Barbados vs Cornwall

We want to go away for a week in June. Have added up the costs of various holiday destinations.

Found some really cheap flights to Barbados that work (£300!). Travel for us to get to Cornwall would be about £300 each too.

A nice cottage in Cornwall is about £1200 for a week, and we have found something similar in Barbados for £1300.

So what would you do? June is not ideal for Barbados but then equally it could pish down all week in Cornwall.

It would be a 9 hour flight to Barbados for me, plus a couple of hours in the airport and an hour + driving there, parking etc versus a 6 hour drive to Cornwall (which would be a lot cheaper than your travel costs).
I’d weigh up how much that would actually eat into the holiday time and how knackered it would make me for going back to work. Also look into the food costs. The difference in prices between your (not so) local Tesco in Cornwall compared to prices in stores in Barbados, and also the eating out costs for both.
What do you want from your holiday? Things to do in Cornwall v Barbados if the weather isn’t great. There’s not a hell of a lot to do in the majority of Cornwall tbh.

I live in Cornwall!! I would be on that plane!!

mewkins · 26/04/2025 10:01

I'd go to Cornwall 😆. The flight time to Barbados would put me off for a week's holiday. It could be very wet in both places of course!

worrisomeasset · 26/04/2025 10:04

It took us nine hours to get to Cornwall last summer, a journey that takes about 5 hours in the off-season. DH worked out that we could have reached Barbados, door to door, in about the same time and vowed never to go to Cornwall again. The return journey also took 9 hours and the weather was crap all week.

HorrorFan81 · 26/04/2025 10:05

God Barbados any day. I love Cornwall but definitely Barbados

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 26/04/2025 10:07

Why would it cost £300 each to go to Cornwall? Is driving not an option (assuming you’re in mainland UK already)?

LlynTegid · 26/04/2025 10:07

Cornwall. Lots of things to do and less carbon emissions. June is usually decent weather.

Bathroomscales · 26/04/2025 10:08

If the weather in Barbados isn't guaranteed then I'd probably risk Cornwall

LadyKenya · 26/04/2025 10:08

Cornwall, only because the flight time would be too much for me, only to stay for a week.

BatchCookBabe · 26/04/2025 10:08

LOL is this a trick question? 😆

Who would choose Cornwall over Barbados? 😂

PrincessofLiechtenstein · 26/04/2025 10:09

Food shopping in Barbados is expensive as it’s all imported, however I’d definitely still go to Barbados! If you are National Trust members you can go to all the Bajan national trust places for free. Easy and safe to get around on public transport if you need to. And you can just chill on the beach all day. Take snorkels of you have them and watch out for turtles.

CalypsoCuthbertson · 26/04/2025 10:10

National Trust in Barbados! Sorry but that made me chuckle 😂

Bjorkdidit · 26/04/2025 10:12

Are the flights really only £300? Even if that's per person, it's a lot less than id expect.

Is it hurricane season or something?

But yes, if Barbados is affordable, go there

Poisonwood · 26/04/2025 10:13

Barbados!!!

Odd reaction. Barbados is not known as Little England, for nothing. Maybe you did not know that.

Nutmuncher · 26/04/2025 10:17

Cornwall absolutely. June so the weather is likely to be good too.

A £300 9 hour flight would not be appealing to me for a week regardless of the destination, where would you be sat, in the hold?

90swithcigarettesandalcohol · 26/04/2025 10:18

Well for a week I’d probably just go to Portugal in June instead 😆

What do you want out of the holiday @targales ?

KnickerlessParsons · 26/04/2025 10:19

I didn’t think Barbados was all that.
I’d go to Cornwall.

KnickerlessParsons · 26/04/2025 10:20

And are you sure you can both fly to Barbados for £300? £150 each? 🧐

Oh I love this about MN

Should I go to Barbados or Cornwall

well I’d go to Portugal

😂😂😂😂

NeedToKnow101 · 26/04/2025 10:25

£300 flight to Barbados must take about 3 days!

TinkerbellStarbright · 26/04/2025 10:26

I’d rather sit in the rain in Barbados than Cornwall 🤷‍♀️

Bjorkdidit · 26/04/2025 10:27

CalypsoCuthbertson · 26/04/2025 10:10

National Trust in Barbados! Sorry but that made me chuckle 😂

Why?

It's a great idea and would give them ideas about interesting things to do if they go to Barbados.

Bythewayimgoingouttonight · 26/04/2025 10:27

Barbados is definitely worth the 9 hour flight for one week and those flights are a bargain. You can hire a car very reasonably and explore the whole island. Breathtaking scenery at Bathsheba and on the northern tip at the Animal Flower Cave and then completely different vibes south and west.

Self catering will be expensive - jaw dropping prices in the supermarkets but you can eat out reasonably as long as you don’t go for the high end restaurants.

I’d recommend staying on the west side if you can as the beaches there are most suitable for families. It’s a wonderful place. Go go go!

Barbados. I say having just returned from there!
