Sitges, Spain

Has anyone been? I'm here this week. I chose it randomly for holiday, as the cheapest flight to spain for me was to barcelona. Then I got a bus down to sitges.

I'm so impressed. Cheap hotels. The hotela arw half the price of the hotels in barcelona. I paid a lot for a hotel in barcelona on my first night here.

It wasn't that nice. no balcony no pool. And it was really expenaive.

I've cow come down to sitges. which is about 40 mins by bus from barcelona. My hotel is half the price if the barcelona one, and ten times nicer. my room has a balcony , it is right beside the beach, has a rooftop bar, a heated spa pool, and rhe best breakfast I've ever had.

I just really wanted to reccomend sitges in spain if anyone is looking for a cheap but great holiday!

I love Sitges and it definitely is a gay town.

Okay - listen chill out! stiges being a gay Mecca does not reflect in you! You can still like it, the beaches are still beautiful,
it’s still a lovely place.

I just thought that it was completely irrelevant. It has nothing to do with anything. And it took away from what I wanted to s on here.

I've never heard people say that places are "gay towns". I think it's a silly thing to say

I have lots of straight and gay friends.

No town is gay. No town is straight. Straight and gay people go everywhere.

What if you went on to a forum and wanted to talk about your lovely holiday in Spain. And straightaway four people came on and said "oh that town is a gay mecca". Like it has nothing to do with anybodys holiday!

I thought it was predominantly a gay resort. Doesn’t mean it’s not nice just not somewhere I’d go as I’m not gay.Love Barcelona though and found it very cheap last summer.

There is no such thing as a gay town!

That's ridiculous! How can you have a gay town. Its kind of a silly thing to say. There are hundreds of straight people here in sitges. There are loads of families. There are also gay people

It's a complete mixed bag

Edited

Yeah I like barcelona too.

But it was a very long way from where I was staying in barca to the beach.

It's nice I can just walk out the door here in sitges and the beach is 2 mins walk

Are you quite sure you’ve got the right town, OP?

Sitges is very well known for being one of the gay capitals of Europe. Even I know this, and I’m boringly straight.

Circe32 · 05/03/2024 19:41

Hi, please can you tell me if you stayed in the Platjador Hotel? We are losing the plot trying to find a hotel with good amenities, near a sandy beach and some nice restaurants / bars and places of interest. First beach holiday abroad for the two of us!

43ontherocksporfavor · 05/03/2024 19:41

Have a lovely time OP.

SecondHandFurniture · 05/03/2024 19:42

Sitges is lovely, but I used to live in Barcelona, and honestly the low and mid priced hotels there aren't meant to be balcony/pool/sunbathing hotels (and have these things as a mark of quality) any more than those in Madrid or Paris. It's busy year-round for city breaks; just happens to be coastal.

Champagnebar · 05/03/2024 19:42

i spent a few days in Sitges with DH about 10 years ago - loved it

We keep meaning to pay a return visit but haven’t yet managed to fit it on

rookiemere · 05/03/2024 19:44

What's the name of your hotel OP?

I'm always on the lookout for a heated pool - there are surprisingly few of them.

rookiemere · 05/03/2024 19:45

Oh and anyone looking for good cheap accommodation in Barcelona, we stayed at the Citadines apart hotel on Las Ramblas and thought it was very good - no pool or balcony though.

TooraLoora · 05/03/2024 19:51

i'm straight and had a fab. holiday in Sitges with my then fiance. Lovely place

43ontherocksporfavor · 05/03/2024 19:53

We stayed on Las Ramblas in a hotel called Sehrs Rivoli. It had a great roof bar.

MangosteenSoda · 05/03/2024 19:55

There’s a sort of crossroads of pedestrian streets/bars in the the centre of town that’s literally the gayest per capita place I’ve ever set foot on. Gayer than my local (very famous) gay village. That’s neither here nor there for most visitors who aren’t seeking out that scene (you, presumably), but pretty important for those who are looking for that scene and therefore I wouldn’t play down other people’s comments on this thread just because you haven’t noticed it.

There’s a lovely little art museum in the old town right on the castellated bit. Also plenty of vermut drinking, beach watching, anchovy scoffing time and vibes. Wishing you a lovely trip!

Is vilanova nice. I might pop down for a day @NotmyfirstRodeomyfriend

Nowhere near as nice as Sitges, good range of shops but we went May and it was still quiet. Nice beach, not many restaurants. I'd go further to Cambrils or Taragona, personally.

pinkstinks · 05/03/2024 20:57

Unfortunately when booking a holiday a lot of us need to find somewhere that is safe. This is important.
Where holding hands and just being together won’t bring fear or shame. Sitges is special because it meets that need. Just because you don’t need that doesn’t mean it’s not important or that it can be denied.

It's well known for it but ... whatever. It doesn't make any difference to you or to me but it's known as a safe, welcoming place for gay couples. It doesn't mean it's not safe and welcoming for straight couples, singles or families.

I didn't say it wasn't important. Did I.

I said I disagree with the statement that Sitges is a gay town.

It is obviously not.

There are hundreds of straight people here In Sitges. I just went to a bar and there were four straight couples sitting there with me.

A more accurate statement to make about Sitges would be:

Sitges is welcoming to all people

OP you're starting to sound a bit too invested in 'proving' Sitges isn't an obviously gay holiday destination. Not sure what's going on but you're coming across as odd.

OP you're starting to sound a bit too invested in 'proving' Sitges isn't an obviously gay holiday destination. Not sure what's going on but you're coming across as odd.

But it isn't a gay holiday destination. Thats a an incorrect thing to say. And i have to say, its annoyed me. Because its wrong. And because there's so much more to sitges than that.

I don't want people to be wrongly informed.

After I got here , I was researching "things to do in sitges" online.

And I saw a man on a forum asking about whether sitges is a good place for a holiday with his friends.

Someone replied to him "no it isn't. It's a totally gay resort. You'll only have gay bars. It's not good for straight men". And he said "oh thanks for telling me that, I won't go then.

like its not correct.

Sitges is not a gay resort at all. It has a gay area, it also has a lot of things for straight peopletand families to do. It has beautiful beaches and walks and restaurants.

I think the people saying that anywhere is a "gay town" are odd to be honest.

Nowhere is one sexuality. Like come on. How could that be possible. Its an immature thing to say.

Would we say that somewhere is a straight town ?

43ontherocksporfavor · 05/03/2024 21:28

It’s not that it’s a gay town, of course not. It’s a known gay resort for holidaymakers that want a lot that caters for that scene.

rooftopbird · 05/03/2024 21:28

It's lovely, I have friends who live there, been a few times but not in the last 10 years, big gay community which I thought enhanced its social vibrancy.

rooftopbird · 05/03/2024 21:30

Sorry, hadn't rtwt, not everyone is gay! Not that it makes the blindest bit of difference it's just what it's known for.
