Trump anti Israel material, so ya. Not scrubbing my social media either.

Jennyathemall · 23/06/2025 19:30

Yes.

Longhotsummers · 23/06/2025 19:30

Qatar and the Middle East, definitely no. USA, yes, although I’d travel on a British airline.

Why do you characterise this rational post as ‘crazy’ and Democrat supporting. OP is talking about the present situation and the fact that Trump is in charge. I am fairly certain that the vast majority of the world’s population think that Trump is a dangerous, irrational toddler. That’s reason enough to be reluctant to travel to the US while the US is involved in bombing. It’s got nothing whatsoever at all to do with being a Democrat supporter. This is a U.K. site. Hardly anyone on here is a supporter of any US party because they don’t vote there.

Tetchypants · 23/06/2025 19:34

Amy73838 · 23/06/2025 19:06

They’re really not. In the same way that I doubt many people cancel their visit to the UK while Labour are in government.

International flights to the USA have been cut by (mainly European) airlines as there are already 7-10% fewer visitors. It’s expected that will drop even further as tourists decide to book elsewhere for next year.

They are expected to lose over $10 billion dollars of tourist revenue this year. I’d say that’s fairly significant in the grand scheme of holidays.

MinnieMountain · 23/06/2025 19:35

A friend’s BIL is in the US forces in Britain. He and her DSis are not going to the US whilst Trump is president as he’s concerned that when they’re split up at immigration she might be deported.

IdiottoGoa · 23/06/2025 19:49

Absolutely not. The reasons to avoid USA while Trump is in in charge are just piling up. I have friends in the US who are scared to leave the country in case they can’t go back. Have stopped using Facebook / messenger and are watching what they say online.

I’ve been a few times and generally like it but not at the moment.

Pretty sure that’s not what she (or he) said. It’s a strange leap of logic to even make that assumption

thank you. That’s not what I said. I said ‘this presidency’. And as has been repeatedly confirmed, I am very much not alone in this. Obviously there are intelligent, diplomatic, politically astute and thoughtful upholders of democracy who are not Democrats….but this president is not one of them.

Livelovebehappy · 23/06/2025 20:09

ramonaquimby · 23/06/2025 19:00

Why? Lots of people giving the USA a swerve whilst Trump is in charge

But why? Because you disagree with his policies? I would guess spending a holiday in America, doing the sight seeing stuff, isn’t going to be any different whether a Democrat presidency or a Republican one….

Mumstheword1983 · 23/06/2025 20:10

We are going as a family in 2 weeks. Can't say I'm not worried. Once in a lifetime holiday (for us anyway I realise it's not everyone's dream holiday). Spent over 10k so yes we will be going if travel is safe at the time. Feel your anxiety. I am the same.
