How much do you think this couple spent this year?

  • 2 weeks long haul holiday at Easter
  • 1 week European sun holiday in May
  • 2 week European holiday this summer
  • 1 week U.K. break this summer
  • 1 U.K. city break long weekend

For 2 adults. Travelling comfortably in a nice standard of accommodation, not budget but not lavish either. So eating out at nice enough places but not champagne & oysters for every meal!

How much do you think this has all cost in total?!

@CurlyhairedAssassin - no. For me, no it would cost more and I wouldn’t be going budget, and like 4/5 star. But op said not super budget but nothing luxury. Based on that it’s possible. Ie you can go long haul to Thailand for 2 weeks in April for £800. A uk weekend could easily be done for £200 at a basic bed and breakfast. Europe in May could be Ryanair flights for £40, plus regular hotel in non fancy location is pretty cheap off peak.
So the uk weekend trip could have been pretty cheap and then the long haul more.

i mean you can still get uk hotels for £40 a night like premier inn in non city locations, or you can spend £1000 a night to stay at chewton glen in a treehouse.

For us (family 3), it would be more like £20-25k. Premium hotels, nicer flight schedules, larger suites for 3. But it would be possible for £6-8k if your travelling off peak mainly, booked deals, and researched well.

Really starting to wonder why I responded. Are you ever coming back OP?

TraceyDeacy · 16/08/2024 18:54

Yes - what is the answer?

Otherstories2002 · 16/08/2024 18:54

How long is a piece of string? Literally no way of knowing.

hby9628 · 16/08/2024 18:56

If out of school hols I'd say about £10K?

NAndJIsLockingDown · 16/08/2024 17:05

This looks pretty similar what we did pre-covid, except we stayed in 5*s and travelled first class.

Our total spend was usually around £50k, so I'd price your itinerary at around £20k.

Laughing. Hilarious.

QuitMoaning · 16/08/2024 18:58

£11,300

menarenotgods · 16/08/2024 19:12

£12k.

Sethera · 16/08/2024 19:14

Why are you asking us? Just look on your bank statement and add up the cost of your various expenses.

Where are you getting 800 for 2 weeks in April for flights and accomm for 2 people? As OP mentioned Easter I'm assuming this means school holidays. Quick look on Skyscanner for next Easter school hols throws up return flights for 2 to Thailand for £2,200. Then there's accommodation and expenses on top.

Ok, I'll give you the 800 if it's not in school holidays and there's no hotels or other expenses on top. But we're talking holidays here, not just flights to somewhere.

I hate these threads because they remind me of how much difference there is between term time and non term time travel prices. I'm stuck with school holidays because I work in a school (non-teaching, earn less than a teacher). My kids are at uni so unlikely to come on main holidays with us again, and I'm seriously thinking of looking for another job because it's so galling paying so much more when I could be going when the prices are more normal. Fllights to Thailand for £2,200 vs £800?!

alijchappell · 16/08/2024 19:18

I’d say about £15k.

Emz1212 · 16/08/2024 19:19

It’s an impossible question. It’s like asking how much do you think a four bedroom house is. Will it depends on if it’s in Bradford or Belgravia.

anxioussister · 16/08/2024 19:20

This is wildly subjective.

what constitutes ‘nice accommodation’? My thrifty sister considers air BnB nice because it’s not a youth hostel. I don’t like staying anywhere that doesn’t fluff my pillows for me.

there is a vast difference between two weeks in May in Bulgaria and two weeks in St Tropez.

ditto ‘long haul’ to a package in Tunisia vs a couple of weeks at a smart resort in the Maldives.

If I was to do these things - at hotels that look nice to me, in places that I’m excited about within the geographic regions you vaguely allude to - it would cost 50kish (which is why I go on far far fewer holidays)

Sis could probably do the whole lot with change for 10k.

we would have wildly different experiences - we would be equally happy

PurpleReindeer2 · 16/08/2024 19:20

Depends really on where they went and where they stayed. I'd guess about £16k. Could be more and could be less.

Oh I cocked up ha ha, didn't click though on sky scanner so the 800 was just for one person, so it would would be about 1600 for flights for 2 out of term time. Still much cheaper than term time though.

invisiblecat · 16/08/2024 19:26

Really starting to wonder why I responded.

Likewise.

Threeboysadogacatandakitten · 16/08/2024 19:28

Penguinsa · 16/08/2024 19:29

Clingfilm · 16/08/2024 19:29

£11k if I'd booked it.

YummeryFlummery · 16/08/2024 19:30

£30k

MassiveOvaryaction · 16/08/2024 19:32

50p.

This is going to turn out to be some pyramid selling holiday scheme shite isn't it? Hmm

Emz1212 · 16/08/2024 19:35

The thing is with holidays you tend to get what you pay for.

An all inclusive can be chicken nuggets and chips, plastic sunbeds, and Gary and Linda having a cocktail made out of paint stripper.

It can also be fillet steak and lobster tail, Bollinger, and staff coming around your sunbeds to clean your sunglasses.

hence why it’s impossible to answer

DreamW3aver · 16/08/2024 19:41

I've consulted my piece of string and the answer was what a stupid question with not enough details

I assume the couple is you so don't you already know the answer?

sussexman · 16/08/2024 19:44

less than they thought so they wanted to brag about it anonymously?
