Barbados vs Cornwall

targales · 26/04/2025 09:27

We want to go away for a week in June. Have added up the costs of various holiday destinations.

Found some really cheap flights to Barbados that work (£300!). Travel for us to get to Cornwall would be about £300 each too.

A nice cottage in Cornwall is about £1200 for a week, and we have found something similar in Barbados for £1300.

So what would you do? June is not ideal for Barbados but then equally it could pish down all week in Cornwall.

£300 flight to Barbados must take about 3 days!

Exactly, 8 flights to arrive on the third day of the holiday. Barbados for the weekend then another 8 flights home.

kdramaqueen · 26/04/2025 10:33

Please share where those flights are available in June @targales
Barbados, even with rain. Eat local foods and as the BSD is linked to USD, your £ will go far.

Oh I love this about MN

Should I go to Barbados or Cornwall

well I’d go to Portugal

😂😂😂😂

Well it depends what is putting the OP off booking either Barbados or Cornwall? If it’s the long flight for a week that’s off putting but she wants better weather go somewhere else closer but warmer if she’s worried Cornwall will be miserable weather.

it’s not like they are the only two holiday destinations available for a week..

DH travels internationally for work a lot so we tend to have longer hols or summer breaks in the UK. Additionally,I don't really like very hot weather.

Regarding travel to Cornwall - 3 of us with railcards total cost about £400.

Both places a long journey for a week. There's a strong chance of rain in both places. The choice is really where you will feel less bothered if the weather plays up. Both places will be geared up for rainy days. We've had Cornish hols where we hardly went to the beach in 10 days and it didn't put us off.

TheDrunkenClam · 26/04/2025 10:41

Both are great!
June will be fine weather wise in Barbados as it’s just at the beginning of hurricane season (I was there for Beryl last year 😳) but it will be hot!
Supermarket shopping shouldn’t be too bad if you stick to local brands but eating out can be as cheap as you like!
Cornwall is amazing and even more so if you get the weather!
Overall I’d say a week isn’t enough for Barbados though so I’d pick Cornwall 😊

StIgantius · 26/04/2025 10:42

It’s the rainy season in Barbados. I’d go to Cornwall.

gottakeeponmoving · 26/04/2025 10:45

There isn’t much difference in travelling time from mine to Cornwall vs Barbados so Barbados wins for me.
There is a chance of rain at both but one of them is going to be a lot warmer 😎

MyKingdomForACat · 26/04/2025 10:48

Been to Barbados a few times. Yes the flight is a bum-numbing 8 hours but the island is utterly magical. You’ll be so welcome and looked after. The nicest people

ForestFox44 · 26/04/2025 11:02

Barbados of course!

NCTDN · 26/04/2025 11:06

If flights are that price then a no brainer for me. We went to Cornwall for a week in August. It rained every day and we spent an absolute fortune on things to do inside.
If it’s rainy season though, I’d be looking for a European holiday instead.

90swithcigarettesandalcohol · 26/04/2025 10:18

Well for a week I’d probably just go to Portugal in June instead 😆

What do you want out of the holiday @targales ?

That’s what I was thinking .

FannyDryer · 26/04/2025 11:10

BatchCookBabe · 26/04/2025 10:08

LOL is this a trick question? 😆

Who would choose Cornwall over Barbados? 😂

I know!! And the national trust in Barbados too 😂😂

you'll be in Barbados for crying out loud, unsure as to why this is a question!

sanityisamyth · 26/04/2025 11:27

I’d kill to go to Barbados!

SummerDaysOnTheWay · 26/04/2025 11:33

Um Barbados obvs. Provided it’s not hurricane season op.

Barbadosgirl · 26/04/2025 11:38

Go to my island! June should not be too bad weather wise.

SilvieBear · 26/04/2025 11:45

I’ve been to Barbados for a week. It was absolutely fine! I’d 💯 do it again, over Cornwall!

CrushingOnRubies · 26/04/2025 11:46

workingcocker · 26/04/2025 09:57

I live in Cornwall!! I would be on that plane!!

Same 😂

wish I could fly from Newquay or Exeter to exotic destinations 😀

Spidey66 · 26/04/2025 11:47

I've not been to Barbados but have been to St Lucia a few years back. I didn't enjoy it, though I think it was more the resort than St Lucia tbf. We want AI. The resort was quite isolate and that together with it being AI meant we rarely left the resort. There were 4 restaurants there and we had to decide at breakfast where we wanted to eat that evening, so no spontaneity. The restaurants were all pretty samey tbh. They had the same house band most evenings which got boring.

We had unseasonable storms. The resort was not designed for this, the drainage was shit, meaning we had to go to the restaurants with water up to our ankles. 3 of the 4 restaurants were open on one side meaning the rain came in. The activities were all designed with outdoor activities in mind eg water sports, horse riding etc so it was boring when it rained.

There was about 10 of us (we were there for a wedding) and 2 had their money stolen from their room. Apparently this wasn't the first time and the housekeeping team were suspected but not enough evidence.

The bride and groom were due to get a helicopter ride from the resort to the airport on their way back but this was cancelled at the last moment, after the transfers had left. The resort arranged a complementary taxi for them but it was touch and go whether they would make the flight on time.

We did go to a local street party which happened weekly and also took an organised excursion round the island and enjoyed them.

OK a lot of the faults were the resorts fault rather than the fault of St Lucia. Obviously they couldn't help the weather but the resort should have had a back up plan and be better designed for rain.

The following year we went to St Ives and loved that holiday! We were sc so could eat when and where we wanted, had better weather but if there had been rain there were galleries and museums to visit.

dizzydizzydizzy · 26/04/2025 15:01

Easy question! Barbados!

90swithcigarettesandalcohol · 28/04/2025 13:54

What did you decide @targales?

NCTDN · 04/05/2025 15:36

@targalesyou need to tell us what you decided!

PrawnAgain · 04/05/2025 15:38

I'm actually flabbergasted that anyone is saying Cornwall!!

Runningoutofpatiencefucksandmoney · 04/05/2025 16:00

KnickerlessParsons · 26/04/2025 10:19

I didn’t think Barbados was all that.
I’d go to Cornwall.

Agreed. I'd go to Cornwall

MidnightPatrol · 04/05/2025 16:01

This is very later for an April fool

kirinm · 04/05/2025 19:58

Barbados. The journey isn’t bad and while you may have some rain - it isn’t like the rain you have here. I went to St. Lucia in the height of hurricane season and all we got was a heavy shower at lunchtime.
